These are the Things we Have Lost

In her debut poetry collection, These Are the Things We Have Lost, Janice Warman chronicles a journey from her South African childhood to the landscapes of motherhood with unflinching honesty. From pregnancy 'high on hormones and Pellegrino', to themes of love, loss and longing, these poems capture intimate moments of tenderness and rupture. With a journalist’s precision and a poet’s sensitivity, Warman's voice moves between continents and decades. A celebration of life’s joys and an elegy for what inevitably slips through our grasp.

The Bonfire Party

The preoccupations of Sean O’Brien’s work have for many of us become newly pressing: the recurrence of history, the shadow of war, the precariousness of a peacetime that can no longer be taken for granted. The Bonfire Party, Forward Prize winner Sean O’Brien’s twelfth poetry collection, takes its title from Eric Ravilious’s 1930s painting, where some revellers watch the flames, while others feed them or run towards them, in a scene of ‘mythic Englishness’. In these poems, the long view afforded by experience results in a truer representation of our predicament and a regretful understanding of human culpability. Just as times and places flow together to create a shifting, at times visionary perspective, so too do the presences of those we have lost, ‘love and death consorting as they must’. In a central sequence – a departure for O’Brien – he writes into the rich imaginative climate of George Simenon’s Maigret novels. These poems, both ‘homage and transposition’, effect a poetic communion of sorts with the physical world and moral atmospheres encountered by the inscrutable detective and his creator. The working of the imagination itself has become O’Brien’s true subject, where the fact of the world and the imagined order of literature and art begin to merge.

Seance of the Bees

In this collection of poetry, collage, and nonfiction prose, Séance of the Bees summons the flight patterns of image and text as they move oracularly across collective grief, histories, mouths, rivers, and memory. Taking the planchette as tongue, this work proclaims "I sought to enter her archive. / To lean up against an embankment of self." It speaks to the singular and multiple simultaneously via a lens of ice, the rhizome, a flower, the hive, and of course, the bees. Through vivid artwork and melodic prose, Andrea Rexilius does a close study on craft and self: interrogating where one ends and the other begins. Stemming from mythology and bee shamanism, this collection engages with themes of grief, drag queens, and family history, all the while staying rooted in ecological feminism.

The Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley

The latest volume of the acclaimed and magisterial Hopkins Press edition of Percy Bysshe Shelley's poetry, covering the years 1818 to early 1820, the first phase of Shelley's Italian period. "You talk Utopia," says the worldly Count Maddalo, reproaching the idealistic Julian in Julian and Maddalo. Inspired by conversations conducted on horseback near Venice between the two notorious exiled poets, Shelley and Byron, this poem was among the first of the masterpieces that Shelley wrote after moving with his family in March 1818 from England to post-Napoleonic Italy. The fourth volume of the Hopkins Complete Poetry of Percy Bysshe Shelley covers the years 1818–19 and part of 1820, when Britain was convulsed by popular agitation for the reform of Parliament and stifled by repressive laws against free speech. Among its other contents are The Cenci, an indictment of tyranny, domestic and political, probably the most actable of Romantic dramas; The Mask of Anarchy, the "greatest poem of political protest ever written in English" (too inflammatory to be published at the time); Peter Bell the Third, a brilliant satire on Wordsworth; the fiery sonnet "England in 1819"; an eclogue for women's voices (Rosalind and Helen); playful, sophisticated songs ("Love's Philosophy") and sad verses ("Stanzas, Written in dejection"). Shelley's publications received slashing reviews from politically motivated critics, who attacked his character and principles but acknowledged his poetic gifts. He broadened his scope and composed the most politically engaged poems of his maturity. To quote a Victorian editor, he "ceased to be a subject of Time, and became a citizen of Eternity."As in previous volumes, meticulously edited texts are accompanied by discussions of the poems' composition, the influences they reflect, their publication, reception, and critical history, and detailed records of textual variants. Appendixes range from Mary Shelley's editorial notes to jottings by Shelley drawn from a hitherto unrecognized source for The Cenci. Readers will find in volume four original research, fresh readings, new contexts, and discoveries—hallmarks of this acclaimed edition. Volumes 5, 6, and 8 are in preparation.

Alúzia plná mystifikácií a proklamatívnych vyhlásení, drzá, neúctivá a krutá… a zvláštne pôsobivá. Táto takmer 60-stranová báseň začína poznámkou: „Celý text musíš prečítať na jedenkrát bez prestávky bez možnosti nádychu rýchlo a nervne neusporiadano drzo cynicky s vybitým zubom s hrdzavou podliatinou po náhlej facke a na tvári maska-úsmev!” Gerboc ju písal medzi rokmi 2009 a 2025 ako spektakulárne inscenované predstavenie, ako báseň nerešpektujúcu vlastné hranice, báseň ako teroristický útok, báseň ignorujúcu očakávanú štruktúru básne, báseň s fotografickým sprievodom, notovými partitúrami a filozofickými poznámkami skúmajúcimi možnosti reči. Nemožnosť nádychu, politika tela, sex a tma, spektákel premeny tiel a bizarný scenár natáčania klipu pre dospelých obklopeného hrôzou lágrov a intimitou súkromných honosných sídel. Je to báseň, ktorá kašle na nepripraveného čitateľa. A hlavne žiadny oddych! Tak dýchaj, kým máš kedy. (Báseň vychádza v noci z 31. decembra 2025 na 1. januára 2026.)

In Flaming Letters

A treasury of poetry and prose from an unsung trailblazer of Black literature Lucia M. Pitts ( 1904-1973) was an African American writer and Army veteran whose story has never been told. Her poetry, including love lyrics of striking sensuality and honesty, was admired by Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Dorothy West. Her work first appeared during the Harlem Renaissance, influenced by Harriet Monroe's Poetry magazine and blues singers Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. A native of Chicago's Bronzeville, Pitts challenged discrimination and segregation throughout her remarkable life, both as a member of President Franklin Roosevelt's 'Black Cabinet' and as the first African American woman employed at the War Department. Then, in 1943, Pitts joined the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the Army's only all-Black, all-female battalion, which later received the Congressional Gold Medal. Pitts's own account of her service with the Six Triple Eight, however, has remained unpublished until now. This volume brings together a biography of Pitts, her complete military memoir, and one hundred of her finest poems.

Útek nádeje / The Flight of Hope (obojstranná kniha)

An Orange, A Syllable

A wandering meditation on motherhood, language, and art and a parallactic and slow amble through private rooms and interiors. The result is a woman ricocheting off the bounds of a marriage, memory, and herself. The latest book by Gillian Sze, author of the Pat Lowther Memorial Award-winning book Quiet Night Think. This prosimetrical work is a meditation on motherhood, language, and art. The central speaker witnesses the earliest utterances of her child and launches into a poetic inquiry of words themselves, asking, How to measure one''s mouth by its words? The speaker seeks an answer amidst the language that surrounds her - words misspoken, mispronounced, remembered, unwritten - and, in doing so, struggles with signification and significance. Each prose poem in the five-part collection darts between the many meanings of ''fit'' - as in ''a sudden burst of emotion'' or ''to be the right size and shape,'' and the archaic ''fytte'' (a section of a poem). A text becomes an open mouth, a square day of a calendar, or a bare fragment of a narrative. The final section of the book is an intimate and ekphrastic engagement with the work of Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershoi. Drawn to Hammershoi''s paintings of the empty rooms of his apartment, the speaker recognises a familiar space of art''s insistence. An Orange, A Syllable details a period of maternal and artistic transformation.

Accidents After Happening

Accidents After Happening is for anyone who has a taste for immediate, meaningful poetry that sings, laments, and decries but also celebrates life in our modern world. For readers of Leonard Cohen, Sharon Olds, Gwendolyn MacEwan, Jacques Prevert, George Elliott Clark, Sylvia Plath, Warsan Shire, and Natalie Diaz. The accidents of Priest''s collection are definitely not all ''happy.'' They move through a full range of human emotions: dread, grief, anger, ecstasy, lust and empathy. Plus some magic levity. This is poetry you will want to recite aloud: lyrical love poems, sonnets, satires, ghazals, curses, and bitter invective. These are not snobby poems - they want and welcome readers who love euphony, who enjoy tasteful eroticism, who rage at injustice. People who grieve and gush - smart people who think critically and form their own opinions. And for those with a taste for ''brevity forever.'' Accidents After Happening also contains a whole new catalog of Priest''s aphorisms, proverbs, maxims, and sayings - the kind of work that recently prompted Canadian literary icon Margaret Atwood to take to Twitter and praise Priest''s ''snappy funny spot-on micro poems - plus much more.'' Priest is a people''s poet who believes that humanity harbors a deep and ancient biological need for the spirit and time-binding experiences of the incantatory and shamanistic and that these can only be acquired through the poetic outlook. His words have been quoted in the Farmers'' Almanac, posted in the Toronto transit system, sung in churches, denounced in the legislature, embedded in pavement, and turned into two hit songs. ''Sometimes,'' as one of Priest''s micro poems has it, ''it is the book that opens you.''

NMLCT

These poems explore the tension between the synthetic and authentic, raising hope for an escape from MCHNCT (Machine City) to NMLCT (Animal City), where ''real life'' might still exist. Imagine The Matrix retold by the reanimated cyborg bodies of the Brothers Grimm. Fables and fairytales collide with virtual reality, artificial intelligence, and monstrous myths in a world where no one knows what to believe. In his eighth book of poems, Paul Vermeersch responds to the increasing difficulty of knowing what is real and what isn''t, what is our genuine experience and what is constructed for us by The Algorithm. In a ''post-truth'' society rife with simulations, misinformation, and computer-generated hallucinations, these poems explore the relationship between the synthetic and the authentic as they raise hope for the possibility of escape from MCHNCT (Machine City) to NMLCT (Animal City), where the promise of ''real life'' still exists. These poems - all precisely 16 lines long, identically formed as though mass-produced - are themselves artificial creations, products of the imagination, sometimes disorienting but always vivid. They hold up a mirror not only to nature, but also to its unnatural distortions and facsimiles. In NMLCT, Vermeersch gives us his answer to an existence in thrall to the artificial. But it also foretells a different future, one where the air and the grass and the trees, and all the life they engender, might always be genuine and sensed and safe.
