Zájem o dějiny nemovitostí patří dlouhodobě k nejběžnějším badatelským tématům v archivech a je hned po genealogii druhým nejčastějším důvodem, proč se badatelé na archivní instituce obracejí. Mezi zájemci se neobjevují pouze jednotlivci, ale také firmy, investoři a veřejné instituce, kteří v souvislosti s koupí či rekonstrukcí nemovitosti usilují o získání původní stavební dokumentace a dalších informací o jejím historickém, zejména majetkoprávním vývoji. Jejich pozornost se od prvotního zájmu o stavební a technickou dokumentaci postupně rozšiřuje na otázky související s bývalými majiteli stavby a obecnější historii zázemí objektu.
Nemovitosti jakožto hmotní nositelé historické paměti mnohdy skrývají mimořádně cenné příběhy, ať již v podobě autorství významných architektů, nebo vazeb na osobnosti kulturního, politického či hospodářského života. Právě tento potenciál archivních pramenů stát se klíčem k „příběhům ukrytým v domech“ byl jedním z hlavních impulzů ke vzniku výstavy realizované ve spolupráci Státního oblastního archivu v Praze a Národního technického muzea (dále jen NTM). Pro účely výstavy byly vybrány reprezentativní příklady nemovitostí situovaných na území Středočeského kraje, přičemž byly primárně využity archivní prameny uložené ve výše jmenovaných institucích.
Chronologický rámec výstavy byl vymezen rokem 1948, který představuje zásadní mezník v dějinách vlastnických vztahů v důsledku znárodňovacích procesů. V odůvodněných případech však bylo toto chronologické hledisko překročeno, aby bylo možné názorněji představit další osudy vybraných staveb, například u obytných domů známých jako Věžáky v Kladně. Významnou roli při přípravě výstavy sehrál Archiv architektury a stavitelství NTM, jehož fondy a sbírky včetně pozůstalostí významných architektů představují zásadní pramen pro poznání stavebních dějin 19. a 20. století.
Záměrem autorů bylo vybrat nemovitosti, které se dochovaly do současnosti, aby návštěvník mohl propojit archivní prameny s konkrétním, fyzicky existujícím objektem a případně jej osobně navštívit. Výjimku tvoří synagoga v Příbrami, jejíž zařazení odráží specifické historické okolnosti spojené s perzekucí židovského obyvatelstva během nacistické okupace a obecně nízkou míru dochování těchto staveb i souvisejících pramenů.
Cílem není podat vyčerpávající přehled všech dostupných archivních zdrojů ani přinést nové vědecké interpretace jednotlivých objektů, ale ukázat možnosti archivního bádání a představit návod, kde lze nalézt základní informace o dané nemovitosti. U každého prezentovaného objektu je proto uveden přehled archivů a použitých pramenů, přičemž pro každou stavbu je zvýrazněn vždy jeden archivní fond či sbírka, která je buď pro daný typ objektu charakteristická, nebo naopak upozorňuje na méně intuitivní, avšak badatelsky přínosný zdroj informací.

Kniha začíná ve Florencii analýzou staveb Filippa Bruneleschiho, dále hodnotí tvorbu Michelloza a dalších, zejména Albertiho, jenž jako první pochopil velikost římské imperiální architektury. Kolem 1500 se ohnisko dění přeneslo do Říma, kde působili architekti Bramante, Raffael, Peruzzi, Sangallo a Julio Romano, zatímco na severu Itálie pracovali Serlio, Sanmicheli, Sansovino a další. Proud započatý Albertim uzavírá Andrea Palladio. V Čechách se renesance prosadila na několika zámcích (Kacéřov, Nelahozeves), a později se stala obecnou kulturou doby (Slavonice, Telč).
Kapitola o barokním umění začíná tvorbou Michelangela a jeho činností ve Florencii a zejména v Římě. V duchu tridentské reformy pracovali umělci Vignola, Porta a Maderna. Autor věnuje pozornost velkým astronomickým objevům doby, na něž reagovali architekti Bernini, Borromini a Quarini. Ti otevřeli cestu dalšímu vývoji, který na konci 17. století kulminoval v Podunají. V císařské Vídni na ně navázali architekti Fischer z Erlachu a Lukas Hildebrandt. Vývoj barokní architektury se uzavřel v Čechách v díle třech slavných architektů – Kryštofa a Kiliána Ignáce Dienzenhofera, jejichž současníkem a protipólem byl Giovanni Santini.
Architektura 19. a 20. století začíná v Anglii barokním palladianismem, na nějž navázali tvůrci neopalladianismu a romantismu, jež vrcholí v neogotice. S rozvojem techniky se přistupuje k urbanistickým úpravám měst, v Mnichově a ve Vídni vzniká nový secesní sloh. Po první světové válce dochází k oproštění od historismů, oceňuje se věcnost a pravda, rodí se funkcionalismus. Mencl stručně zmiňuje hlavní tendence a nejvýznamnější architekty 20. století připomíná výmarský Bauhaus a ideál nové věcnosti i tendence konstruktivistů.
Knihu uzavírá přehled Menclových životopisných dat včetně dobových fotografií a jeho kompletní bibliografie.

Totems and Other Essays brings together 14 texts by architect, historian, and critic Irénée Scalbert. Written between 1998 and 2025, they reflect nearly three decades of critical engagement with architecture and its cultural contexts.
