Vivian Maier - Photofile
With the discovery of her archive in a thrift auction house in 2007, Vivian Maier's posthumous trajectory from relative obscurity to one of the great American photographers of the 20th century is a story of a singular consistent talent. From the mid 1950s throughout her adult life she worked as a nanny between New York and Chicago, and it was during this time that she created a huge body of photographs and films recording every day street life, often including her own self portrait and moments of fleeting reflection within the cityscape. The Use of Photography
The Use of Photography recounts a passionate love affair between Annie Ernaux and the journalist and author Marc Marie, after the two met in January 2003. Ernaux had been receiving intensive chemo for breast cancer during the prior three months, and had lost all her hair from the treatments. At the end of January she had surgery, followed by radiation therapy.
The affair took place in different locations and Ernaux describes how, shortly after it began, she found herself entranced each morning by the sight of clothes strewn about, chairs out of place and the remains of their last meal of the evening still on the table – and how painful it felt to put things back in order afterwards. She went and got her camera, and began to take photographs of the scenes of disarray. When she told Marc Marie what she had done, he said he had felt the same desire.
Translated by Alison L. Strayer into English for the first time, The Use of Photography is an extraordinary meditation on eroticism, photography and writing, a major work by the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate.
Portraits in Life and Death
The 1976 publication of Peter Hujar’s Portraits in Life and Death, with an introduction by Susan Sontag, “was and remains one of the most somberly beautiful and influential photography collections of its era” (Holland Cotter, senior art critic of The New York Times). Between June 1972 and July 1973, Daido Moriyama produced his own magazine publication, Kiroku, which was then referred to as Record. It became a diaristic journal of his work as it developed. In 2006, encouraged by the Japanese publisher Akio Nagasawa, Moriyama was able to resume publication of Record.
The first thirty issues of Record were edited by Mark Holborn into the now classic 2017 photobook of the same title. Daido Moriyama: Record 2, also edited by Mark Holborn, picks up from where the original left off, with a selection of images and texts by Moriyama from issues thirty-one to fifty of the magazine. With Moriyama now in his eighties, Record 2 will likely be the end of the story. Petra Skoupilová - Módní fotografie 1975-2003
Fotografie i móda mají v dnešních uměleckoprůmyslových muzeích svoji komfortní, po dekády budovanou pozici. Jejich vzájemný průnik, tedy módní fotografie (a ani užitá fotografie obecně), ovšem doposud nepasuje do kánonu autonomní fotografické tvorby, což nám nedovoluje zkoumat módní fotografii v širším kontextu. Petra Skoupilová (1944–2023) se kromě volné fotografické tvorby (shrnuté již před dvaceti lety publikací Petra Skoupilová: Ženy s textem Anny Fárové) etablovala od konce 70. let jako jedna z mála českých fotografek módy. Její bohaté dílo ukazuje ojedinělou a nelehkou cestu emancipované a cílevědomé profesionálky v turbulentních časech našich nedávných dějin, ale přináší rovněž koncentrovaný pohled na dosud málo zmapovanou historii české módy posledního půlstoletí. V září 1976 navštívila Skoupilová poprvé Přátelské setkání na Bertramce, tehdy začínající alternativní přehlídku šperků. Několik dalších ročníků přehlídky, již rozšířených o progresivní módní tvorbu, jí pak přineslo řadu důležitých přátelství i kontaktů a uprostřed normalizace také velmi cennou inspiraci a motivaci. Od této doby se datovala spolupráce Petry Skoupilové s předními módními návrhářkami a návrháři (Liběna Rochová, Jaroslava Procházková, Daniela Flejšarová, Michal Švarc a další), která kulminovala v 80. a 90. letech nespočetným množstvím publikovaných snímků v časopisech, reklamních kampaní i dokumentačních fotografií. Skoupilová fotografovala též tvorbu pražských modelových salonů (Styl, Eva), práce mladých módních tvůrců a studentů oděvních škol a pořizovala reklamní fotografie pro textilní průmysl a podniky zahraničního obchodu. Její fotografie se objevily na více než 150 obálkách většiny českých časopisů.
Marvin E. Newman
In 1952, after becoming one of the first-ever recipients of a Master of Science degree in Photography at Chicago's Institute of Design, native New Yorker Marvin E. Newman returned to his hometown. Like many artists before, he set about chronicling the city. Unlike his predecessors, Newman chose color photography as the preeminent medium for capturing the people and energy of New York, and its emergence in the 1950s as the self-proclaimed "Greatest City in the World."
Lauded by the likes of Eastman House, MoMA, and the International Center of Photography, Newman's images remained, up until now, largely undiscovered beyond a prestigious collector and gallery circle. After featuring Newman in New York: Portrait of a City, TASCHEN now presents the artist's first career monograph including some 170 pictures from the late 1940s through the early 1980s, previously available in a Collector's Edition. Newman passed away in 2023 at the age of 95.
From Times Square to Wall Street, from Broadway to Little Italy, Newman's vivid, original tableaux offer fresh perspectives on familiar New York landmarks but, above all, a unique sense for life in the city and for the drama and extremities that weld New York to so many hearts. Beyond New York, Newman applies the same flawless technique and humanist sensibility to other locations across the United States including Chicago, Kansas, a vintage 1950s circus; a legalized brothel in Reno, Nevada; Las Vegas; Alaska; and groovy 1960s California; as well as top shots from his sports photography portfolio featuring icons such as Cassius Clay and Pele´.
