Nefotografie

Knihu tvoria texty 55 slovenských fotografov a fotografiek, ktorých Mária Piatriková oslovila s otázkou: „Akú svoju nezachytenú fotografiu máte stále v pamäti?” Dopĺňa ju rozhovor fotografky Veroniky M. Markovičovej s režisérkou Máriou Piatrikovou a niekoľko záberov z tvorivého procesu. Autori textov: Juraj Bartoš, Laura Belišová, Leontína Berková, Pavol Breier, Dávid Doroš, Radovan Dranga, Peter Fabo, Petra Feriancová, Jana Gombíková, Matej Hakár, Milota Havránková, Táňa Hojčová, Alan Hyža, Dominika Jackuliaková, Lena Jakubčáková, Jakub Jančo, Daniela Kapráľová, Šymon Kliman, Robo Kočan, Martin Kochan, Dušan Kochol, Martin Kollár, Peter Korček, Lenka L. New Orleans

Southern flair between jazz, blues and soul: the colorful New Orleans coffee table book Is it possible to capture the energetic, chaotic and enjoyable lifestyle of the southern states in a coffee table book? The unconventional photographer and artist Werner Pawlok succeeds with this colorful photography book! With his camera, he portrays New Orleans, affectionately known as "Nola" for short, in all its colorful diversity: street life between soul and blues, the colonial-style architecture so typical of Louisiana and, of course, the people who shape life in the "Big Easy". A visually stunning journey through the fun-loving jazz, blues and soul city in the south of the USA - New Orleans! A visually stunning coffee table book in the footsteps of Cajuns and Creoles This magnificent photo book reveals everything that makes a trip to New Orleans worthwhile: the colorful architecture of the metropolis on the Mississippi, still influenced by the colonial era, breathes the culture of the Cajuns and Creoles in Louisiana. Pawlok also immerses himself with his camera in places where the attitude to life in the southern states is more tangible than anywhere else in the USA: the bars and pubs of the French Quarter, considered the cradle of jazz, blues and soul, the lively life on the streets, colorful graffiti - and right in the middle of it all, the people of the dazzling music and art scene. Magnificently illustrated book with a flair for photographing an attitude to life Ever since his exhibition successes in the 1980s, Werner Pawlok, born in Stuttgart in 1953, has been able to be mentioned in the same breath as art greats such as Warhol, Richter and Mapplethorpe. His unconventional portrait photography breathes intense closeness. And whether he is tracing the spirit of the past in New Orleans' colonial-era architecture or embarking on a journey into the heart of Cajun culture in the streets of "Nola" between street art and blues bars - Pawlok's unconventional style also shapes this opulent, colorful coffee table book.

Petra Skoupilová - Módní fotografie 1975-2003

Fotografie i móda mají v dnešních uměleckoprůmyslových muzeích svoji komfortní, po dekády budovanou pozici. Jejich vzájemný průnik, tedy módní fotografie (a ani užitá fotografie obecně), ovšem doposud nepasuje do kánonu autonomní fotografické tvorby, což nám nedovoluje zkoumat módní fotografii v širším kontextu. Skoupilová fotografovala též tvorbu pražských modelových salonů (Styl, Eva), práce mladých módních tvůrců a studentů oděvních škol a pořizovala reklamní fotografie pro textilní průmysl a podniky zahraničního obchodu. Její fotografie se objevily na více než 150 obálkách většiny českých časopisů.

Marvin E. Newman

In 1952, after becoming one of the first-ever recipients of a Master of Science degree in Photography at Chicago's Institute of Design, native New Yorker Marvin E. Newman returned to his hometown. Like many artists before, he set about chronicling the city. Unlike his predecessors, Newman chose color photography as the preeminent medium for capturing the people and energy of New York, and its emergence in the 1950s as the self-proclaimed "Greatest City in the World." Lauded by the likes of Eastman House, MoMA, and the International Center of Photography, Newman's images remained, up until now, largely undiscovered beyond a prestigious collector and gallery circle. After featuring Newman in New York: Portrait of a City, TASCHEN now presents the artist's first career monograph including some 170 pictures from the late 1940s through the early 1980s, previously available in a Collector's Edition. Newman passed away in 2023 at the age of 95. From Times Square to Wall Street, from Broadway to Little Italy, Newman's vivid, original tableaux offer fresh perspectives on familiar New York landmarks but, above all, a unique sense for life in the city and for the drama and extremities that weld New York to so many hearts. Beyond New York, Newman applies the same flawless technique and humanist sensibility to other locations across the United States including Chicago, Kansas, a vintage 1950s circus; a legalized brothel in Reno, Nevada; Las Vegas; Alaska; and groovy 1960s California; as well as top shots from his sports photography portfolio featuring icons such as Cassius Clay and Pele´. Newman, who is represented by the prestigious Howard Greenberg Gallery, was long overdue a monograph. With an essay by critic and scholar Lyle Rexer, this first chronological retrospective offers due recognition to an outstanding talent, providing memorable images that leave their mark on the eye and the soul.

Peter Lindbergh. Dior. 40th Ed.

Peter Lindbergh photographed Dior's most exceptional muses, Marion Cotillard and Charlize Theron among them, and signed campaigns for Lady Dior and J'Adore with his inimitable style. Throughout his career, the photographer was one of the house's closest collaborators. This final book was an original cocreation that was close to the artist's heart-and to ours. Seventy years of Dior history projected against the effervescence of Times Square, New York: this was the concept behind Lindbergh's project, extraordinary both in scope and dimension, for which Dior, in an unusual move, allowed an unprecedented number of priceless garments to be taken from its vaults in Paris and shipped across the Atlantic. The result is electric. Amid the frenzy of Times Square, Alek Wek glows in the immaculate 1947 Bar suit, the storied ensemble that launched the House of Dior. In snatches of street scenes, models Saskia de Brauw, Karen Elson, and Amber Valletta flit through crowds and scaffolding, are reflected in building façades, and draped in haute couture, from pieces hand-sewn by Christian Dior to more recent designs by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Lindbergh's trademark monochrome and color photographs masterfully highlight the intricacies, silhouettes, and textures of each garment. Lindbergh himself is present in every aspect of this publication designed by his long-time collaborator and friend Juan Gatti. This volume features 165 never-before-published images from the shoot, including an introduction by Martin Harrison, and pays homage to Lindbergh's profound relationship with the Parisian House by curating more than 100 of his photographs of Dior creations, from haute couture to ready-to-wear, men's and women's, originally published in some of the world's most prestigious magazines such as Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. A breathtaking tribute to two pillars of fashion and photography and their timeless collaborations.

Chess Players

A photobook dedicated to players throughout time who have tried their hand at the beloved cerebral game, featuring text penned by chess enthusiast and acclaimed author Martin Amis This is a book for chess Grandmasters, novices and inquiring laymen alike. It is a book for anyone who has wondered, as Martin Amis wryly asks in his contributing text, “What are they playing at?” Marcel Duchamp’s iconic quote, “All chess players are artists,” resonates throughout the volume. David Hockney likened the game’s strategic thinking to that of making art: “Drawing is rather like playing chess: your mind races ahead of the moves that you eventually make.” “Chess is war over the board,” said Bobby Fischer, Grandmaster and World Chess Champion, but here John Lennon and Yoko Ono checkmate this notion, with their all-white chess “peace” set. Chess Players: From Charlie Chaplin to Wu-Tang Clan compiles photographs of notable figures playing the beloved game of strategy over the course of 130 years. The volume strings together zany and remarkable moments in time. In one image, players are captured on board a steamship crossing the Atlantic in 1888; in another, an astronaut studies a board in space. And, as the title suggests, Hollywood celebrities frequent the book’s pages, playing chess on and off the screen: Humphrey Bogart deploys a Sicilian Defense against Lauren Bacall, while Faye Dunaway and Steve McQueen plot their next gambit in the iconic chess seduction scene from The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). Featuring an introduction by Dylan Loeb McClain, former chess columnist for the New York Times, the photographs in Chess Players evince the enduring attraction of this cerebral game. The volume also features an interview with Viswanathan Anand, who is inarguably one of the greatest chess players in history.

Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Decisive Moment

A new edition of one of the most important and genre-defining photobooks of the twentieth century. The Decisive Moment (Images á la Sauvette in French) is one of the greatest photography books ever published. It brings together photographic material from the first twenty years of Henri Cartier-Bresson's career. Images á la Sauvette was published in 1952 by Verve, with an original cover by Matisse. It was the result of a collaboration between the photographer, the famous art critic and publisher Tériade, and the painter, at the peak of his career. The American version, published the same year by Simon and Schuster, was the first to introduce the now-famous expression "decisive moment." The book, which reveals the intrinsic duality of Henri Cartier-Bresson's work, the combination of intimate interpretation with documentary observation, received tremendous critical acclaim within the art world and is considered a "bible for photographers," in the words of photographer Robert Capa. It remains an essential reference for photographers to this day. The original book, now out of print, has become a collector's item. The Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson sought to make this classic photography book accessible again, in a smaller and practical format, at an affordable price. The latest print features the same material as the original 1952 edition, and is accompanied by a comprehensive study of the book's making, its enduring popularity, and the considerations behind its title, written by Clément Chéroux, director of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson. Illustrated in color and black-and-white throughout

Robert Doisneau. Paris

As sensitive to human suffering as to the simple pleasures of life, Robert Doisneau is one of the most celebrated exponents of the Photographie humaniste that swept through the 1950s. Cherished in particular for his soulful portraits of Paris, Doisneau demonstrated a unique ability to find – and perfectly frame – charismatic characters, entertaining episodes, and fleeting moments of humor and affection. A summation of a spectacular career, this extensive Doisneau collection includes all his best-loved images from Paris alongside many lesser-known compositions which equally rejoice in “the ordinary gestures of ordinary people in ordinary situations.” The many quotations from the photographer throughout the volume immerse the reader in Doisneau’s thoughts and give verbal expression to the sensitivity, warmth, and wit which characterize his pictures. Through the images, we are transported to the grim suburbs of Doisneau’s youth; the world of manual labor whose nobility he so admired; and to the studios of the many groundbreaking artists that Doisneau captured in moments of reflection and creativity. A number of color shots of the transformed suburbs of Doisneau’s childhood reveal a different, more critical eye to the master photographer. For this new monograph on all aspects of the life and oeuvre of Robert Doisneau, his longtime friend and TASCHEN author Jean Claude Gautrand had unlimited access to the extensive photo archive Atelier Robert Doisneau. The preface is by Doisneau’s daughters Francine Deroudille and Annette Doisneau.

Looking at Photographs

A new introductory guide to the art of looking at and engaging with photography. Photographs, even the most iconic, often have something seemingly obvious about them. They appear to represent the "real" world and our first instinct is that they can be easily interpreted, which is not always the case with paintings. But this sense of familiarity with photography can lead to ambiguities. Looking at Photographs outlines key approaches to help us understand why a photograph captures our attention and moves us. This introductory reference is structured to help you develop new and more in-depth ways of looking at images, whether as a viewer or practitioner?or just out snapping with your smartphone. Everything counts in a good photograph, even down to the smallest details. Across seven chapters, visual culture expert Laurent Jullier discusses themes and concepts that are essential to understanding the medium, including photography as a reflection of reality; manipulation and defamiliarization; focus, perspective, and space; time and the moment; identity, portraits, and selfies; and the power of images. With examples drawn from across the world and throughout the history of photography, from Louis Daguerre to Julia Margaret Cameron, László Moholy-Nagy, Dorothea Lange, Andreas Gursky, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Dayanita Singh, Eva Woolridge, and many others; in addition to a helpful glossary of terms, Looking at Photographs is not just about learning "how to read" photographs, it is about knowing how to ask the right questions when you look at images. 103 color illustrations

House Of Psychotic Women

HOUSE OF PSYCHOTIC WOMEN has attained canonical status, having ushered in a new way of writing about film. Kier-La Janisse's acclaimed book is an autobiographical exploration of female neurosis in horror and exploitation films that examines hundreds of films through a daringly personal lens. In this pioneering work, anecdotes and memories interweave with film history, criticism, trivia and confrontational imagery to create a reflective personal history and a consideration of female madness, both onscreen and off. Following the extraordinary success of its 10th anniversary expanded hardcover re-issue, which features new reviews of 100 more films - many of which were inspired in part by the book itself - and hundreds of new images, FAB Press have now published an affordable paperback edition. Cinema is full of neurotic personalities, but few things are more transfixing than a woman losing her mind onscreen. Horror as a genre provides the most welcoming platform for these histrionics: crippling paranoia, desperate loneliness, masochistic death-wishes, dangerous obsessiveness, apocalyptic hysteria. Unlike her male counterpart - 'the eccentric' - the female neurotic lives a shamed existence, making these films those rare places where her destructive emotions get to play. This sharply-designed book, including a 48-page full-colour section, is packed with 680 rare stills, posters, pressbooks and artwork throughout, that combine with family photos and artifacts to form a titillating sensory overload, with a filmography that traverses the acclaimed and the obscure in equal measure. Films covered include The Entity, The Corruption of Chris Miller, Singapore Sling, 3 Women, Toys Are Not for Children, Repulsion, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, The Haunting of Julia, Secret Ceremony, Cutting Moments, Out of the Blue, Mademoiselle, The Piano Teacher, Possession, Antichrist and hundreds more!
