Helmut Newton - Berlin, Berlin
Born in Berlin in 1920, Helmut Newton trained as a teenager with legendary photographer Yva, following her lead into the enticing pastures of fashion, portraiture and nudes. Forced to flee the Nazis aged only 18, Newton never left Berlin behind. After his career exploded in Paris in the 1960s, he returned regularly to shoot for magazines like Constanze, Adam, Vogue, Condé Nast's Traveler, ZEITmagazin, Männer Vogue, Max and the Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin as well as his own magazine Helmut Newton's Illustrated.
In 1979, the newly relaunched German Vogue commissioned him to retrace the footsteps of his youth to capture the fashion moment. The resulting portfolio, Berlin, Berlin!, inspired the title of the exhibition which celebrates 20 years of the Helmut Newton Foundation.
This collection includes Newton's most iconic Berlin images, as well as many unknown shots from the 1930s to the 2000s: nightcrawlers in uber-cool clubs and restaurants, nude portraits in the boarding houses he knew from his youth, and the Berlin film scene, featuring Hanna Schygulla and Wim Wenders at the Berlin Wall, John Malkovich and David Bowie.
In October 2003, only months before his death, Newton moved large parts of his archive to his new foundation, housed in the Museum of Photography beside the Zoologischer Garten station-the very station from which he fled Berlin in the winter of 1938. This publication thus closes a circle in the story of his extraordinary life and work.

Letizia Battaglia: Life, Love and Death in Sicily
Letizia Battaglia is the catalogue published on the occasion of the monographic exhibition open to the public from Oct. 8, 2024 to Feb. 23, 2025 at the Photographer's Gallery in London, curated by Paolo Falcone, in collaboration with the Letizia Battaglia Archive, Falcone Foundation for the Arts, and with the contribution of Candido Speroni and Carla Fendi Speroni Foundation and the Italian Cultural Institute of London.
The exhibition, like the catalog, testifies to Italian life and society with photographs from the great photographer's historical archive. For nearly fifty years Letizia Battaglia has photographed, observed and lived intensely her time and especially her city, Palermo. Letizia Battaglia is a tribute to her work, her intense and new gaze, her yearning for freedom and her always being a woman against the tide. It is an uninterrupted album that goes from Milan to the face of Pier Paolo Pasolini, from the many mafia deaths to the unconscious elegance of the little girls of the Cala district in Palermo; and then the religious processions, the faces of Piersanti Mattarella, Giovanni Falcone up to the ferocious boss Leoluca Bagarella. For almost fifty years, Letizia Battaglia has photographed, observed and experienced her time and above all her city, Palermo.

Zaměřuje se primárně na způsoby využití fotografie pro sociální klasifikaci a kontrolu. Ukazuje, jak se již raná fotografie stala prostředkem k diagnostice sociální patologie v důsledku souběhu několika faktorů jako bylo zvýšené využívání fotografie policií, popularita fyziognomie a frenologie či přijetí teorie pozitivismu. Systematické snahy o regulaci nebezpečných tříd vyvrcholily v 19. století širokým používáním fotografie a vývojem dvou různých archivačních systémů pro identifikaci a regulaci zločinců pomocí fotografie: Bertillona, který svůj systém stavěl na individualitě a Galtona, který vycházel z koncepce sociálního typu. Oba přitom budovali své fotografické archivy na základech rozvíjející se sociální statistiky a Queteletovy koncepce „průměrného člověka“. Na základě analýzy vztahů mezi fotografií, statistikou, archivy, administrativou apod. Sekula dokládá provázanost ceremoniální a represivní funkce fotografie.
Stejně jako u ostatních titulů edice je překlad opatřen doslovem, který představí širší kontext autorova díla, souvislost s ostatními tituly a jeho aktuální relevanci.

American Artifacts
The companion volume to Matt Black’s critically acclaimed American Geography presents a deeper view of his six-year odyssey documenting poverty in the United States of America.
During his six-year journey across the United States creating the project that became American Geography, Matt Black collected objects in the locations he visited. Each location is designated as an area of ‘concentrated poverty’ – a US Census definition for places with poverty rates of 20% or higher. Over time, the objects he found and collected began to take on symbolic significance.
As Black crisscrossed the United States, his collection grew into the thousands: plastic spoons and forks, lottery tickets, liquor bottles, lighters and matchbooks. Some items were important, like job applications, medical paperwork, driver’s licenses; some were lost personal effects, like family photographs, bracelets, eyeglasses, notes and letters. And there was the detritus of labour: work gloves, broken tools and supplies, wire, bolts, padlocks and bent nails.
This new monograph, presented as a companion volume to Black’s seminal photobook, American Geography, presents photographs of these objects, assemblages and collages, previously unpublished images from American Geography, and the voices of those who are cut off from the ‘American Dream’.
These humble, discarded objects form a portrait of America assembled from its roadways and sidewalks, an archaeology of dispossession. For those who follow Black’s photographic work and his unflinching critique of inequality in the United States, this book is an essential volume.

Steve Schapiro - Andy Warhol and Friends
In 1965, Steve Schapiro started documenting Andy Warhol for LIFE magazine: Warhol was cementing a reputation as an important Pop artist who drew his inspiration from popular culture and commercial objects. With his sunglasses, blond wig, and bland public utterances, Warhol was enigmatic, charismatic, intensely ambitious, and aware that to become a star, you needed the presence of people to document your ascent. Schapiro, also ambitious and hardworking, who in his own words "kept quiet and smiled a lot," was an ideal witness to Warhol's relentless rise from cult New York artist to 20th-century icon. Ironically, LIFE never published the story, so many of these images are seen here for the first time, scanned from negatives found deep in Schapiro's archive.
Between 1965 and 1966, Schapiro busily photographed Warhol and his entourage of superstars, including the legendary Edie Sedgwick and Nico, hanging out art openings,. making his underground movie Camp, working on his silkscreens at the Factory, and roaming the streets of New York. Schapiro was also present at the opening of Warhol's first museum retrospective at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, attended by a hyped-up crowd of thousands -the night where art's coolest new king was crowned and Andymania was born. The final stop on the Warhol express train is Los Angeles, where Andy exhibited his ironic Silver Clouds at the Ferus Gallery, stayed at the picturesque Castle, and set up and filmed a performance by cult band the Velvet Underground.
Featuring more than 120 photographs, Schapiro's images are juxtaposed with tipped-in plates of original Warhol artworks exhibited during the period. The art works include Before and After, 4, 1962, Colored Campbell's Soup Can, 1965, S&H Green Stamps, 1965, One Dollar Bills (Fronts), 1962, 100 Cans, 1962, Flowers, 1965, Shot Red Marilyn, 1964, Elvis I and II [Elvis Diptych] [Ferus Type], 1963-64, Green Disaster # 2 (Green Disaster Ten Times), 1963, White Disaster (White Car Crash 19 Times), 1963, and many others. Also featuring an interview with Steve Schapiro, who passed away in early 2022, and an essay and extended captions by official Warhol biographer Blake Gopnik. Andy Warhol and Friends 1965-1966 is a definitive portrait of a groundbreaking artist at a transformative period in postwar American culture.

Now, James Baldwin’s rich, raw, and ever relevant prose is reprinted with more than 100 photographs from Steve Schapiro, who traveled the American South with Baldwin for Life magazine. The encounter thrust Schapiro into the thick of the movement, allowing for vital, often iconic, images both of civil rights leaders—including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Fred Shuttlesworth, and Jerome Smith—and such landmark events as the March on Washington and the Selma march.
