Lucian Freud - Drawing into Painting
Drawing into Painting reveals Lucian Freud’s lifelong focus on the human face and form, tracing the intimate dialogue between his sketches and paintings from the 1930s to the early 21st century. Lucian Freud (1922–2011) is celebrated as one of the great figurative realist artists of the twentieth century, who devoted his artistic life to portraiture. Kniha věnovaná Ladislavu Smočkovi (?1932), českému dramatiku a režisérovi, spoluzakladateli Činoherního klubu, představuje jeho dílo od poloviny 50. let 20. století k dnešku.
Prostřednictvím Smočkovy částečně autobiografické hry Nejlepší den (kterou uvedl v Divadle J. K. Tyla v Plzni v roce 1995) nahlíží dobu, již prožil v Protektorátu Čechy a Morava a ve dnech vítězství nad nacismem, když Plzeň osvobodila americká armáda. Monografie přibližuje Smočkovy inscenace z prvních angažmá v Benešově a v Divadle Julia Fučíka v Brně (Pavlíčkův Slavík a Labyrint srdce, Goldoniho Poprask na laguně, Goodrichové a Hackettův Deník Anny Frankové ad.) i jeho působení v Laterně magice. Doširoka se zaobírá vznikem Činoherního klubu v roce 1965 a Smočkovými původními hrami a inscenacemi z prvních sedmi let existence divadla (Piknik, Bludiště a Podivné odpoledne dr. Zvonka Burkeho, Kosmické jaro). Jsou zde nahlíženy jako „divadlo režírovaného herce“ a zachycují tak nejen osobnost a umění Ladislava Smočka, ale i hereček a herců, již se stali jedinečnými spolutvůrci těchto inscenací. I Smočkova vrcholná režisérská díla z pozdější doby (O’Neillová Cesta dlouhého dne do noci, Zuckmayerův Hejtman z Kopníku, Horváthovy Povídky z Vídeňského lesa a Gogolovi Hráči z přelomu 70. a 80. let a po roce 1989 pak Birinského Mumraj, inscenace českých komediografů 19. a 20. století, Kunderova Ptákovina ad.) jsou tu zároveň obrazem souboru a společenství Činoherního klubu. Na základě původního výzkumu kniha představuje Smočkovy pohostinské režie v zahraničí, zejména v curyšském Theater am Neumarkt a Theater im Depot (Depot Tiefenbrunnen).
Komiks a/jako reklama
Po úspěšné publikaci Dějiny československého komiksu 20. století se polovina jejího autorského týmu rozhodla soustředit na specifickou část domácí komiksové produkce – obrázkové seriály užívané jako prostředek reklamy. Předkládaná kniha se tak věnuje vztahu komiksu a tiskové reklamy, podrobně mapuje, jaké seriály a jakým způsobem byly užívány k propagaci různých produktů a služeb, a to od roku 1900, prvního doloženého výskytu inzerce ve formě obrázkového seriálu, až po dravá devadesátá léta 20. století. Bohatě ilustrovaný svazek s rozsáhlou obrazovou přílohou připomíná řadu pozoruhodných, leč pozapomenutých komiksových reklamních fenoménů, jejichž tvorbě se věnovali jak v dané době nejvýraznější komiksoví výtvarníci, tak i zkušení propagační grafici.
Publikace sleduje i různé kontexty spojení titulních fenoménů či jejich dobovou odbornou reflexi a představuje i nekomiksovou propagační tvorbu nejvýznamnějších osobností, kteří reklamní komiksy tvořili, od Josefa Lady a Ondřeje Sekory po Káju Saudka a Jaroslava Němečka.

Frank Frazetta
Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed king of fantasy art for well over 50 years, the value of his paintings now climbing as high as his fans’ admiration. Each year his works break the previous year’s auction records, with the cover for Lancer books 1967 Conan bringing $13.5 million in September 2025.Born to a Sicilian immigrant family in Brooklyn, 1928, Frazetta was a minor league athlete, petty criminal and serial seducer with movie star looks and phenomenal talent. Self-described as lazy and difficult, he often started a painting the night before it was due, completing it in mere hours, yet delivering a masterpiece—often still wet, but a masterpiece, nonetheless.
He started in comics at age 16, including the infamous EC Comics, moved on to film posters, then to Tarzan and Conan pulp covers. Along the way he produced magazine covers for National Lampoon, though at odds with the editors’ “hippy politics,” made the animated film Fire & Ice with director Ralph Bakshi, and learned to paint left-handed at age 68 after the first of many strokes paralyzed his right hand. As he explained in the 1970s, “I’m very physical minded.
In Brooklyn, I knew Conan, I knew guys just like him.” Using this first-hand knowledge of muscle and macho he redefined fantasy heroes as more massive, more menacing, more testosterone-fueled than anything seen before, and their female counterparts as thick-thighed, heavy-buttocked, and pixie-faced, yet still, with their soft bellies and hints of cellulite, believably real. All in all, Frazetta’s art is addictive as potato chips, and now available in a compact, attractive and affordable package.
