Celebrating the dynamic and enduring collaboration between two icons of fashion and photography
In the 1970s, despite not yet knowing each other, Azzedine Alaia and Arthur Elgort were responding to a similar current within the cultural landscape. Alaia realized that fashion had changed; its locus had shifted from the salons to the streets. Elgort, then a young photographer for American Vogue, was in the process of establishing a new vision for photography that also moved outdoors, away from the studio; his “snapshots'' ushered in a more informal photographic style marked by its spontaneity. Both actively contributed to popularizing the mobile, assertive and independent woman within fashion.
This book commemorates the long collaboration between Ala?a and Elgort. Many of the images produced by the duo are considered classics, emblematic of the late 20th century. This volume reproduces approximately 200 of these dynamic, playful photographs, many of which feature Ala?a himself.
Arthur Elgort (born 1940) studied painting at Hunter College but quickly transitioned to photography. In his long career he has worked on many major advertising campaigns, including for Chanel, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent, shot countless fashion spreads and published several books, including Personal Fashion (1983), The Swan Prince (1987), Models Manual (1993), Ballet Camera Crazy (2004), The Big Picture (2014), Jazz (2018) and I Love…. (2019).
Azzedine Alaia (1935–2017) was a Tunisian couturier and shoe designer. He produced his first ready-to-wear collection in 1980. When his clothes were first sold at Bergdorf Goodman in 1982, it was considered so momentous that the New York Times later listed it as among the landmark events that altered the city’s cultural landscape. Among his devotees were Grace Jones (who wore several of his creations in A View to a Kill), Tina Turner, Raquel Welch, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Naomi Campbell.

Harry Gruyaert
New in the Photofile series, a mini-monograph on Belgian photographer Harry Gruyaert. Born in Antwerp in 1941, Harry Gruyaert was a pioneer of European colour photography in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1972, he created TV Shots, a series of images created by turning the dial on a television set at random and photographing the screen.
Later he travelled the world, seeking out different kinds of light and exhibiting a particular fascination with borders, interfaces and incongruous juxtapositions. A member of Magnum Photos since 1982, he describes colour as 'a means of sculpting what I see ... it's the emotion of photography.' Most recently he has begun to explore the experimental freedom offered by digital photography.
Autonomous, non-narrative and often witty, Gruyaert's images are complex encounters with colour and light.
Gregory Crewdson
Crewdson's epic photographic trilogy—a portrait of America a decade in the making
Over the past three decades, Gregory Crewdson has been fleshing out a portrait of middle America, an America gazing wide-eyed at the glimmers of a fading dream. His cinematographically staged photos have pieced together the fragments of a twilight world tinged with numbness.
This book brings together three bodies of work made between 2012 and 2022: Cathedral of the Pines (2012-14), An Eclipse of Moths (2018-19) and Eveningside (2021-22). Envisaged as a trilogy, they provide unique insight into a decade of creation and offer a comprehensive view of the universe that has positioned Crewdson as one of the major figures of contemporary photography. This trilogy is introduced by Fireflies (1996), a pivotal series for grasping the intimate undercurrents in Crewdson's work.
Gregory Crewdson (born 1962) is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale School of Art, where he is now the director of graduate studies in photography. His series Beneath the Roses is the subject of the 2012 documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters. His work has been exhibited widely in the US and Europe. Crewdson is represented by Gagosian Gallery, New York.
I Wanna Be An Influencer (Bilingual edition)
I wanna be an Influencer is a photographic journey that maps out the new geography of places based on the choices of influencers, a social category that has become an undisputed reference point over the last decade for marketing any type of product, from clothing to cosmetics, travel and new destinations.
The author particularly reflects on one of the aspects that characterizes tourism in the time of Instagram. Destinations that are already well-known or completely unknown become sought-after, inducing a mass of aspiring influencers to adopt the same poses and behaviour because and as long as they are Instagrammable.
A kaleidoscope of images, taken behind the scenes of a real community that aims for the immediate sharing of experiences in old and new "elsewheres" and of places whose meaning has changed. Způsoby vzájemné reflexe práce jedince i společnosti v českém prostředí, kdy se dějiny fotografie protnuly se sociálně-pracovními dějinami člověka, ilustrativně ukážeme na profesi fotografa. Publikace je zároveň teoretickým úvodem ke stejnojmenné on-line fotografické výstavě na webových stránkách Národního muzea. Kniha obsahuje na 100 fotografií předních českých fotografů, jako je Libuše Jarcovjáková, Viktor Kolář, Karel Cudlín, Antonín Kratochvíl a další.
Česká divadelní fotografie - Vilém Sochůrek
Vilém Sochůrek (1944–1976) je významnou osobností české divadelní fotografie. Navzdory krátkosti svého života za sebou zanechal rozsáhlý soubor unikátních fotografií. Divadlu se věnoval od svých 17 let, kdy fotografoval v Divadle Rokoko. Od roku 1965 až do své smrti pracoval v Divadelním ústavu, kde vytvořil fond fotografické a scénografické dokumentace (jednalo se o více než 10 tisíc položek, a to v době před digitalizací). Vedle fotografování inscenací se věnoval dokumentaci scénografických artefaktů – především v rámci mezinárodní scénografické přehlídky Pražské Quadriennale. Mezi jeho nejvýznamnější snímky patří fotografie z inscenací Národního divadla, Činoherního klubu, Divadla Na zábradlí, Vinohradského divadla, Divadla E. F. Buriana a mnohých dalších. Sochůrek se vedle divadla věnoval úspěšně také hudbě. Publikace je doplněna portréty osobností jak z divadelního, tak hudebního prostředí (Zdeněk Štěpánek, Jiří Suchý, Ivan Vyskočil, Ctibor Turba, Marta Kubišová, Waldemar Matuška ad.). V roce 1974 na IV. Mezinárodním trienále divadelní fotografie v Novém sadu získal Vilém Sochůrek zlatou medaili.

In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. With it landed Bowie's Stardust alter ego: a glitter-clad, mascara-eyed, sexually ambiguous persona who kicked down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, fact and fiction into one shifting and sparkling phenomenon of '70s self-expression. Together, Ziggy the album and Ziggy the stage spectacular propelled the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world's biggest stars.
A key passenger on this glam trip into the stratosphere was fellow Londoner and photographer Mick Rock. Rock bonded with Bowie artistically and personally, immersed himself in the singer's inner circle, and, between 1972 and 1973, worked as the singer's photographer and videographer.
This collection brings together spectacular stage shots, iconic photo shoots, as well as intimate backstage portraits. It celebrates Bowie's fearless experimentation and reinvention, while offering privileged access to the many facets of his personality and fame. The Little Book of Tom. Cops & Robbers
Tom's taste for police officers and felons-and for sexual tension between the two-developed late in his career. "I've never been to prison," he told a class at the California Institute of the Arts in 1985, "but I hear it's a closed world where there are different roles and people behave different from when they walk free. It fascinates me. It is another subject I come back to again and again." By which he meant fantasized about again and again, since only those subjects that aroused him sexually made it into his art.
The uniforms of the California Highway Patrol motorcyclists were his favorite: tan and tight, with high boots and soft black leather gauntlet gloves. He created his own uniform variants as well, a cross between military and civilian police gear, and invented suitably butch criminals for his cops to apprehend, though once apprehended the power struggle could go either way. Tom was determined to show top and bottom as equally masculine roles, and his cops were as likely to end up happily speared by criminal cock as delivering corrective coitus. Though criticized by some for what appeared to be a glorification of power, Tom was always quick to remind that the world he created was a fantasy world, where anything was possible, and everything was consensual-even in prison.
The Little Book of Tom: Cops & Robbers explores Tom's fascination with criminal justice through a mixture of multi-panel comics and single-panel drawings and paintings, all in a compact and affordable 192 pages.
