Eye Mama

The Eye Mama book is a photographic portfolio showcasing the mama narrative and the mama gaze, what female and non-binary photographers see when they look at, and into the home. Based on the Eye Mama Project, a photography platform sharing a curated feed by photographers worldwide who identify as mamas, the Eye Mama book brings together more than 150 images to render what is so often invisible - caregiving, mothering, family and the post-motherhood self - visible. Eye mama was created by BAFTA-nominated filmmaker and photographer Karni Arieli during the pandemic, when everyone around the world was in lockdown and spending more time in the home, often consumed by caregiving. The visual movement centres around the "mama gaze", an introspective look at home and care by female and non-binary visual artists. This iconic book of photographs brings together the images from this movement, experiencing the light and dark of care and parenthood, the beauty of close-up details, love and hardship, and most importantly, the personal poetic truths of these mamas and artists. The Eye Mama book highlights the narrative of motherhood, allowing us to see for the first time in history through the eyes of mamas worldwide, because mama gaze matters! The Eye Mama Project has been featured in National Geographic, Vogue, Stern, Romper, British Journal of Photography, Creative Review and more. Text in English and German.

Walter Chandoha. Cats. Photographs 1942-2018

On a winter’s night in 1949 in New York City, young marketing student and budding photographer Walter Chandoha spotted a stray kitten in the snow, bundled it into his coat, and brought it home. Little did he know he had just met the muse that would determine the course of his life. Chandoha turned his lens on his new feline friend?which he named Loco?and was so inspired by the results that he started photographing kittens from a local shelter. These images marked the start of an extraordinary career that would span seven decades. Long before the Internet and #catsofinstagram, Chandoha was enrapturing the public with his fuzzy subjects. From advertisements to greetings cards, jigsaw puzzles to pet-food packaging, his images combined a genuine affection for the creatures, a strong work ethic, and flawless technique. Chandoha’s trademark glamorous lighting, which made each cat’s fur stand out in sharp relief, would define the visual vocabulary of animal portraiture for generations and inspire such masters as Andy Warhol, who took cues from Chandoha’s charming portraits in his illustrated cat book. Cats leaps into the archives of this genre-defining artist, spanning color studio and environmental portraits, black-and-white street photography, images from vintage cat shows, tender pictures that combine his children with cats and more. This is a fitting tribute not just to these beguiling creatures but also to a remarkable photographer who passed away in 2019 at the age of 98; and whose compassion can be felt in each and every frame.

Jana Ilková. Diary

Ilková pracuje so snapshotovou estetikou a často využíva priame bleskové svetlo, ktoré odhaľuje všetky chyby a nedostatky. Vo svojej tvorbe sa snaží o dokumentárnu, ba priam vedecky presnú reprodukciu videného. V kontraste jej autorského prístupu a výsledných veľkoformátových zväčšenín vzniká znepokojivý pocit zo všednosti.

London Tube Stations 1924-1961

Charles Holden's designs for the London Underground from the mid-1920s to the outbreak of World War II represent a high point of transport architecture and Modernist design in Britain. His collaboration with Frank Pick, the Chief Executive of London Transport, brought about a marriage of form and function still celebrated today. Pick used the term 'Medieval Modernism' to describe their work on the underground system, comparing the task to the construction of a great cathedral. London Tube Stations 1924 - 1961 catalogues and showcases every surviving station from this innovative period. These beautiful buildings, simultaneously historic and futuristic, have been meticulously documented by architectural photographer Philip Butler. Annotated with station-by-station overviews by writer and historian Joshua Abbott, the book provides an indispensable guide to the network's Modernist gems. All the key stations have a double page spread, with a primary exterior photograph alongside supporting images. A broader historical introduction, illustrated with archival images from the London Transport Museum, gives historical context, while a closing chapter lists the demolished examples alongside further period images. These stations, as famed architectural historian Nicholas Pevsner later noted, would "pave the way for the twentieth-century style in England".

Richard Avedon - Relationships

How the legendary portraitist forged enduring relationships with his sitters, from Marilyn Monroe to Truman Capote Over the course of his six-decade-long career, photographer Richard Avedon worked with a tremendous range of portrait subjects: models, actors, ballet dancers, celebrities, civil rights activists, heads of state, inventors, musicians, visual artists and writers. He also frequently returned to the same subjects. Published for an exhibition at Palazzo Reale, Richard Avedon: Relationships spotlights these recurring figures: painter Jasper Johns in 1965 and 1976; novelist Carson McCullers in 1956 and 1958; the Beatles, Andy Warhol, Marilyn Monroe and Allen Ginsberg in 1963 and 1970. Perhaps his most intimate and enduring photographic relationship occurred with his friend and collaborator Truman Capote. Selected from the extensive Avedon collection at the Center for Creative Photography by curator Rebecca A. Senf, this catalog presents 100 fashion and portrait photographs that emphasize the role of relationship-building in Avedon’s practice. His attunement to his individual subjects?as well as his crystalline technical proficiency?enabled him to create portraits radiant with vivid life.

Freedom

Celebrating the dynamic and enduring collaboration between two icons of fashion and photography In the 1970s, despite not yet knowing each other, Azzedine Alaia and Arthur Elgort were responding to a similar current within the cultural landscape. Alaia realized that fashion had changed; its locus had shifted from the salons to the streets. Elgort, then a young photographer for American Vogue, was in the process of establishing a new vision for photography that also moved outdoors, away from the studio; his “snapshots'' ushered in a more informal photographic style marked by its spontaneity. Both actively contributed to popularizing the mobile, assertive and independent woman within fashion. This book commemorates the long collaboration between Ala?a and Elgort. Many of the images produced by the duo are considered classics, emblematic of the late 20th century. This volume reproduces approximately 200 of these dynamic, playful photographs, many of which feature Ala?a himself. Arthur Elgort (born 1940) studied painting at Hunter College but quickly transitioned to photography. In his long career he has worked on many major advertising campaigns, including for Chanel, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent, shot countless fashion spreads and published several books, including Personal Fashion (1983), The Swan Prince (1987), Models Manual (1993), Ballet Camera Crazy (2004), The Big Picture (2014), Jazz (2018) and I Love…. (2019). Azzedine Alaia (1935–2017) was a Tunisian couturier and shoe designer. He produced his first ready-to-wear collection in 1980. When his clothes were first sold at Bergdorf Goodman in 1982, it was considered so momentous that the New York Times later listed it as among the landmark events that altered the city’s cultural landscape. Among his devotees were Grace Jones (who wore several of his creations in A View to a Kill), Tina Turner, Raquel Welch, Madonna, Janet Jackson and Naomi Campbell.

AAM AASTHA: Indian Devotions

A festival of Indian folk rituals and costumes bursting with colour, captured by renowned photographer Charles Freger, the creator of a distinctive and powerful new genre of portrait photography. Internationally renowned photographer Charles Freger continues to explore global traditions and cultures, by celebrating the powerful visual aspects of Indian folk culture and religious ritual. India is the home to a myriad of local traditions, legends and religions, each with their own festivals, rites and rituals. Celebrations burst with vivid colours and often wildly exuberant costumes, some representing gods and goddesses, others legendary heroes from Sanskrit epics such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. In Charles Freger's photographs, those who honour local cultural traditions are represented in single or group portraits, represented against carefully chosen landscapes and backdrops, from the heart of festivals and celebrations. Freger's unmistakable style of portraiture allows us to admire the complexity of their adornments - masks and headdresses, costumes and body paint - and to consider the abundance of imagination that expresses India's countless stories and characters, both human and divine. This spectacular gathering of warrior figures, deities, musicians, tigers, mahouts, epic characters and their avatars is accompanied by texts setting the huge variety of eclectic costumes in context, and describing the local festivals and rituals. This compelling sequence of new portraits will enthral those with an interest in folk traditions, as well as the followers of this internationally acclaimed photographer.

Kids of Cosplay

In this bold, surreal photographic celebration of the fantastical beauty of cosplay, 70 cosplayers leave behind their everyday existence and become heroes for a day. Whether it is becoming a fictional character or presenting the 'you' the world sees, the craft of cosplay is everywhere. A powerful expression of individuality and diversity, cosplay is a global phenomenon that allows a large number of diverse individuals to join together in one single chaotic but inclusive community. Cosplay allows anyone to become a hero for a day. After attending a cosplay convention in 2018, photographer Thurstan Redding became captivated by cosplay as a subject matter and embarked on a three-year photographic project to portray cosplay in a way it had never been seen before. In this bold and surprising volume, he captures the transfixing world of cosplay. Brought to life through the presentation of 70 cosplayers in the most unassuming of locations, this exceptional book highlights how creativity can thrive in the most mundane realities: Spider-Man is illuminated by the open fridge in the kitchen, three Alices wait at a bus stop in a desolate Wonderland, Resistance Pilot plays dead on the gravel driveway of a suburban housing estate. Supplemented by commentary from the cosplayers themselves, together with behind-the-scenes pages from Thurstan's personal diary, Kids of Cosplay is 'a celebration of ... fandom and allows a glimpse into the world where people are united by their celebration of an art which transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary' (The Independent). A foreword by fashion powerhouse Katie Grand, an essay by writer and performer Tom Rasmussen, who discusses the social and cultural context of cosplay, and an illuminating interview with Redding by noted fashion writer Sara McAlpine complete this compelling volume. Sometimes, all it takes is to scratch the surface of our realities to reveal the fantasy that lies beneath.
