The Naked Nude

The representation of the nude in art remained for many centuries a victory of fiction over fact. Beautiful, handsome, flawless - its great success was to distance the unclothed body from any uncomfortably explicit taint of sexuality, eroticism or imperfection. In this newly updated study, Frances Borzello contrasts the civilized, sanitized, perfected nude of Kenneth Clark's classic, The Nude: A Study in Ideal Form (1956), with today's depictions: raw, uncomfortable, both disturbing and intriguing. Grittier and more subtle, depicting variously gendered bodies, the new nude asks awkward questions and behaves provocatively. It is a very naked nude, created to deal with the issues and contradictions that surround the body in our time.
Borzello explores the role of the nude in twentieth- and twenty-first-century art, looking at the work of a wide range of international artists creating contemporary nudes. Her fascinating text is complemented by a profusion of well-chosen, unusual and beautifully reproduced illustrations. The story begins with a tale of life, death and resurrection - an investigation into how and why the nude has survived and flourished in an art world that prematurely announced its demise. Vivian Maier
A full-career retrospective on the work of Vivian Maier, bringing together a selection of key works from throughout her life and career. When Vivian Maier's archive was discovered in Chicago in 2007, the photography community gained an immense and singular talent. Maier lived in relative obscurity until her death in 2009, but is now the subject of films and books, and recognized as one of the great American photographers of the 20th century. Born in New York in 1926, she worked as a nanny in New York and Chicago for much of her adult life. It was during her years as a nanny that she took many of the photographs that have made her posthumously famous. Maier's incredible body of work consists of more than 150,000 photographic images, Super 8 and 16 mm films, various recordings and a multitude of undeveloped films.
Working primarily as a street photographer, Maier's work has been compared with such luminaries as Helen Levitt, Robert Frank, Diane Arbus and Joel Meyerowitz. Drawing on previously unpublished archives and recent scientific analyses, this retrospective sheds new light on Maier's work. With texts by Anne Morin and Christa Blumlinger, this thorough look at Maier's entire archive is organized thematically in sections that cover self-portraits, the street, portraits, gestures, cinematography, children, colour work and forms. A valuable addition to the continuing assessment of Maier's work, this book is a one-volume compendium of her most enduring images.

Bernd & Hilla Becher

Harry Benson began photographing Paul McCartney in 1964, when the Beatles took America by storm, toured the world, and made their movie debut with A Hard Day’s Night. The legendary photojournalist was on hand to document it all. Alfred Wertheimer. Elvis and the Birth of Rock and Roll
"Elvis who?" was photographer Alfred Wertheimer's response when, in early 1956, an RCA Victor publicist asked him to photograph an up-and-coming crooner from Memphis. Little did Wertheimer know that this would be the job of his life: just 21 years old, Elvis Presley was-as we now know-about to become a legend.
Trailing Presley like a shadow, Wertheimer took nearly 3,000 photographs of Presley that year, creating a penetrating portrait of a man poised on the brink of superstardom. Extraordinary in its intimacy and unparalleled in its scope, Wertheimer's Elvis project immortalized a young man in the very process of making history.

Pavel Šešulka - Fotografie
Fotografické dílo Pavla Šešulky (*1945) vznikalo pouhé jedno desetiletí – v osmdesátých letech minulého století. Fotografii se sice věnoval dočasně, avšak s velkým nasazením, které je pro něj typické. S podobnou vášní byl v mládí profesionálním zpěvákem populárních písní, později rybářem, akvaristou, amatérským malířem a řezbářem. Publikace podává svědectví o jeho fotografické tvorbě, kterou v úvodní eseji Petr Klimpl zasazuje jak do životního rámce autora, tak do dobového kontextu fotografie.
Vedle začátečnických prací Pavla Šešulky přináší kniha ukázky z cyklu Lidé z města (před r. 1986), městské momentky, které se svým pojetím vymykají obvyklému frontálnímu snímání a vyjadřují osamělost městského člověka mezi jinými lidmi. Silně expresivní soubor z prostředí diagnostického ústavu mládeže s názvem Pasťák (před r. 1987) působivě dokládá dobovou iluzi komunistického režimu o výchově, resp. „převýchově“. Vrchol Šešulkovy fotografické tvorby tvoří soubor Zátiší (před r. 1990). Tento žánr, bohatě rozvinutý v klasické malbě, tradičně symbolizuje marnost, pomíjivost – vanitas, a v české fotografii je silně zastoupen v dílech Josefa Sudka a Jana Svobody. Pavel Šešulka ve svém skromném ateliéru sestavoval z běžně dostupných materiálů kompozice se symbolickými obsahy, které fotografoval, a vytvářel tak experimentální obrazy přesahující realistické zobrazování směrem k fantazijním světům.
V osmdesátých letech minulého století byly fotografie Pavla Šešulky opakovaně vysoce hodnoceny na dobových přehlídkách amatérské fotografie a publikovány ve fotografických časopisech. Jsou uloženy ve sbírce Moravské galerie v Brně a ve sbírce Svazu českých fotografů v Praze.
