Body

The definitive survey of contemporary photography of the human body. The body remains a battleground. Politicized, conceptualized and increasingly shared, our often-paradoxical relationship with the human form is nothing new, but finds itself heightened in the digitised, virtualised era of the 'post-industrial' body. No longer a tool but a work-in-progress, our bodily expectations bound from fantasy to reality, beauty to tyranny, art to commerce and curiosity to obsession, leaving us dreaming of other bodies and alternate lives. Surveying a range of over 360 photographic re-presentations from the worlds of art, fashion, scientific and vernacular photography - including the work of Nobuyoshi Araki, Bettina Rheims, Lauren Greenfield, Viviane Sassen, Cindy Sherman, Wolfgang Tillmans, Daido Moriyama, Sally Mann, Pieter Hugo and Juergen Teller, Solve Sundsbo and Daniel Sannwald - Body: The Photobook explores what our imaging of the human form, and the ways in which those images have been used and shared, might reflect of our relationship to the body. Supporting the broad range of photography is an essay by the psychologist Professor David Sander, who discusses the neurological representation of our own bodies.

Georgia O'Keeffe, Photographer

A groundbreaking introduction to the photographic work of an iconic modern artist The pathbreaking artist Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) is revered for her iconic paintings of flowers, skyscrapers, animal skulls, and Southwestern landscapes. Her photographic work, however, has not been explored in depth until now. After the death of her husband, the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, in 1946, photography indeed became an important part of O'Keeffe's artistic production. She trained alongside the photographer Todd Webb, revisiting subjects that she had painted years before-landforms of the Southwest, the black door in her courtyard, the road outside her window, and flowers. O'Keeffe's carefully composed photographs are not studies of detail or decisive moments; rather, they focus on the arrangement of forms. This is the first major investigation of O'Keeffe's photography and traces the artist's thirty-year exploration of the medium, including a complete catalogue of her photographic work. Essays by leading scholars address O'Keeffe's photographic approach and style and situate photography within the artist's overall practice. This richly illustrated volume significantly broadens our understanding of one of the most innovative artists of the twentieth century.

Helmut Newton. Legacy

Virtually unparalleled in scope and spanning more than five decades, the photography of visionary Helmut Newton (1920-2004) reached millions through publication in magazines like Vogue and Elle. His oeuvre transcended genres, bringing elegance, style, and voyeurism to fashion, portrait, and glamour photography through a body of work that remains as inimitable as it is unrivaled. Having mastered the art of fashion photography early in his career, Newton's shoots invariably went beyond standard practice, blurring the lines between reality and illusion. Newton's clear aesthetic pervades all areas of his work, particularly fashion, portraiture, and nude photography. Women take center stage - with subjects such as Catherine Deneuve, Liz Taylor, and Charlotte Rampling. Moving beyond traditional narrative approaches, Newton's fashion photography is imbued not only with luxurious elegance and subtle seduction, but also cultural references and a surprising sense of humor. During the 1990s, Newton shot for the German, American, Italian, French, and Russian editions of Vogue, primarily in and around Monte Carlo where he was living from 1981 onwards. Transforming locations like his own garage into starkly contrasting or particularly minimalist theatrical stages, Newton would often portray the eccentric lives of the beautiful and rich, full of eroticism and elegance, in unconventional scenarios. He made use of and simultaneously questioned visual cliches, at times tinged with self-irony or mockery, but always full of empathy. Helmut Newton. Legacy, which accompanies an international exhibition tour of Newton's work, showcases highlights from one of the most published bodies of work in photography, including numerous rediscovered images. A prolific image maker and genuine visionary, this book celebrates Newton's lasting influence on modern photography and visual art to this day. The exhibition HELMUT NEWTON. LEGACY will be on view at the Helmut Newton Foundation, Jebensstrasse 2, 10623 Berlin from October 31, 2021 to May 22, 2022.

David Lynch :Digital Nudes

The latest volume of the polymathic filmmaker's protean nude portraiture Though he is best known as a writer and director, David Lynch has long been dedicated to photography. This volume is the second installment of Lynch's series of photographic explorations of the female figure. Digital Nudes brings together a corpus of previously unpublished digital images in line with the aesthetics of the first volume's analog photographs, while experimenting with the possibilities offered by digital technology. Kaleidoscopic visions of legs, arms or inscrutable landscapes of soft skin, chiaroscuro portraits where the stark lighting cuts across his subjects as cleanly as a knife, images of varnished nails and lacquered mouths all appear--the American filmmaker's photography embodies a style that can only be described as "Lynchian." The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain presents this collection of images that combine the surreal and the sensual to create new, nearly uncanny interpretations of feminine beauty. David Lynch (born 1946) is the enigmatic mastermind behind some of the strangest and most beloved contemporary classics in cinema and television. His filmography includes Eraserhead (1977), Dune (1984), Blue Velvet (1986), Mulholland Drive (2001) and the cult television program Twin Peaks (1990-91), which he co-created with producer Mark Frost. He has received numerous prestigious accolades, including the Golden Lion lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival in 2007. Lynch primarily lives and works in Los Angeles.

American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams

For fifty years, Robert Adams has made compelling, provocative, and highly influential photographs that show us the wonder and fragility of the American landscape, its inherent beauty, and the inadequacy of our response to it. American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams examines Adams's reverential act of looking at the world around him and the almost palpable silence of his photographs. It includes works that capture the sense of peace and harmony that the beauty of nature can instill in us, created through what Adams calls "the silence of light" of the American West (as seen on the prairie, in the woods, and by the ocean), as well as pictures that question our moral silence to the desecration of that beauty by consumerism, industrialization, and lack of environmental stewardship. The book features some 175 works from Adams's most important projects and includes pictures of suburban sprawl, strip malls, highways, homes, and stores, as well as rivers and skies, the prairie and the ocean. While Adams's photographs lament the ravages that have been inflicted on the land, they also pay homage to what remains.

Charles Bridge

The Grand Tour. The Golden Age of Travel

Global travel can be a wearying business: mass tourism, overcrowded planes, chaotic airports, heightened security, cookie-cutter hotel chains, well-worn tourist trails. Finding even a sliver of adventure can sometimes feel impossible. But take heart: for all of us with an unfulfilled spirit of wanderlust, The Golden Age of Travel evokes an era when traveling the world was a thrilling new possibility for those with the resources, time, imagination, and daring. This richly illustrated volume charts the travel heyday of 1869 to 1939. Bedecked with ephemera and precious turn-of-the-century photochroms, it follows six classic tours favored by Western adventurers in the prewar era, including such famous traveler-writers as Charles Dickens, Jules Verne, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Mark Twain, and Goethe. From the Grand Tour of Europe, a traditional rite of passage for young English aristocrats, to the Far East, barely touched by Western influence, to the famous Trans-Siberian Railway, we follow each journey through its itinerant stops and various modes of transport: trains, boats, cars, planes, horses, donkeys, and camels. With pages brimming with archival travel posters, guides, tickets, leaflets, brochures, menus, and luggage stickers, the book evokes all the romance, elegance, not to mention the sheer sense of novelty, that enthralled these golden-age passengers. Through decadent new cities, or wild, rugged terrains, this is your passport to a long-lost epoch of adventure and wide-eyed wonder at the world.
