John Sallis vo svojej knihe Významy krajiny, ktorá sa venuje stvárneniu krajiny v maliarstve, vychádza z tvrdenia, že zem je základným elementom, ktorý poskytuje ľuďom i ostatným živým bytostiam útočisko a čitateľom predkladá pôsobivé syntetické dielo. Významy krajiny ponúkajú tri druhy analýz, ktoré sú síce odlišné, ale priebežne sa neustále prelínajú.
