Cello

'Just as a cello's voice is divided across four strings, each with its own colour and character, this is a journey in four parts, in search of four players and their instruments...' In Cello, Kate Kennedy weaves together the lives of four remarkable cellists who suffered various forms of persecution, injury and misfortune. The Hungarian Jewish cellist and composer Pál Hermann managed to keep one step ahead of the Gestapo for much of the Second World War but was eventually captured and murdered. Lise Cristiani, the first female professional cello soloist, undertook an epic - and ultimately fatal - concert tour of Siberia in the 1850s, taking with her one of the world's greatest Stradivari cellos. Anita Lasker-Wallfisch was incarcerated in both Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen camps, only surviving because she was the cellist in the Auschwitz-Birkenau women's orchestra. Amedeo Baldovino of the Trieste Piano Trio was forced to jump from a burning ship with his 'Mara' Stradivari, losing the cello, and nearly losing his own life when the boat was shipwrecked near Buenos Aires. Counterpointing the themes raised by these extraordinary stories are a sequence of interludes that draw together the author's reflections on the nature and history of the cello, and her many interviews and encounters with contemporary cellists. Kate Kennedy's own relationship with the cello is a complicated one. As a teenager, she suffered an injury to her arm that imposed severe limitations on her career as a performer on the instrument that was her first love. She realised that, in order to start to understand what the cello meant to her, she needed to find out what the cello - and, crucially, the absence of the cello - had meant to some other cellists, past and present. Kate Kennedy has written an eloquent and multitextured homage to this warmest of stringed instruments - part quest narrative, part detective story, part philosophical meditation.

Assemble

The long-awaited monograph on the Turner Prize-winning multidisciplinary architecture collective Assemble, gathering more than a decade of their groundbreaking collaborative work. Assemble are not your usual architects. They work as a collective, where everything from which projects to take on to who clears away lunch is decided by the group. Formed in 2010 to conceive, build and run a temporary cinema on the site of a disused petrol station, they went on to design the celebrated Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art in London and the workshops at Atelier Luma in Arles, alongside numerous community projects such as playgrounds and public spaces. The fact that in 2015 they scooped the prestigious Turner Prize - more often given to mid-career artists - along the way gives some indication of the nature of their surprising, collaborative work and its cultural impact. This book is the result of extensive conversations between the group and architecture critic Aaron Betsky, bringing together all of their significant projects to date through photographs, drawings and their own words.

Viktor Kolář. Ostrava 1963-2024

"I know what I'm not: definitely I'm not a documentarist” is how photographer Viktor Kolář defended himself in one interview from having his work assigned to a genre in which he took no interest. And this same stance is revealed again in the new book of photographs that he prepared for KANT Publishers following the success of his now hard-to-find volumes Ostrava (2010) and Canada 1968-1973 (2013). Kolář's shots may speak with unusual eloquence about a specific place and its changes over time, yet they do so only indirectly. In reality, they concentrate on those moments of sudden and unique, sometimes even improbable "encounters” - precisely in the sense that this word was used by the Surrealists. These aesthetically powerful black-and-white photographs miss nothing of the indelible characteristics of Ostrava, a city of mining and industry, yet the resulting portrait of the city is imaginary, not a realistic description. As such, in the accompanying essays by Manuel Anceau, Jan Balabán, Martin Dostál and Jaromír Typlt, Viktor Kolář is discussed not only as a photographer but equally as a poet, using images in place of words.

Doprovodné texty samotné Evy Eisler osvětlují kontexty vzniku jednotlivých děl a odhalují osobní rovinu přístupu k vlastní tvorbě.

The V&A Book of Colour in Design

A beautifully presented survey of design and the applied arts, explored not by use, material, form or date - but by colour The V&A Book of Colour in Design is attractively simple: a celebration and exploration of colour, as revealed through objects in the world-class collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Structured by colour, it offers fascinating insights into the choices made by designers and makers from across the world and throughout history. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction that considers the history, symbolism, and use of an individual colour. Objects - from items of jewelry, textiles, glassware and ceramics to furniture and more - are reproduced in a visual selection that explores the varied hues of every colour. However different objects within each section may be in their detail and meaning, they are united by their common colour, revealing surprising connections between them. Throughout, narrative captions bring together disparate items from across the V&A's collection to explore the universal significance of colour in art and design. Beautifully designed, this highly visual, colour-led survey of design and the applied arts is a compelling sourcebook with broad appeal for anyone interested or involved in all aspects of visual culture.

A *Co-* Program for Graphic Design

Three new graphic design courses, detailed in this volume, comprise a critical companion to Reinfurt's bestselling DIY textbook, A *New* Program for Graphic Design This volume expands David Reinfurt's uniquely pragmatic and experimental approach to pedagogy into a collaborative project that weaves together a multiplicity of voices to present a polyphonic approach to design history and teaching. Three of Reinfurt's new Princeton University graphic design courses-C-i-r-c-u-l-a-t-i-o-n, M-u-l-t-p-l-i-c-i-t-y and R-e-s-e-a-r-c-h-developed explicitly in the context of remote teaching and in light of urgent realignments around whose stories get told and who does the telling, are presented in this follow-up to A *New* Program for Graphic Design (Inventory Press/D.A.P., 2018). C-i-r-c-u-l-a-t-i-o-n examines the distribution networks for graphic design including electronic and conventional means. M-u-l-t-p-l-i-c-i-t-y, taught with mathematics professor Philip Ording, explores graphic design from the perspective of topology and topology through the practice of graphic design. R-e-s-e-a-r-c-h is an advanced graphic design class which cultivates an exploratory and expansive design process and investigates what the term ""design research"" has meant at different points in design history. From these separate angles comes a collaborative and cooperative way of telling and teaching design history, taking on subjects from the Detroit Printing Co-op, Corita Kent and Charles and Ray Eames, to Giuseppe Peano, Marshall McLuhan, Sylvia Harris and Virgil Abloh. Through a series of in-depth historical case studies and assignments that progressively build in complexity, the book serves as a practical guide to visually understanding the history-and shaping the future-of our designed world. David Reinfurt is an independent graphic designer and writer based in New York City. He worked as an interaction designer at IDEO from 1995 to 1997, where he was the lead designer for the MTA Metrocard vending machine interface. In 2000, Reinfurt formed the graphic design practice O-R-G inc., followed by Dexter Sinister in 2006 and the Serving Library in 2012. He has taught at Princeton University since 2010.

A všude kolem temná krása rozkladu. Jedno jestli z pozůstatků věcí a těl nebo rozvrácených dějin. Tehdy, stejně jako dnes.

Graphic Design. 1890-Today

A vivid history of 150 years of graphic design Through the turbulent events of the last century-and-a-half, graphic design—with its vivid, neat synthesis of image and idea—has distilled the spirit of each age. It surrounds us every minute of the day, from minimalist packaging to colorful adverts, environmental graphics to sleek interfaces: graphic design is as much about reflecting society’s aspirations and values as it is about transmitting information. Now published as part of our popular Basic Art series, this vibrant compendium lays out the evolution of graphic design from its inception in the 1890s up until the present day. Using his sweeping knowledge of the field, author Jens Müller has curated hundreds of examples from across the globe, arranged by decade. Each chapter also includes thumbnails of significant movements and influential publications, plus concise biographies of design masterminds like Massimo Vignelli (New York subway wayfinding), Otl Aicher (Lufthansa identity), Paula Scher (Citibank identity), Milton Glaser (I Love New York), Louise Fili (packaging), and Stefan Sagmeister (handwritten posters). This succinct but authoritative collection reflects on the development of a creative field that is constantly changing and challenging itself. The design classics Müller has curated act as coordinates, helping to trace the incontrovertible influence of graphic design on our daily lives. It’s both a handy primer and an informed exploration of how graphic design shapes our choices, from the products we buy and the media we consume, to how we behave and think of ourselves.

Bruce Weber. My Education

Reflections on a Big Life in Photography A Deep Dive into Bruce Weber’s Photographic Journey My Education provides a revealing look into the life, work and creative journey of one of our era’s preeminent image-makers, Bruce Weber. Featuring over 500 photographs, including a collection of his most iconic images as well as previously unpublished and lesser-known photographs, the volume provides a profound exploration of his oeuvre. Rather than following a simple chronological order, it is organized thematically, reflecting how key ideas like family, creativity, physicality, humanism, sexuality, and expression have fueled Weber’s lifelong curiosity. This approach offers an unparalleled view of his photographic evolution. The book showcases the fashion photography and portraiture Weber is renowned for, unforgettable images for major fashion magazines, including Vogue, GQ, W Magazine, and Vanity Fair. It also highlights rare editorial selections and previously unseen reportage photographs. Beyond the realm of fashion, Weber has immortalized some of the most influential cultural and political figures of our time. From Anselm Kiefer to Kim Kardashian, Louise Bourgeois to Leonardo DiCaprio—Weber’s unique ability to capture the essence of each subject, whether in intimate portraits or dynamic editorial shots, has made him one of the most revered image-makers of his generation. This volume is more than just a visual journey—it’s a personal tribute to the spirit of collaboration, mutual inspiration, and the pursuit of creative expression. Punctuated by a collection of personal narratives and texts by Charles Bukowski, Rupert Brooke, John Steinbeck and many others, this volume celebrates the teachers, friends, collaborators and influences that shaped Bruce Weber’s singularly impactful approach to photography and filmmaking. In deeply personal anecdotes about close collaborators like Grace Coddington, Dennis Freedman or Stella Tennant, Weber reminisces about bonds that go deeper than mere professional collaboration.

Logo Beginnings. Logo Modernism. 45th Ed.

A 100-year history of the origins and evolution of the trademark By the late 19th century, trademarks began to replace traditional emblems, like coats of arms, as identifying symbols for companies. At first, logos tended to be figurative, but over time they morphed into the abstract marks that we see everywhere today. Yet many iconic brands—like Rolex, BMW, Louis Vuitton, and the New York Yankees—still use logos designed 100 years ago. Bringing together two previous volumes—Logo Beginnings and Logo Modernism—into one compendium, design expert Jens Müller (dubbed “the logo detective” by Wired magazine) has trawled historical trademark archives and design publications to unearth 1000s of logos from as far back as 1870, including many forgotten designs and early versions of today’s brand identifiers. For clarity and ease of reference, both the Beginnings and Modernism sections are divided into categories (like Pictorial, Form, Effect, and Typographic) with each category further subdivided by basic design elements, like circle, line, alphabet, overlay, dots and squares. For context, in addition to the author’s essay on the history of the trademark, R. Roger Remington writes on modernism in graphic design, plus there are profiles of eight seminal designers—including Paul Rand, Yusaku Kamekura, and Anton Stankowski. Covering everything from media outfits to retail giants, airlines to art galleries, this is an invaluable resource for graphic designers, advertisers, and branding experts. It will also delight fans of cultural and corporate history, and anyone fascinated by the persuasive power of image and form.
