Comet

Comet presents the amazing story of the Rosetta space probe and its interstellar voyage to the comet Tchoury. Its mission - to find clues to the origins of our solar system and the emergence of life on Earth. Following a ten-year voyage and a journey spanning millions of kilometres through our Solar System, the Rosetta entered the comet's orbit. Its lander, Philae - a miniature science laboratory - landed directly on Tchoury's surface and was able to take the photographs presented here. This triumph of scientific endeavour brought back a raft of incredible new photographs, the best of which are featured here. The book is built around the various phases in Rosetta's journey: leaving Earth, breaching its atmosphere and watching the lights of home recede; skirting the Moon and coming close to Mars; plunging into the cosmos' starry void and approaching the comet; and, finally, landing on Tchoury. The photographs are accompanied by a text that reflects on the objectives of the mission and the accomplishment of such a technological feat for humanity. Detailed captions provide the reader with accessible scientific information, enabling them to get to the heart of the subject.

Jacopo Benassi: Bologna Portraits

Bologna Portraits is the portrait of one of the most charming and least well-known Italian cities portrayed through the faces of the people who live there today. It started during the artist's many stays in the town. Discovering Bologna little by little, Jacopo Benassi took pictures, like a sort of notebook, of the faces of the most interesting people he met during his time there. After a few months he already had a large portfolio of people which, like in a mosaic, built a bigger portrait of the whole city today. Bologna is probably the best-kept secret of the Italian cities with a great past. Large-scale tourism has never affected it, but in recent years it has been discovered by a growing group of sophisticated travellers passionate about art, culture, cinema and food. The portraits are a mix of young artists, writers, minor and great musicians, leading businessmen, famous bar tenders, tailors, professors at the local university (the oldest in the Western world), personalities and international artists such as Nino Migliori and Luigi Ontani. All of them born or living in Bologna. The whole book is a study of real faces that are able to be meaningful and to tell a story, and recall a tradition like the study of faces by Pier Paolo Pasolini in some of his films, or Andy Warhol's Screen Tests. But at the same time, they recall a masterpiece like Un Paese, the book produced by Paul Strand and Cesare Zavattini. The book includes a text by art critic Antonio Grulli.

Seeing Science

Seeing Science offers an insightful and reader-friendly collection of essays and pictures about photography's role in visualizing science and building human knowledge--from micro to macro levels and everything in between. Photography and science have long been intertwined, helping to shape the way we look at the world. Scientists use photography as a way to gather information, explore, and learn, but just as important, photography is also used to promote scientific advances and has long served as an interface between the sciences and the public. Our understanding of outer space depends on images sent to Earth from the Hubble Space Telescope, just as our understanding of our own bodies depends on X-rays. Images make visible what lies beyond human perception. Science is less an edifice of facts than a process of discovery and inquiry. In this way, it is not dissimilar to art; artists have engaged with some of the same scientific principles, using photography to imagine the world differently and present us with new experiences and ways of seeing. This volume presents both perspectives exploring how science is made perceptible, featuring over three hundred images and sixty short texts. Together they engage readers in a timely exploration of the extent to which our knowledge is formed and transformed through our interactions with photographic imagery.

Mailer, MoonFire, 50yrs

On July 20, 1969, science fiction became reality. Revisit the momentous moon landing in the 50thanniversary editionof Norman Mailer’s classic book on the Apollo 11 mission. This volume includes hundreds of imagessourced from the NASA vaults, magazine archives, and private collections, documenting the lead up to, aftermath, and breathtaking moments of that giant leap for mankind. It has been called the single most historic event of the 20th century: On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collinsmet John F. Kennedy’s call for a manned Moon landing by the end of the 1960s. A decade of tests and training, a staff of 400,000 engineers and scientists, a budget of billions, and the most powerful rocket ever launched all combined in an unprecedented event watched by millions the world over. And no one captured the men, the mood, and the machinery like Norman Mailer. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century, Norman Mailerwas hired byLIFEmagazine in 1969 to cover the Moon shot. He enhanced his reportage in the brilliantly crafted book, Of a Fire on the Moon, which is excerpted here. Equally adept at examiningthe science of space travel and the psychology of the people involved—from Saturn V rocket engineer Wernher von Braun to the crucial NASA support staff to the three astronauts—Mailer provides provocative and trenchant insights into this epoch-making event. Illustrating this volume are hundreds of photographsand maps from the NASA vaults, magazine archives, and private collections. These images document the development of the agency and the mission, life inside the command module and on the Moon’s surface, and the world’s jubilant reaction to the landing. This 50-year anniversary editionincludes captions by leading Apollo 11 expertsthat explain the history and science behind the images, citing the mission log, publications of the day, and postflight astronaut interviews; while an evocative introduction by Colum McCanncelebrates Mailer’s incomparable skill at transforming “the science of space... the weight of history... the breadth of mythology” into prose. The author Norman Mailer(1923–2007) was one of the 20th century’s greatest and most influential writers, as well as one of America’s most renowned and controversial literary figures. The best-selling author of a dozen novels and 20 works of nonfiction, he also wrote stage plays, screenplays, television miniseries, hundreds of essays, two books of poetry, and a collection of short stories. A two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, he lived in Brooklyn, New York, and Provincetown, Massachusetts. The contributing author Colum McCannis the author of eight books, including Let the Great World Spin. Volcanic 7 Summits

Only a handful of people have attempted to climb the "Volcanic Seven Summits" -the continents' tallest volcanoes. Adrian Rohnfelder, a photographer with a keen interest in volcanoes and adventure, has embarked on this extraordinary journey. Adrian Rohnfelder cycles high above the steaming rainforests in the Kilimanjaro massif, crosses the seething heat of the Atacama Desert in Chile, and climbs the summit of Orizaba under dramatic circumstances. He knows the no-man's-land of the Antarctic and the spectacularly-glaciated Mount Sidley, so remote that only a handful of people have ever seen it. Rohnfelder is the first travel and adventure photographer to climb the seven highest volcanoes across the Earth's seven continents. Since 2008, when the "firework virus" first struck him in Indonesia, he has remained mesmerized by these glowing giants. His goal is not the volcano summit itself, but the photographs that emerge all along the journey there. His images tell the full story of his spectacular trips, recording the unique splendor of each country he encounters. The result is a photography book that not only portrays the beauty and spectacle of volcanoes-the surface lava, the smoke, the intense heat, and colors-but also celebrates the rich beauty of our planet and its many peoples. Through these dramatic images, we see both the power of the natural world and the diversity of human cultures around the globe. And contrary to common conception, Rohnfelder also shows us that from fire to ice is often less than a stone's throw away.

Cestujte časem a prožijte příběhy od vynálezu fotografie, přes postavení Eiffelovky, potopení Titaniku, významné objevy až k událostem obou světových válek. Díky výjimečné spolupráci výtvarníka Jordana Lloyda a kurátora Wolfganga Wilda ožije před vašima očima doba téměř dvou století. A pohled do očí imigrantů, kteří do Spojených států přicházeli ze všech končin světa přes Ellis Island, nás zase přesvědčí o pravdivosti pojmu tavicí kotlík. Spolupracuje s řadou archivů a muzeí, měl výstavy v Londýně, Drážďanech a New Yorku.

Česká novinářská fotografie 1945-1989

Publikace mapuje proměny novinářské fotografie a nahlíží možnosti jejího uplatnění v české mediální krajině druhé poloviny 20. století.

Petr Zhoř Fotografie No.

Michala Janaty.

Lacná kniha Body (-50%)

The body remains a battleground. Politicized, conceptualized and increasingly shared, our often-paradoxical relationship with the human form is nothing new, but finds itself heightened in the digitised, virtualised era of the `post-industrial' body. No longer a tool but a work-in-progress, our bodily expectations bound from fantasy to reality, beauty to tyranny, art to commerce and curiosity to obsession, leaving us dreaming of other bodies and alternate lives. Surveying a range of over 360 photographic re-presentations from the worlds of art, fashion, scientific and vernacular photography - including the work of Nobuyoshi Araki, Bettina Rheims, Lauren Greenfield, Viviane Sassen, Cindy Sherman, Wolfgang Tillmans, Daido Moriyama, Sally Mann, Pieter Hugo and Juergen Teller, Solve Sundsbo and Daniel Sannwald - Body: The Photography Book explores what our imaging of the human form, and the ways in which those images have been used and shared, might reflect of our relationship to the body. Berenice Abbott

This handsome publication presents legendary American photographer Berenice Abbott's work in three categories: her portraits, photographs of the city and scientific photographs. The opening section presents Abbott's portraits of mold-breaking individuals who changed the world from the mid-1920s onward such as Djuna Barnes, the New Yorker's Janet Flanner, Jean Cocteau and James Joyce. The second part offers a dazzling portrait of New York which takes into account Abbott's relations with and her fascination for the work of Eugene Atget by including an introductory group of his photographs, which she printed from his negatives. The third and final section focuses on Abbott's scientific photographs, which she started to produce in the late 1940s. Berenice Abbott was undoubtedly one of the defining portraitists of New York. Shops, people, bridges, streets, interiors, famous buildings under construction seen from outside or from above (the same ones that are visible today from the highway that runs round Manhattan) together make up this portrait. Berenice Abbott (1891-1991) was born in Springfield, Ohio. She began her photography career in 1923, as Man Ray's darkroom assistant. Her work is collected in some of the most prestigious museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art.
