Egy vén kujon feljegyzései
Bukowski olyan író, akinél a választott műfaj szinte mellékes: versei tulajdonképpen rövid prózai írások, prózája színtiszta líra, frappáns dialógusai színműként is megállnák a helyüket. Ötvenéves koráig szinte kizárólag verseket írt, és első regényének csakis azért fogott neki, mert kiadója úgy ítélte meg, hogy ezt a műfajt nagyobb példányszámban lehet értékesíteni. Az ő biztatására Bukowski három hét alatt írta meg az 1971-ben megjelent Postát, amelynek sikere után további öt regényt publikált.
Ezt a képet némileg árnyalják az Egy vén kujon feljegyzései című kötetben összegyűjtött írások. Ezek ugyanis azt igazolják, hogy Bukowski már a Posta megírása előtt is kísérletezett a prózával. A feljegyzésekben - amely címválasztásával szándékosan utal Dosztojevszkijre, Bukowski kedvenc klasszikusára - számos olyan töredék olvasható, amelyek kisebb módosítással átkerültek első regényébe.
A kötet más írásaiban a hatvanas évek végének politikai eseményeire, társadalmi forrongásaira reagál, és ezekből is világosan kiolvasható az íróra jellemző kritikus távolságtartás a tömegektől. Bukowski egyáltalán nem lelkesedik a forradalmi mámorban tobzódó békeharcosokért, így lehetetlenné teszi, hogy a beatnemzedék képviselői közé soroljuk, bár a kötet egyik írása épp azt igazolja, hogy e nemzedék néhány jelesebb alkotójával szinte baráti viszonyban volt.
A Vén kujon feljegyzéseinek valamennyi írásában ott van már a későbbi Bukowski-regények és -novellák jellegzetesen nyers hangvétele, kíméletlensége és metsző humora.
