Callimachus: Select Longer Fragments
Few among the surviving Hellenistic poets can rival the fame of Callimachus of Cyrene (approximately 320–240 BCE). Active as a poet and scholar in Ptolemaic Alexandria, Callimachus associated his name with a new set of aesthetic principles that proved influential for such poets as Vergil, Horace, and Ovid. Even so, except for six Hymns and several epigrams, most of his work survives in fragments. Weil: Povídky
Sedmý svazek Spisů Jiřího Weila (SJW) je vyhrazen povídkové tvorbě. Obsahuje prózy, které autor (6. 8. 1900 – 13. 12. 1959) zveřejnil ve třech knihách – Barvy (1946), Mír s podtitulem Povídky z let 1938–1948 (1949) a Vězeň chillonský (1957), přinášející redukovanou podobu Míru. Doplňujeme je texty, jež zůstaly mimo tyto knižně vypravené soubory a byly zveřejněny pouze časopisecky či ve sbornících nebo v posmrtně vydaném výboru Weilových povídek Hodina pravdy, hodina zkoušky (usp. Jiří Opelík, 1966). V komentáři otiskujeme též krátké prózy z Weilovy písemné pozůstalosti, uložené v Literárním archivu Památníku národního písemnictví v Praze.
Tento svazek – s povídkami psanými od sklonku třicátých let do konce let padesátých – stojí v chronologicky koncipovaných třináctidílných Spisech zhruba uprostřed. Toto místo odpovídá vzniku próz v období mezi romány Moskva-hranice (1937, SJW 4), Makanna, otec divů (1945, sv. 6) a Život s hvězdou (1949, sv. 9), resp. mezi reportážemi Češi stavějí v zemi pětiletek (1937, in SJW 3) a sérií poválečných črt z Polska a Švýcarska z let 1946–1947 (in SJW 8), které za Weilova života sice nevyšly knižně, ale povídkovému žánru tvoří námětový protějšek. Genezí, časopiseckým a knižním zveřejněním představují povídky beletristický pandán k Weilově publicistice zařazené ve Spisech do svazku Stati a reportáže 1938–1959 (sv. 8). Můžeme se jen dohadovat, zda Weilův zájem o kratší prozaický žánr byl způsoben i stále se zužujícím životním a publikačním prostorem nejdříve během protektorátu (takto to podal i autor v krátkém úvodu k první knize povídek Barvy) a pak v zostřujících se politicko-společenských poměrech padesátých let, nebo zda povídky sloužily jako „přechodný“ žánr mezi publicistikou, reportážemi a romány.

This Element investigates the phenomenon of literary doodling?the making of playful verbal and visual creations by professional authors while engaged in another activity. The first part focuses on defining the form and structure of doodles, comparing and contrasting them with adjacent genres such as sketches, caricatures, and illustrations. The second part explores the modality of doodling, examining doodles through the lenses of spectrality, liminality, and play. Drawing on a wide range of theories and backed up with numerous close readings, the Element argues that doodles, despite their apparent triviality, provide valuable insights into the creative processes, authorial habits, and finished works of literary doodlers.
