Napoleon’s Plunder and the Theft of Veronese’s Feast
Napoleon's Plunder chronicles one of the most spectacular art appropriation campaigns in history and, in doing so, sheds new light on the complex origins of what was once called the Musee Napoleon, now known as the Louvre.
In 1796, four years after the founding of the First French Republic and only two days after his marriage to Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon Bonaparte left Paris to take command of his first campaign in Italy, aged only twenty-six. One year later, Napoleon's army was in Venice and his commissioners were determining which great Renaissance artworks to bring back to France. Among the paintings the French chose was The Wedding Feast at Cana by Paolo Veronese, a vast masterpiece that had hung in the refectory of San Giorgio Maggiore since it was painted in 1563.
Once pulled from the wall, the Venetian canvas crossed the Mediterranean packed among paintings commandeered from Venice and made its way by river and canal to Paris where Napoleon gathered his spoils of war - treasures from the cities of Rome, Milan, and later Berlin and Vienna. In 1801 the Veronese was placed on triumphant display in the Louvre, the former palace of the French kings, which had been transformed into a public museum that ostensibly belonged to the French people, but which also functioned as a monument to Napoleon's power.
Saltzman interweaves the stories of Napoleon's military campaigns, uncovering the treaties through which he obtained his loot, with the histories of the plundered works themselves, exploring how these masterpieces came into being. As much as a story of military might, this is an account of one of the most ambitious cultural projects ever conducted.

Edwin P. Hoyt, americký vojenský historik a novinář, sloužil u amerického letectva, v letech 1943–1945 pracoval v Úřadu pro válečné informace, později se věnoval žurnalistice a učil na univerzitě. V knize 1944?: Válka ve středním Tichomoří čtenáře zavádí do centra bojů amerického Tichomořského loďstva, které se odehrávaly při postupu Američanů přes Eniwetok, Kwajalein a Saipan, dobytí Guamu a Tinianu, až do června 1944, kdy se jim při invazi na Mariánské ostrovy daří prorazit japonský obranný perimetr ve středním Tichomoří.
Autor ukazuje bitvy z amerického i japonského pohledu. Kromě samotného popisu vývoje událostí přináší pohled za oponu rozhodování nejvyšších špiček amerického velení, včetně rozporů v názorech na co nejúčinnější postup středním Pacifikem ve směru k japonským ostrovům.

Dejiny Rimanov od založenia mesta V-VII
Titus Livius sa narodil v Pataviu, v mladosti študoval filozofiu a rétoriku, ktorú neskôr aj vyučoval. Po príchode do Ríma za vlády Augusta, prvého rímskeho cisára, sa upriamil na históriu a začal spisovať rímske dejiny od najstarších čias. V Ríme si našiel mnoho priateľov, ktorí ho v jeho zámere podporovali a spriatelil sa aj so samotným Augustom. Dejinám Rimanov od založenia mesta (Ad Urbe condita) venoval celú životnú energiu a pracoval na nich až do svojej smrti. Livius sa hneď od počiatku presadil medzi čitateľmi a poslucháčmi svojím štýlom a jeho dielo sa predčítalo na početných schôdzkach. Dejiny spisoval systematicky od najstarších čias až do svojej prítomnosti a do konca života stihol napísať 142 kníh, pričom posledná z nich končila udalosťami z roku 9 pred Kr.
Livius sa rozhodol dejiny spisovať pútavým spôsobom, a ako znalcovi rétoriky sa mu to podarilo. Snažil sa vžívať do historických udalostí a osobností a podávať o ich konaní čo najvýstižnejší popis, tak akoby ich oživoval a vdychoval im život, a svojím spisovateľským umením ich kriesil a robil nesmrteľnými. Liviove dejiny majú plynulý dej a autor ich spestroval rôznymi príbehmi o výnimočných skutkoch mnohých osobností.
Livius zhrnul do svojich Dejín všetky najvýznamnejšie udalosti najstaršej rímskej histórie až do jeho súčasnosti. Stal sa najvýznamnejším dejepiscom svojej doby a väčšina diel starších dejepiscov pre obľubu jeho Dejín upadla do zabudnutia. Z Liviovho diela neskôr čerpali mnohí ďalší spisovatelia. A hoci sa nezachovalo celé, dodnes je cenným zdrojom poznania najstaršej rímskej histórie.
Udalosťami roku 403 pred Kr začína piata kniha. Autor v nej popisuje obliehanie a dobytie Veií, ďalšie vojny v Etrúrii, prechod Galov do Itálie, bitky Rimanov s Galmi a dobytie Ríma.
V šiestej knihe sa Livius zaoberá obnovou Ríma, vojenskými výpravami proti Volscom a Aequom, vzburou Marca Manlia, odbojom a odpadnutím rímskych kolónií a spojencov, novými zákonmi o voľbe konzulov a o obmedzení držby ornej pôdy.
Siedma kniha sa zaoberá vznikom nových úradov, pretúry a edility, prvými divadelnými hrami v Ríme, ťažkými vojnami s Galmi a Grékmi, aktivitami Rimanov v Kampánii so snahou získať nad ňou zvrchovanú moc, počiatkami vyčerpávajúcej vojny so Samnitmi, a taktiež mnohými ďalšími vojnovými výpravami.
