The Vice President's Black Wife
Award-winning historian Amrita Chakrabarti Myers has recovered the riveting, troubling, and complicated story of Julia Ann Chinn (ca. 1779 – 1833), the enslaved wife of Richard Mentor Johnson, owner of Blue Spring Farm, veteran of the War of 1812, and US vice president under Martin Van Buren. Johnson never freed Chinn, but during his frequent absences from his estate, he delegated to her the management of his property, including Choctaw Academy, a boarding school for Indigenous men and boys on the grounds of the estate. This meant that Chinn, although enslaved herself, oversaw Blue Spring's slave labor force and had substantial control over economic, social, financial, and personal affairs within the couple's world. Chinn's relationship with Johnson was unlikely to have been consensual since she was never manumitted. What makes Chinn's life exceptional is the power that Johnson invested in her, the opportunities the couple's relationship afforded her and her daughters, and their community's tacit acceptance of the family—up to a point. When the family left their farm, they faced steep limits: pews at the rear of the church, burial in separate graveyards, exclusion from town dances, and more. Johnson's relationship with Chinn ruined his political career and Myers compellingly demonstrates that it wasn't interracial sex that led to his downfall but his refusal to keep it—and Julia Chinn—behind closed doors.

Less Than Victory
The first book of its kind, Less than Victory explores both the impact the Vietnam War had on American Catholics, and the impact of the nation's largest religious group upon its most controversial war. Through the 1960s, Roman Catholics made up one-quarter of the population, and were deeply involved in all aspects of war. In this book, Steven J. Brady argues that American Catholics introduced the moral, as opposed to the prudential, argument about the war earlier and more comprehensively than other groups. The Catholic debate on morality was three cornered: some saw the war as inherently immoral, others as morally obligatory, while others focused on the morality of the means – napalm, torture, and free-fire zones – that the US and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam were employing. These debates presaged greater Catholic involvement in war and peace issues, provoking a shift away from traditional ideas of a just war across American Catholic thinking and dialogue.

The Ultra Secret
In April 1940, when British cryptographers at Bletchley Park decrypted some German air force messages, Group Captain Frederick Winterbotham recognized the potential of such intelligence and established a secure system to handle it. Killing Monarchs
Rulers (and would-be rulers) have always faced the possibility of a violent death. Between the seventh and eighteenth centuries over 20% of all British and European monarchs suffered such a fate. The Battle of Pavia took place in northern Italy on 24 February 1525. Its outcome profoundly affected the course of European international relations for the rest of the sixteenth century. King Francis I of France led his forces at the battle and was captured amidst the greatest slaughter of French nobles in war since Agincourt. This book examines the early reigns of Francis, of his great rival Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, and a number of their contemporaries. Slovenské rehoľné sestry totiž prešli v čase komunizmu veľkou skúškou a niektoré za svoju vernosť zaplatili životom, či už priamo vo väzení, alebo na následky zlého zaobchádzania v ňom. Iné strávili vo väzení dlhé roky.
Slovenské rehoľníčky sa v najťažších 50. rokoch dokázali vzoprieť komunistickému režimu. Odmietli si zložiť svoje rehoľné rúcho, odmietali pracovať v cirkevne zasvätené sviatky a väčšinovo sa odmietli zúčastňovať na komunistických voľbách.
Svojou prítomnosťou vo väzniciach a v továrňach, v rôznych ústavoch a starobincoch bránili kultúru života v Česku a na Slovensku v najplnšom zmysle slova.
Ruský básnik Alexander Blok napísal v jednej eseji v roku 1910: „Devätnáste storočie nás donútilo zabudnúť na mená svätcov – dvadsiate storočie ich možno uvidí na vlastné oči.“ V príbehu slovenských rehoľníčok za komunizmu sa toto jeho proroctvo vrchovate naplnilo.
František Mikloško, (1947) je slovenský politik a publicista. Počas obdobia komunizmu patril medzi úzkych spolupracovníkov Vladimíra Jukla, Silvestra Krčméryho a biskupa Jána Korca. V marci 1988 bol zvolávateľom Sviečkovej manifestácie. Po roku 1989 bol prvým predsedom Slovenskej národnej rady a dlhoročným poslancom NR SR. Napísal knihy Nebudete ich môcť rozvrátiť: z osudov katolíckej cirkvi na Slovensku v rokoch 1943 - 89; Čas stretnutí: Reflexie ponovembrovej dobe; Desať spravodlivých: ľudia, knihy, dokumenty 1985 - 2010; Znamenia čias: slovenské súradnice 1982 - 2012.
sr. Iva Kúšiková SSpS., sa narodila 17. augusta 1962. Pochádza zo Žarnovice. Do Misijnej kongregácie služobníc Ducha Svätého vstúpila tajne už ako stavebná inžinierka v r. 1986 s túžbou stavať nemocnice, školy, ihriská v krajinách tretieho sveta. Študovala kresťanské masmédia na Univerzite sv. Patrika v Maynooth v Írsku. Magisterské štúdium televíznej a video produkcie absolvovala na Univerzite v Bornemouth v Anglicku v r. 2000. Doktorandské štúdium v dokumentárnej filmovej tvorbe na VŠMU v Bratislave ukončila v roku 2015. Po skončení štúdií tri roky pôsobila v misii na Papue Novej Guinei, kde prednášala na katolíckej Univerzite Božieho Slova v Madang televíznu tvorbu a fotožurnalistiku. Po návrate na Slovensko sa postupne dostáva k priamej tvorbe dokumentárnych filmov, ktorú vníma v úzkom prepojení so svojim misijným poslaním. Podieľala sa na projekte Svedkovia viery, ktorého hlavným zámerom bola archivácia audiovizuálnych výpovedí rehoľných sestier, ktoré prežili likvidáciu kláštorov a dlhé roky vo vyhnanstve. Išlo hlavne o zdokumentovanie obdobia medzi rokmi 1945 – 1965. Spolu bolo zaznamenaných 84 svedectiev. Z najlepších výpovedí vznikol 26 minútový dokumentárny film Pilátova amnestia. Nadviazala naň celovečerným dokumentárnym filmom Súď ma a skúšaj, ktorý bol súčasťou jej dizertačnej práce. Nasledovali ďalšie filmy o Títusovi Zemanovi, SDB, - Prešiel som hranicu a pri príležitosti 10. výročia od blahorečenia bl. Zdenky Schelingovej vznikol 52 minútový dokumentárny film Zdenka.
