The deep faith of Mughal kings in astrology has been hidden in plain sight, ignored by those who failed to understand its relevance. The evidence lies in original sources: commissioned biographies like Humayunnama and Akbarnama, autobiographies such as Baburnama and Tuzuk-i-Jahangir, records of imperial correspondence and court documents.
This belief went back to pre-Islamic cultural roots and the bloodlines of Chengiz Khan, descendant of the mother goddess Alanqoa. Akbar created the formal position of Jotik Rai, or royal astrologer, a post held for a century by Brahmin pundits from Benares who were gifted their weight in gold and silver as reward for an accurate forecast. In 1542 Humayun, then a hunted fugitive without hope, became certain that the Mughal empire would be reborn after reading his son Akbar’s horoscope.
Humayun wore clothes of different colours each day, as prescribed by planetary positions. Astrology was part of statecraft. In one instance, Akbar’s astrologer convinced him to march against Kashmir’s ruler Yousaf Shah Chak in 1586 when his commanders advised that the army’s passage through the mountains might be ruinous. Jahangir issued coins with a zodiac theme. Shahjahan took pride in the title Sahib-i-Qiran-i-Sani, or Lord of the Two Conjunctions.
Even Aurangzeb set aside his religiosity when it came to astrologers—they fixed the time of his two coronations. At the age of seventy-seven, Aurangzeb told his son Bahadur Shah that every single occurrence in his tempestuous life had been predicted in the horoscope cast at his birth. Every Mughal prince consulted astrologers to fix the auspicious time for the day’s appointments.

Dějiny arabských států Zálivu
V Zálivu se dnes nachází osm státních útvarů. Oblasti v knize obsažené tvoří dohromady pět států Stát Kuvajt (Daulat al-Kuwajt), Království Bahrajn (Mamlakat al-Bahrajn), Stát Qatar (Dawlat Qatar), federace Spojených arabských emirátů, SAE (al-Imárát_al-carabíja al-muttahida) a Sultanát Omán (Saltanat cUmán). Formou vlády jsou tyto země konzervativními kmenovými monarchiemi s drobnými odchylkami, a všechny-s výjimkou SAE-mají dynastický (rodový) typ vlády. SAE představují formální výjimku, jde o federaci svého druhu, jejíž hlavou je prezident-nejvyšší představitel emirátu Abú Zabí, a předsedou vlády je nejvyšší představitel emirátu Dubaj. Výklad dějin těchto států počítá s dělením tamějších společností na „usedlé“ a „kočovné“ a má stále na paměti mobilitu tam žijícího obyvatelstva. Nepředkládá tedy procesy na něž jsme zvyklí z dějin Evropy. Předmětem sledování a analýzy je společenství – bez ohledu na to, zda žije kočovným životem v poušti, usedlým životem v oázách, nebo jako společenství v rybářských přístavech a vesničkách na jižním pobřeží Zálivu.
Dějiny Afriky
Historikové se dnes pokoušejí o objektivní propojení africké podstaty dění s evropskými a asijskými vlivy. Takový přístup však vyžaduje náročnou reinterpretaci všech dosavadních pramenů a literatury a vydává plody spíše v tematicky omezených studiích než v souhrnných pracích. Pro rozlehlost kontinentu a odlehlost populací se africká historie občas dělí na dějiny „bílé“ arabsko-berberské části a na dějiny subsaharské části kontinentu. Všechny části světadílu násilně propojil až vpád evropských kolonizátorů. Úsilí o osvobození vyvolalo v Africe vědomí sounáležitosti posílené dekolonizací nepropojilo však celý světadíl do té míry, aby bylo možné podat „kontinentální“ obraz vývoje.
Afrika poutá stále větší pozornost jako populačně expandující kontinent nabízející suroviny, energetické kapacity, jedinečnou přírodu a pozoruhodné kulturní bohatství. Dějiny kontinentu poznamenal zejména konflikt se sousední Evropou, který po obdobích otrokářství a kolonialismu dnes v emancipovaných zemích doznívá jako snaha o „druhou dekolonizaci“. Autor mapuje vývoj jednotlivých afrických států a oblastí, přehledně podaný pro starší epochy a podrobněji pro recentní dobu, přičemž k interpretaci využívá nově dostupných pramenů a rozsáhlé světové odborné literatury.
Pěchotní sruby
Více než dvě stovky samostatných pěchotních srubů, které se do září 1938 podařilo na československých hranicích vybudovat, sice představovaly jen zlomek ze zamýšleného počtu, i tak se ale dodnes jedná o obdivuhodné dílo. Mohutné „římany“ i menší „araby“ vytvořily na nejzranitelnějších úsecích severního pomezí s Německem relativně souvislou linii, která měla koncentrovanou palbou zastavit nepřátelských útok. Krycí jména, jako „V aleji“, „U cihelny“ či „Březinka“, dnes zná i široká veřejnost. Názvy většiny ostatních pěchotních srubů jsou už ale téměř zapomenuty a přežívají jen v archivních dokumentech a v rozhovorech nadšenců, kteří prvorepublikové opevnění ve volném čase navštěvují, nebo mu dokonce věnují svou péči. Každý z těchto objektů je však stejně hodnotným svědkem obrovského odhodlání našich předků bránit svou vlast před agresorem, a proto společně nahlédneme do historie srubů opečovávaných i těch zarostlých a poničených.
