Mary Barnard
Born in the Pacific Northwest, Mary Barnard (1909?2001) struck up correspondence with Ezra Pound in 1933, won Poetry magazine''s prestigious Levinson Award in 1935, and moved to New York City the following year. There she met Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams, who proclaimed her writing emblematic of "what we have been about all these years." This fully annotated volume makes available Barnard''s complete poems for the first time, along with a robust selection of her translations and prose. Most well-known for her bestselling Sappho and her influential role as the inaugural poetry curator at the University at Buffalo, Barnard was a "second-wave" modernist and "late" Imagist whose regionally grounded writing also anticipated later eco-poetry. Autobiography of Death
Winner of the 2019 International Griffin Poetry Prize Winner of the 2019 Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize‘I thought to myself that I needed to sing death, perform a rite for death, write death, then bid farewell to it. The way to send death away was to sing with my own death all the death in the sky and on the ground.’The title section of Kim Hyesoon’s visceral Autobiography of Death consists of forty-nine poems, each poem representing a single day during which the spirit roams after death before it enters the cycle of reincarnation. The poems not only give voice to those who met unjust deaths during Korea’s violent contemporary history, but also unveil what Kim calls ‘the structure of death, that we remain living in’. Autobiography of Death at once re-enacts trauma and narrates death – how we die and how we survive within this cyclical structure. In this sea of mirrors, the plural ‘you’ speaks as a body of multitudes that has been beaten, bombed, and buried many times over by history. The volume concludes on the other side of the mirror with ‘Face of Rhythm’, a poem about individual pain, illness, and meditation.

Její básně jsou panoptickou jízdou plnou svébytného, extatického jazyka. Afekt střídá koncept, slova se štěpí a zase slučují. Při opatrném průchodu házelištěm hrozí nebezpečí úrazu, lyrická mluvčí jede na plný koule a všímá si změn v ostatních i v sobě. Jedině tak se z toho všeho může vrátit zpět, střízlivá jak dělo.

The Greatest Story
A short story, encased in 6 poems, which gives a highly personal but also universal take on the Christian story highlighting some of the essential events and characters whilst showing its relevance to different times and places throughout history. With scriptural and other literary references and quotations this collection can be seen as both literary and evangelistic whilst presenting a Christian testimony and witness in an original form. Major themes running through the Old and New Testaments receive fresh insights in a sometimes philosophical and sometimes playful way. The first poem starts with a quotation from the Book of Ecclesiastes and sets a pessimistic tone but throughout the collection there is a resolution of conflict by the birth, teachings, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Eternal Dice
The Peruvian poet César Vallejo—one of Latin America’s most famous poets—was involved in various literary circles and began publishing his poems in 1914 in magazines, after discovering the works of Walt Whitman, the French symbolists, and the modernist Nicaraguan poet Rubén Dario. He brought out his first book of poems in 1919, Los heraldos negros, and in 1922, he published his famous Trilce, which met a cool reception. Vallejo spent many years of his life in Europe—in Paris and Spain. Like many of the surrealists, he became a Marxist, and he was an ardent supporter of the Republican cause during the Spanish Civil War. In his poems, Vallejo poignantly describes human misery, isolation, and anguish. As the translator Margaret Jull Costa explains: “Vallejo edited and redrafted and honed his poetry. This is the only way in which he could describe the antithetical, paradoxical, oxymoronic universe he was living in, by using language at full tilt, making it perform all kinds of acrobatics. The resulting poems often defy interpretation…” This marvelous new bilingual selection of poems spanning his career up to his early death confirms Robert Hass’s assessment that Vallejo was “one of the essential poets of the twentieth century, a heartbreaking and groundbreaking writer.”
