The Anchorage

Poetry of how we shape what is lost or past, and how it shapes us.Bernard O’Donoghue investigates anchorage as a place we build for ourselves out of memory and story. The Ireland of his youth is rich in colour and precise in detail, and while he acknowledges the power of the past, he also brings it into question: ''I wish I''d never started on this story; / It may have been a dream, or maybe not . . .'' O''Donoghue''s informal and at times playful tone is that of a poet disarming themselves as well as their reader. Here are the paradoxes at the heart of human nature: what we are most attached to can be, in the end, what ties us down; the reluctance to return can arise out of the fear of finding ourselves locked out.''O''Donoghue''s poems are an object lesson in how to write poetry that matters.'' PN Review''The poignancy of O''Donoghue''s migratory imagination is . . . the perfect travelling companion.'' Times Literary Supplement''Compelling and simple diction . . . full of gentle, sometimes undetectable flashes of humour.'' London Magazine''As with everything O''Donoghue writes, the more you look, the more you see.'' Scotsman

Southernmost: Sonnets

''Vivid ... A memoir of queer love, loss and migration … dazzling’ Karen McCarthy Woolf, author of Top Doll''It all happened a long time ago, no one now remembers this storylet me tell you how it all happened, how we turned unholy.''In Southernmost, Leo Boix takes us on a spellbinding voyage through time and imagination, from the Argentina of his birth – ‘the end of the world, the antipode’ – to a new life in England.Unearthing an old grief, the poet embarks on a glittering, encyclopaedic exploration of his own past and the Latin America he left behind: a continent haunted by the Europeans who once fixed their telescopes on its shores.Southernmost reveals truths hidden in plain sight: colonialism’s violent legacies; dissidents disappeared by the junta; a young mother’s mysterious decline; the clarifying sexuality of a boy whose father can’t bear to acknowledge it. At the same time, it tells a story – as sonnets have often done – about love, through Boix’s intimate and original evocation of gay marriage. Restlessly intelligent, intoxicated by Latin America’s landscapes and rich folklore, this virtuosic net of sonnets offers a glimpse of our world’s interconnecting threads.''In this thrilling collection of sonnets, Leo Boix maps a personal geography out of dynamic encounters between the Old World and the New'' Chloe Aridjis, author of Sea Monsters''As sinuous and expansive as the ocean between us’ Urayoán Noel, author of Transversal

Verbal Riddim - Dub Poetry

This is dub poetry: bold and musical, funny and furious. This collection brings together the work of nine inventive and brilliant poets who defined and drove the dub poetry genre. From the Caribbean, Canada and the UK, the poetry in this collection spans forty years, as dub became a powerful cultural and creative force. With roots in the reggae culture of 1970s Kingston, dub poetry uses the vivid expressions of everyday spoken language to describe and challenge the experience of life on the margins. Early dub poetry took on police violence, slums and poverty. Later, as Caribbean migrants arrived in countries like Britain and Canada, dub poets faced new issues: racism, discrimination and hostility. Over four difficult decades, dub gave marginalised people a voice for their anger, defiance and creativity. It was the soundtrack to post-Windrush culture. Serious and humorous, alive and urgent, here is the very best of dub poetry. The poets included in this collection are: Oku Onuora, Mikey Smith, Mutabaruka, Jean 'Binta' Breeze, James Berry, Benjamin Zephaniah, Ahdri Zhina Mandiela, Lillian Allen and Afua Cooper.

Goonie

SHORTLISTED FOR FORWARD PRIZE BEST FIRST COLLECTION 2025''Goonie is a boisterously brilliant collection that sings like the mother of all songbirds'' Michael Pedersen, author of The Cat Prince''An absolute beauty of a book by an absolute beauty of a writer. Goonie is an essential tribute to life and fight and love and language'' Hollie McNish, author of Lobster''I''ve enjoyed Michael Mullen''s poems since the moment I first encountered them. He is brave and funny, Glasgow-gallus and compassionate . . . Goonie announces a real new talent'' Kathleen Jamie, author and former Scottish Makar''This is gorgeous, maximalist poetry, playful and glittering but rooted in anger and honesty, a sensual Technicolor shot of Scots joy. I will be raving about this for years'' Kirstin Innes, author of Scabby Queen''These poems are tender weapons that will smash through any apathy that still remains towards the Scots language, they are pulsing with humour and wit but the reverence that Mullen gives to every day moments, characters and life make me realise there is always more to learn, more to see, deeper to go. I have no doubt Goonie is a new Scottish classic'' Leyla Josephine, Forward Prize-winning poetGoonie is the raw and joyful debut collection from award-winning Scottish poet and spoken word artist Michael Mullen. Whether exploring queerness through fierce lyrical poetry or celebrating Mullen''s beloved Scotland through vernacular vignettes, Goonie''s main preoccupation is with how we form community around us and how community, in turn, forms us. Many of the themes are encapsulated by the title poem as the narrator readies themself to take the stage and perform for their older relatives wearing an old goonie (a nightdress): ''Ma aunt raising her vodka Iron-Bru, a tumblr ae noxious flame, a toast / tae me, n ma frilly jig. Awk A jist lettum wear witever he wahnts tae wear.''In Goonie, the oral tradition of Scots combines with whip-sharp Glaswegian humour to bring alive in language and form the full spectrum of human connection: working class friends gathering round a fire, a living room ceilidh, an chat in the hairdresser''s chair, a queer awakening. These poems show the power of acceptance, togetherness and creative expression. All aspects of Mullen''s life as a performer, a poet, a queer son, a Scot, a working-class boy, come together on the page to form a collection that casts a sceptical eye on identity whilst also championing it. Ultimately, Goonie address the ties that bind: it is a testament to how love - of ourselves, our heritage, our landscape, each other - transforms everything.

When Angels Speak of Love

Feminist icon bell hooks reminds us of the full spectrum of feeling we spend in love through her inspiring collection of love poetry, with a new introduction by Cole Arthur Riley, author of Black Liturgies.Written from the heart, When Angels Speak of Love is a book of fifty love poems by bell hooks, one our most beloved public intellectuals, and author of over twenty books, including the bestselling All About Love. Poem after poem, hooks challenges our views and experiences with love—tracing the links between seduction and surrender, the intensity of desire, and the anguish of death. “Love must clean house, choose memories to keep, and memories to let go,” she writes. Mary Barnard

Born in the Pacific Northwest, Mary Barnard (1909?2001) struck up correspondence with Ezra Pound in 1933, won Poetry magazine''s prestigious Levinson Award in 1935, and moved to New York City the following year. There she met Marianne Moore and William Carlos Williams, who proclaimed her writing emblematic of "what we have been about all these years." This fully annotated volume makes available Barnard''s complete poems for the first time, along with a robust selection of her translations and prose. Most well-known for her bestselling Sappho and her influential role as the inaugural poetry curator at the University at Buffalo, Barnard was a "second-wave" modernist and "late" Imagist whose regionally grounded writing also anticipated later eco-poetry. The volume''s editor, Barnard scholar and biographer Sarah Barnsley, situates Barnard''s work within these broader literary and cultural currents. Previously unpublished poems appear alongside Barnard''s essays on her creative practice and friendships, illuminating the career, oeuvre, and ethos of this pivotal yet still underappreciated twentieth-century figure. With a foreword by Mary de Rachewiltz (author of Ezra Pound, Father and Teacher) and afterword by Barnard''s literary executor Elizabeth J. Bell, Mary Barnard is essential reading for poets, scholars, and translators.

Autobiography of Death

Winner of the 2019 International Griffin Poetry Prize Winner of the 2019 Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize‘I thought to myself that I needed to sing death, perform a rite for death, write death, then bid farewell to it. The way to send death away was to sing with my own death all the death in the sky and on the ground.’The title section of Kim Hyesoon’s visceral Autobiography of Death consists of forty-nine poems, each poem representing a single day during which the spirit roams after death before it enters the cycle of reincarnation. The poems not only give voice to those who met unjust deaths during Korea’s violent contemporary history, but also unveil what Kim calls ‘the structure of death, that we remain living in’. Autobiography of Death at once re-enacts trauma and narrates death – how we die and how we survive within this cyclical structure. In this sea of mirrors, the plural ‘you’ speaks as a body of multitudes that has been beaten, bombed, and buried many times over by history. The volume concludes on the other side of the mirror with ‘Face of Rhythm’, a poem about individual pain, illness, and meditation.

Takard be a múltamat

Hodossy to činí.

In Lobe, Cia Mangat navigates what we inherit and what we leave behind in a book which plays with private and public mythologies. These poems create a world of love and surveillance, where Diana’s revenge dress prepares for the paparazzi and aunties gossip in the threading parlor. Bodies are pierced and cut from magazines while the wedding halls beckon. Lobe is a book of resistance and reimagining, where Di escapes her buttercream wedding, a woman shaves her head and ‘george michael will sing every song you have ever wanted to you /directly accompanied by hundreds of thousands of people you love’.

The Greatest Story

A short story, encased in 6 poems, which gives a highly personal but also universal take on the Christian story highlighting some of the essential events and characters whilst showing its relevance to different times and places throughout history. With scriptural and other literary references and quotations this collection can be seen as both literary and evangelistic whilst presenting a Christian testimony and witness in an original form. Major themes running through the Old and New Testaments receive fresh insights in a sometimes philosophical and sometimes playful way. The first poem starts with a quotation from the Book of Ecclesiastes and sets a pessimistic tone but throughout the collection there is a resolution of conflict by the birth, teachings, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The author’s personal experiences on his spiritual journey make their appearances in the art, architecture, history, literature and landscape of Spain and include references to the Pilgrimage of St James to Santiago de Compostela. The collection finishes on an optimistic note about the end of the journey, whether pilgrimage or the Christian life.

Autentické básničky, citáty a pojednání autora trpícího bipolární afektivní poruchou neboli maniodepresivní psychózou.
