The UK’s landmark Housing Act of 1919 catalyzed the rapid development of state-owned public housing in planned council estates. Construction of these estates has largely ceased since the Thatcherist austerity policies of the ’80s. Fast-forward a few decades and the estates have met various fates; some council estates are now considered notorious, while others are arguably the most desirable places to live in London.
As the most comprehensive photographic document of the London council estates, this book features 275 estates from the City and every borough. Poválečná architektura jako památka
Na stavby postavené v letech 1945–1989 stále ještě nepanuje jednotný názor. Přitom již od jejich vzniku uplynulo několik desítek let, tedy doba, kterou odborná i širší veřejnost často podmiňuje nárok na památkovou ochranu. Cílem publikace je přiblížit roli Národního památkového ústavu (NPÚ) v péči o poválečnou architekturu a objasnit výzvy a problémy, kterým v této oblasti čelí. Katalog stejnojmenné výstavy je členěn do několika kapitol podle charakteru činností NPÚ, k nimž patří vytipovávání potenciálních nových památek, vedení jejich seznamu a v neposlední řadě také dozor při rekonstrukcích. Hlavní část katalogu pak pojednává o pražském metru, jemuž se autoři věnovali v rámci výzkumu v posledních letech. Soustředí se na původní architektonické řešení tohoto nejrozsáhlejšího veřejného interiéru, který v období normalizace v Československu vznikl, a na jeho památkový potenciál. Posláním publikace je rozšířit povědomí o hodnotách nedávné, ale rychle mizející architektonické vrstvy.

Slavatovský palác
Kniha, na jejíž přípravě se podíleli Martin Mádl, Radka Heisslerová, Tadeáš Kadlec, Sylva Dobalová a Petra Zelenková, pojednává o projektech hraběte Jana Jáchyma Slavaty z Chlumu a Košumberka (1635–1689). Tento český šlechtic se v roce 1673 stal majorátním pánem a vladařem hradeckého domu a začal také zastávat významné zemské úřady. Změna jeho společenského postavení se odrazila v různých stavebních projektech. Autoři knihy se v prvních kapitolách věnují barokní úpravě malostranského domu pánů z Hradce (dnes součást Velvyslanectví Italské republiky) a jeho vnitřní výzdobě. Na základě archivních materiálů sleduje průběh stavebních a uměleckých prací v paláci, prováděných mezi léty 1673–1689. V knize je rekonstruována i dispozice reprezentačních a soukromých prostor slavatovské rezidence. Interpretovány tu jsou také stavební a umělecké prvky, které se v torzální podobě dochovaly zejména v reprezentačním apartmánu. Dalším mapovaným pražským projektem je bývalá Slavatovská zahrada na Smíchově, z níž se dochovalo několik architektonických a sochařských elementů. Zvláštní pozornost je v knize věnována úpravě věže malostranského paláce a dochované bráně Slavatovské zahrady, jejichž členění představuje pozoruhodné předstupně středoevropského dynamického baroka. Za Jana Jáchyma Slavaty došlo také k úpravě jihočeského zámku Červená Lhota. Kapitola, která je věnovaná tomuto zámku, se zabývá zejména zčásti dochovaným hlavním sálem a jeho štukovou a nedávno odkrytou malířskou výzdobou. Kniha dále nabízí kontextuální studie, které pojednávají o slavatovských grafikách, a o umělcích, kteří pracovali pro Jana Jáchyma Slavatu. Obsahuje také exkurz věnovaný svatbě Marie Josefy Slavatové a Heřmana Jakuba Černína a svatební hostině, která se odehrála v nově upraveném paláci na začátku roku 1687. V samostatné kapitole jsou shrnuty také stavební proměny Slavatovského paláce v průběhu 18. a 19. století. Na závěr je zařazena edice relevantních písemných pramenů. Texty doprovází fotografický materiál, jmenný a místní rejstřík, přehled pramenů, seznam použité literatury a cizojazyčné resumé.

John Ruskin byl jedním z nejvlivnějších myslitelů 19. století. V širším povědomí figuruje především jako podporovatel Williama Turnera a prerafaelitů, případně jako neúspěšný manžel, jehož selhání nepřestalo budit voyeurskou zvědavost.
Nás však bude zajímat coby vynikající umělecký kritik a autor provokativních estetických i společensko-ekonomických teorií, jehož vizi morální a sociální obnovy světa prostřednictvím umění, architektury a designu převzali a rozvíjeli zastánci velmi rozmanitých názorových pozic. Ironií osudu se na něj odvolávali nejen kritikové kapitalismu a milovníci gotické architektury, ale také avantgardisté odmítající tradici a přesvědčení o převaze nového nad zděděným. Avšak Ruskin byl kulturní pesimista a antimodernista, který už v polovině 19. století tušil, že perspektivy nabízené technickým pokrokem nemusí být nutně zárukou lepšího a šťastnějšího života.

Opevnění měst středověké Evropy
Opevnění měst se svými věžemi, branami, ochozy a příkopy patřila k hlavním symbolům evropského středověku. Kniha se tematicky zaměřuje na tvorbu Adolfa Loose v širších souvislostech, jež vedou až k současnému architektonickému dění. Jednotliví autoři a autorky mezinárodního kolektivu se soustředili jak na jeho ideje a tvorbu, tak na příklady přímých i méně zřejmých návazností na jeho dílo. Hlavním scelujícím prvkem je vazba k prostoru v architektuře, jenž se stal klíčovým bodem architektonického myšlení na konci 19. a na začátku 20. století. Kniha zahrnuje ukázky Loosovy tvorby, dále texty historiků architektury a architektů věnujících se Loosovu dílu dlouhodobě také teoreticky (Hermann Czech, Petr Domanický, Jana Laubová, Christopher Long, Dan Merta, Martina Mertová, Maria Szadkowska, Yoshio Sakurai, Filip Šenk, William Tozer) a praktikujících architektů, kteří s koncepty a idejemi architektonického prostoru pracují a dále je rozvíjejí (Alberto Campo Baeza, Sou Fujimoto, Momoyo Kaijima, Mauricio Pezo and Sofía von Ellrichshausen). Nová publikace, jejíž vznik inicioval spolek Architectura a vydal ji ve spolupráci se společností Akontext a Technickou univerzitou v Liberci, přímo navazuje na online výstavu konanou v omezené podobě v době lockdownu v Galerii Jaroslava Fragnera u příležitosti 150 let od narození Adolfa Loose (10. 12. 1870 v Brně – 23. 8. 1933 Kalksburg u Vídně). Grafiky se opět ujal sochař a grafik Jiří Příhoda.
