Předkládaná kniha podrobně sleduje proměny tohoto hledání od počátků národního obrození, kdy Herderovy myšlenky a tehdejší evropská literární praxe probudily zájem o lidovou slovesnost a inspirovaly vznik tzv. ohlasové literatury, až po dobu první republiky, během které architekti a výtvarníci usilující o vytvoření národního stylu dospěli k syntetickým formám v čele s „rondokubismem“ okruhu Pavla Janáka.
Autor krok za krokem odhaluje paralely mezi vývojem literatury a výtvarného umění – od kořenů ve sběratelském nadšení přes mechanickou formální nápodobu až po krizi a volání po historické i umělecké pravdivosti. Franklin D. Roosevelt's landslide victory in the USA's 1932 presidential election gave him a mandate to institute a 'New Deal' for US citizens, and by so doing offer them 'a more abundant life'.
