V průběhu 19. a 20. století stálo české umění opakovaně před otázkou, co vlastně znamená „skutečně lidové“ a jak s tímto pojmem tvůrčím způsobem pracovat. Předkládaná kniha podrobně sleduje proměny tohoto hledání od počátků národního obrození, kdy Herderovy myšlenky a tehdejší evropská literární praxe probudily zájem o lidovou slovesnost a inspirovaly vznik tzv. ohlasové literatury, až po dobu první republiky, během které architekti a výtvarníci usilující o vytvoření národního stylu dospěli k syntetickým formám v čele s „rondokubismem“ okruhu Pavla Janáka.
Autor krok za krokem odhaluje paralely mezi vývojem literatury a výtvarného umění – od kořenů ve sběratelském nadšení přes mechanickou formální nápodobu až po krizi a volání po historické i umělecké pravdivosti. Franklin D. Roosevelt's landslide victory in the USA's 1932 presidential election gave him a mandate to institute a 'New Deal' for US citizens, and by so doing offer them 'a more abundant life'. For a decade between 1933 and 1943 the New Deal art programs marked the largest federal investment in the arts in the history of the country. Tens of thousands of artists and artisans across the country produced some 2,500 murals, 100,000 easel paintings, 17,000 sculptures, and 200,000 prints.
How should we understand the history and legacy of the New Deal art programs today? Dějiny českých dějin umění II. 1970–1990
Publikace je druhým dílem historického vylíčení proměn akademického oboru dějiny a teorie umění v dnešní České republice a zabývá se dvaceti lety tzv. normalizace. Navazuje na první díl Dějiny českých dějin umění 1945–1969 / Dějiny umění slouží vědě o člověku (UMPRUM 2020). Na základě rozsáhlého archivního studia, čtení dobových uměleckohistorických publikací, pamětnických rozhovorů a v neposlední řadě i svých vlastních vzpomínek a zkušeností vykresluje autorka období, kdy čeští historici a historičky umění dosáhli dlouho připravovaných cílů svého oboru, avšak museli se potýkat s omezováním svobody vědeckého bádání i vysokoškolského studia a s nemožností volného cestování. Kniha poprvé představuje blízký pohled na navigování jednotlivců i celé oborové komunity v situaci napětí mezi každodenností, podvolením a vzdorem v intelektuální společnosti 70.–80. let. Tuto dobu autorka chápe jako „naši domácí postmodernu“, jež vedla k rozštěpení reality, které však neprobíhá podle konvenčního rozlišení dobra a zla. V neposlední řadě představuje kniha teoreticky podložený pokus, jak včlenit badatelský subjekt do studia soudobých dějin. Systematický i chronologický výklad nabízejí vhled do fungování infrastruktur humanitního vědeckého oboru a odhalují strategie vyrovnávání s cenzurou i dalšími omezeními. Kniha předkládá dramatické lidské příběhy rámované konfrontací s tajnou politickou policií a požadavkem na politickou konformitu prostřednictvím členství v komunistické straně. Na druhé straně zkoumá také zkušenosti autonomie a svobody na okrajích povoleného, zejména v samizdatové produkci, přičemž klade větší důraz na vnitřně svobodné jednání než na status oběti. Práce ukazuje tři roky přestavby, zvrat listopadové revoluce a překvapení následujícího roku 1990, přičemž nabízí podněty k tomu, abychom jej přestali zjednodušeně považovat za „rok nula“. Ludwig Pollak (1868–1943) pocházel z pražské obchodnické rodiny. Studoval dějiny umění a klasickou archeologii na Německé Karlo-Ferdinandově univerzitě v Praze a později také ve Vídni, kde studia zakončil doktorátem. Roku 1893 získal stipendium na studijní cestu do Itálie (a také do Řecka). Posléze se natrvalo usadil v Římě, kde se živil jako obchodník s uměním. Kniha přináší edici Pollakových dopisů jeho učiteli, pražskému profesoru archeologie Wilhelmu Kleinovi a celoživotnímu příteli, historikovi Josefu Šustovi, se kterým se seznámil v Římě, kde Šusta pobýval díky stipendiu. Pollakovy dopisy, zpřístupněné zde v německém originále i v českém překladu, přinášejí cenné svědectví o zmizelém světě kontaktů mezi českými a německými (popř. českoněmeckými) vědci v období před první světovou válkou a v období meziválečném. Pollak zahynul s celou svojí rodinou v Osvětimi roku 1943.
