Pollakovy dopisy, zpřístupněné zde v německém originále i v českém překladu, přinášejí cenné svědectví o zmizelém světě kontaktů mezi českými a německými (popř. českoněmeckými) vědci v období před první světovou válkou a v období meziválečném. Pollak zahynul s celou svojí rodinou v Osvětimi roku 1943.

The V&A Book of Colour in Design

A beautifully presented survey of design and the applied arts, explored not by use, material, form or date - but by colour The V&A Book of Colour in Design is attractively simple: a celebration and exploration of colour, as revealed through objects in the world-class collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Structured by colour, it offers fascinating insights into the choices made by designers and makers from across the world and throughout history. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction that considers the history, symbolism, and use of an individual colour. Objects - from items of jewelry, textiles, glassware and ceramics to furniture and more - are reproduced in a visual selection that explores the varied hues of every colour. However different objects within each section may be in their detail and meaning, they are united by their common colour, revealing surprising connections between them. Throughout, narrative captions bring together disparate items from across the V&A's collection to explore the universal significance of colour in art and design. Beautifully designed, this highly visual, colour-led survey of design and the applied arts is a compelling sourcebook with broad appeal for anyone interested or involved in all aspects of visual culture.

Immortal Thoughts

A remarkable, heartfelt, beautifully written analysis of the late work of 19 major artists that Max Porter describes as 'completely and utterly marvellous'. 'Painting … exists and exults in immortal thoughts' William Blake In 2020, as the spread of Covid-19 causes pandemonium worldwide, an elderly artist returns to his childhood home to watch the transcendent beauty of the seasons and reflect on the final work of the artists he most admires. It seems to him that in their final art works - their late style - that they have something remarkable in common. This has more to do with intuition and memory than with rationality or reason and comes from trying to write about painting itself. Immortal Thoughts: Late Style in a Time of Plague is an anthology of these reflections. In this personal and moving account, nineteen short essays on artists are interspersed with short accounts of the cataclysmic global progress of the disease in poignant contrast to the beauty of the seasons in the isolated house and garden, narrative strands that are closely intertwined. From Cézanne's last watercolours to Michelangelo's final five drawings, Rembrandt and suffering to Gwen John and absence, Christopher Neve dwells on artists' late ideas, memory, risk, handling and places, in the terrible context of Time and mortality. As much art history as a discussion of great art in the context of the Dance of Death, Neve writes with renewed passion about Bonnard, Michelangelo, Morandi, Poussin, Soutine and many others in his distinctive style.

Medium Hot

Hito Steyerl is one of the most celebrated artists of our time. Her work, both as an artist and a writer, has consistently challenged the political boundaries between art and technology. In this new collection of groundbreaking essays, she explores how AI, the use of large language models and the algorithmic creation of imagery transform our understanding of the world. She argues that such practices cannot be divorced from the economic and political conditions of the times. Medium Hot is a collection of scintillating meditations on the limits of art and technology: the essential handbook for the present conjuncture. The pieces here probe the manufacture and distribution of images in the age of AI and climate change. She asks whether art can be made not only by machines but for machines. She argues against the production of images that heat up the planet, disfranchise workers and fuel the arms trade, and questions whether such creations can even be called art. In an era of such rapid change, Steyerl does vital work investigating whether machine learning will infiltrate every aspect of our lives and what that means for the future.

The Militant Muse

A beautifully written and elegantly constructed narrative that explores the intense, complex and far-reaching female friendships among the Surrealists during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The Militant Muse documents what it meant to be young, ambitious and female in the context of an avant-garde movement defined by celebrated men whose educational, philosophical and literary backgrounds were often quite different from those of their younger lovers and companions. Focusing on the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, Whitney Chadwick charts five intense, far-reaching female friendships among the surrealists to show how surrealism and the experiences of war, loss and trauma shaped individual women's transitions from beloved muses to mature artists. Her vivid account includes the fascinating story of Claude Cahun and Suzanne Malherbe's subversive activities in occupied Jersey, as well as the experiences of Lee Miller and Valentine Penrose at the frontline. The book draws on personal correspondence between the women, including the extraordinary letters between Leonora Carrington and Leonor Fini following the imprisonment of Carrington's lover Max Ernst, and the letter Frida Kahlo shared with her friend and lover Jacqueline Lamba years after it was written in the 1930s during a difficult stay in Paris. This thoroughly engrossing history brings a new perspective to the political context of surrealism, as well as fresh insights on the vital importance of female friendship to artistic and intellectual flowering.

Poetika kódování: Umění v technocénu

Světu dnes vládnou proprietární algoritmy, tajná datová úložiště a neproniknutelné systémy.

Kniha odhaluje historii improvizace v západním postmoderním tanci a zároveň prostřednictvím reflexí umělkyň a umělců přibližuje současnou improvizační praxi. Jako taková je užitečná pro umělce a umělkyně, studentstvo, učitelstvo i diváctvo taneční improvizace. In Secretly Alive, dance artists Mish Rais, Mirka Eliášová and Lizzy Le Quesne meet as editors to share the questions and discoveries of the three-year artistic research project ‘Improvisation as Choreographic, Authorial and Creative Principle’. The editors invited six renowned artists into the studio and conducted in-depth interviews exploring their embodied practices. Rosalind Crisp, Julyen Hamilton, Wendy Houstoun, Eva Karczag, Daniel Lepkoff and Nita Little share their diverging and converging journeys to improvisation, their views on pedagogy and instant composition, and their strategies and experiences of making and performing for the stage. The six interviews are accompanied by essays by each of the three researcher-editors considering dance improvisation‘s creative value and potential from different angles: as a choreographic process, a discipline of awareness and a site of relational experimentation. Revealing both histories of improvisation in Western postmodern dance and details of current improvisational practices through the reflections of six major artists, this book will be of use to artist practitioners, students, teachers and audiences of dance improvisation

Screenprints (Victoria & Albert Museum)

A celebration of the rich 20th- and 21st-century tradition of screenprinting as a means of artistic expression, from its commercial origins in 1920s America to the limited-edition screenprints of the post-war period and today, by artists such as Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley and Damien Hirst. Screenprints: A History, the first title in the V&A's new series on the history and practice of printmaking, is a celebration of the fine-art applications of this versatile medium, from the commercial origins of the screenprinting process in 1920s America, its pivotal role in 1960s Pop and Op Art among artists such as Andy Warhol and Bridget Riley, through to its adoption by Damien Hirst and the YBAs of the 1990s, and its enduring presence in contemporary art. This beautifully designed, strikingly illustrated introduction will appeal to art lovers and practising artists everywhere. The origins of the screenprinting process are introduced through early artistic precursors, such as the stencil and pochoir printing in the making of Henri Matisse’s Jazz, and other artists’ books. Screenprinting became one of the most important techniques in the rise of artists’ limited-edition fine art prints from the 1960s onwards, seen here in the work of notable figures such as Roy Lichtenstein and Eduardo Paolozzi, and contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, who have variously engaged with the medium’s commercial origins and, conversely, its capacity for a hand-made aesthetic. Special focus is given to lesser-known names who pioneered the use of the screenprint in fine art in the UK, the USA and Europe, including Francis Carr and Ben Shahn, while tracing its global spread through Africa, the Caribbean and Australasia. An illustrated, step-by-step guide to the practical process further enriches this multifaceted account. The democratic medium has further lent itself to spontaneous graphic protest, notably in the Atelier Populaire posters made in Paris in 1968, featured here and embodying screenprinting’s unique qualities, rich colours and graphic impact.
