Karácsony estéjén tizenkét agglegény-barát találkozik egymással, valamennyien a családias ünnep száműzöttjei, nincs hová menniük, egyedül nem akarnak maradni, s ezért együtt vacsoráznak. Utána pedig, hogy eltöltsék az időt, külön-külön mindegyik elmeséli: miért nem nősült meg. A cím szerint valamennyi elbeszélésnek ezt kellene bizonyítani, hogy nősülni nem érdemes, a „hosszúhajú veszedelem”, a nő nem érdemli meg a férfinem figyelmét és fáradozását. Az efféle oktalan általánosítás azonban nem lehetett kedvére az írónak, s ezért nem is törekedett rá. Vannak nők, akik nem érdemlik meg a fenntartás nélküli szeretetet – ez a legtöbb, amit kiolvashatunk az elbeszélések némelyikéből, ki azért, mert zsarnoki módon féltékeny, a másik önző, s ezt látszólagos önzetlenséggel, vagy konok hazugsággal palástolja. A könyvet azonban az teszi igazán kedvessé és feledhetetlenné, hogy a társaság fele minden célzatos él mellőzésével a szépséges első szerelem emlékét idézi fel. Szépséges és fájdalmas emlékek, hiszen a szerelmeseknek nem rajtuk álló okok miatt kellett elszakadni egymástól. A Hosszúhajú veszedelem egységes keretbe fűzött elbeszéléseiből tehát minden emberhez szólóan a nosztalgia, az évtizedeken át elfojtva parázsló fájdalom remegése, az emlékezés és újraélés sajgó gyönyörűsége a költészet és a szerelem örök szépsége sugárzik.
