Karen Dinesen, a huszonhét éves dán úrilány 1912 telén eljegyezte magát svéd unokatestvérével, Bror Blixen báróval. A házasságkötésre Mombaszában került sor. Vilmos svéd királyi herceg volt az egyik tanú, aki így emlékezett a menyasszonyra: „Karcsú, jó alakú, okos szemű, dús gesztenyebarna hajú, bájos és elegáns fiatal nő…” Hatalmas birtokot vásároltak Kenyában, Nairobi közelében. A báró tehetséges szafarivezetőnek bizonyult – így ismerkedett meg gróf Széchenyi Zsigmonddal, a vadászíróval és Ernest Hemingwayjel is. Karen a kelet-afrikai kikuju, szomáli, maszáj emberekkel és kultúrájukkal ismerkedett ezalatt, nagyobbrészt férjétől külön, majd elváltan, viharos szerelmi viszonyban Danys Finch-Hattonnal. Afrikában lett belőle lenyűgözően egyedi karakterű író, a huszadik századi memoárirodalom nagyasszonya. Távol Afrikától, ezzel a címmel írta meg dán birtokára visszatérve 1937-ben előbb angolul, majd dánul lírai visszaemlékezését, (ez alapján készült Sydney Pollack hét Oscar-díjas filmje Meryl Streeppel és Robert Redforddal). Azóta is példa nélküli hódolattal és alázattal fordult Fekete-Afrika felé művében. Olyan kivételes érzékenységgel festette le tájait, lakóit, amilyenről azóta is alig tett tanúságot európai művész. És ami életrajzából és levelezéséből tudható: szenvedélyesen gyűlölte és megvetette a brit gyarmati közigazgatás korlátolt felsőbbrendűségét.
Marina
Carlos Ruiz Zafón (1964–2020) napjaink nemzetközi irodalmának egyik legelismertebb szerzője, és Cervantes után világszerte a második legolvasottabb spanyol író. Műveit több mint ötven nyelvre fordították le. 1993-ban ifjúsági regénnyel mutatkozik be (A köd hercege), 1998-ban jelenik meg a Marina, 2001-ben pedig A szél árnyéka, mely az Elfeledett Könyvek Temetője első regénye. A sorozat – mely öt világrészen is a kortárs irodalom szenzációjává vált – további részei az Angyali játszma, A mennyország fogságában és a Lelkek labirintusa, melyek tetszőleges sorrendben olvashatók. A The New York Times így ír a fájóan rövid életű szerzőről: „García Márquez, Umberto Eco és Jorge Luis Borges találkozása egy újszerű és elsöprő stílusban.” „Ki merjük jelenteni, hogy Zafón Barcelona Dickense, ma ő az elbeszélés művészetének legtehetségesebb írója” – mondja róla a Corriere della Sera. Alice Walker (Georgia, 1944. február 9. – ) amerikai író, költő. A feminista mozgalom egyik fő képviselője. A Nemzeti Könyvdíj (National Book Award) első női afroamerikai nyertese. Művei eddig több mint 15 millió példányban keltek el. Bíborszín című, 1982-ben megjelent, Pulitzer-díjas, Steven Spielberg által 1987-ben megfilmesített levélregényének üzenete időn és téren átívelő. A túlélés legelemibb, örök érvényű szabályára tanítja meg az olvasót: soha ne add fel! „Lehetek szegény, lehetek nigger, lehetek csúnya, és meglehet, hogy főzni se tudok, mongya egy hang mindenkinek, aki odahallgat. De itt vagyok.” A történet főhőse a szexista szabályok fogságában vergődő Celie. Szibériai garnizon
Jaroslav Hašek Švejk, a derék katona és Erich Maria Remarque Nyugaton a helyzet változatlan című regényeivel említik egy lapon a milliós példányszámban elkelt, először 1927-ben, Kolozsvárott megjelent Szibériai garnizon-t. A jogász végzettségű, újságíróként elhelyezkedő Markovits Rodion (1884–1948) saját és egykori katonatársai tapasztalatai alapján írta meg kollektív riportregényét az első világháború küzdelmeiről, a kelet-szibériai hétéves hadifogolylét mindennapjairól és a hazatérés viszontagságairól. Nemcsak a téma, de a megírás módja is – a kisember szemszögéből elmesélt történet abszurd és szatirikus hatást kelt, miközben sohasem didaktikus vagy ítélkező – kirobbanó sikert eredményezett: a hatalmas olvasói érdeklődés miatt a kiadó alig győzte utánnyomni a könyvet; két év alatt tizennégy országban adták ki, lefordították többek között német, angol, francia, olasz, kínai, finn, holland és román nyelve. Külföldön, például Olaszországban azóta is keresett mű, nálunk politikai okokból elfeledkeztek róla néhány évtizedre. A Szibériai garnizon nyelvi és látásmódbeli elevenségének nem ártott az idő, ahogy a benne foglalt történelem- és létszemlélet is kortárssá – klasszikussá – avatja.

Písal sa rok 1942 a Eva Adamiová nastúpila do vladu do Osvienčimu. Pre množ-stvo ľudí vo vagóne sa sotva mohla nadýchnuť a z dvojdňového státia na nohách bola úplne vyčerpaná.
