Připomíná, jak úzce jsou spjaté evropské a africké dějiny a jak se protínaly s individuálními osudy Východoafričanů. ?Když byl Iljás ještě chlapec, ukradli ho rodičům na pobřeží východní Afriky němečtí koloniální vojáci. Spoustu let strávil mimo domov, zažil utrpení, ale také se naučil číst a psát, což v té době rozhodně nebylo běžné. Po návratu domů Iljás zjišťuje, že jeho rodiče zemřeli a sestra Afíja žije v cizí rodině, kde zažívá pohrdání a bití.
O několik let později se z války vrací také Hamza, zjizvený na těle i na duši, a kromě oblečení nemá nic – dokud nepotká krásnou, neohroženou Afíju. Zamilují se do sebe a nějakou dobu spolu spokojeně žijí, ale ve vzdáleném světě probíhají velké změny a začínají ovlivňovat i jejich okolí. Afíja s Hamzou se musí přizpůsobit novým podmínkám a připravit na ně i svého syna, u kterého se celý příběh uzavírá.
Abdulrazak Gurnah, teprve druhý nositel Nobelovy ceny původem ze subsaharské Afriky, představuje dlouho neslyšený hlas, který promlouvá ke čtenářům po celém světě a teprve v posledních letech se konečně dostává i k českému publiku. Dozvuky jsou románem zasazeným do specifického myšlenkového i kulturního prostředí, ale zároveň reflektují univerzální lidské zkušenosti, jako je utrpení, ztráta domova a milovaného člověka, láska a odpuštění.

Chlapec a pes
Román Chlapec a pes (Šónen to inu) z roku 2020 je velice dojemný příběh psa Tamona, který přišel v roce 2011 o majitelku při ničivém zemětřesení a následné tsunami na severovýchodním pobřeží Japonska a putuje několik let po celém Japonsku za svou novou rodinou.
Jedná se vlastně o šest samostatných, ale vzájemně propojených příběhů, ve kterých Tamon zásadním způsobem ovlivňuje a mění životy lidí, s nimiž se na své dlouhé cestě setkává. Autor mistrně popisuje i drsné detaily a těžké okolnosti, jež určují životy lidí, kteří se psa na jeho cestě ujali.
I přes svůj romantický název je kniha určena dospělým čtenářům. Nebyl by to Seišú Hase, kdyby v této knize, která se velmi vymyká jeho ostatní tvorbě, chyběla jeho oblíbená témata jako smrt, vražda nebo organizovaný zločin. Autor nikoho nesoudí. Je to zkušený pozorovatel, který nám jednoduše představuje lidi, místa, čas a zvířata a ukazuje, jak se vzájemně ovlivňují a nakonec smysluplně propojují.
Román je emotivní a plný různých zajímavých myšlenek a osloví každého, kdo miluje psy a má rád dojemné a napínavé příběhy ze života. Tento bestseller získal v roce 2020 prestižní Naokiho cenu a byl přeložen do spousty jazyků.

Píseň jedovatého stromu
Píše se rok 1960 a v Belgickém Kongu to vře. Vesnička Kilanga kdesi v hlubinách džungle zatím působí stejně poklidně jako dřív a život její opuštěné misie rozvíří pouze příjezd amerického kazatele Nathana. Barvitý příběh plný humoru i bolesti, v němž do života obyčejných lidí krutě zasáhne válka a špinavá hra velmocí, vyvolává úžas nejen nad nádherou i nemilosrdnou tvrdostí africké přírody, ale především nad kulturním a jazykovým bohatstvím obou civilizací, pro něž je přitom tak těžké si vzájemně porozumět.
