To be human is to strive to be better, and we cannot be better without knowing what is best. In ancient Greek philosophy and the Bible, what is best is god. Plato and Aristotle argue that the goal of human life is to become as much like god as is humanly possible. Despite its obvious importance, this theme of assimilation to god has been neglected in Anglo-American scholarship. Classical Greek philosophy is best understood as a religious quest for divinity by means of rational discipline. By showing how Greek philosophy grows out of ancient Greek religion and how the philosophical quest for god compares to the biblical quest, we see Plato and Aristotle properly as major religious thinkers. In their shared quest for divine perfection, Greek philosophy and the Bible have enough in common to make their differences deeply illuminating.

V ústřední kapitole – Co je skutečné? – staví proti Protagorovu výroku, že „měřítkem všeho je člověk“, přesvědčení, že skutečnost je dána spletí vztahů v přírodě a že člověk tvoří jen její nepatrnou část. Realita se zde vykládá jako dynamická souhra vztahů, sil a tvarů, jež tvoří základ našeho poznávání i jednání. V závěru kniha otevírá otázky role vědy, umění i dalších diskurzů při zobrazování přírody, zkoumá postavení člověka v ní i povahu iluzí a deziluzí, které provázejí lidské sebepochopení.

The last twenty years have witnessed a 'social turn' in analytic philosophy. Social epistemology has been crucial to it. Social epistemology starts by repudiating the kind of individualistic epistemology, which, since Descartes' Meditations and through Kant's maxim 'Think for yourself', has dominated philosophy. Aby se lidstvo dokázalo vypořádat se svou současnou situací, musí zvítězit demokracie, a podle jeho přesvědčení po modernismu a postmodernismu musí nastoupit kritickorealistickým myšlením a morálkou podložený neomodernismus. Sociální filosofie by se měla částečně změnit, sociologie a politologie by měly po vzoru psychologie a psychiatrie vytvořit nově pojaté obory socioterapie a sociopedagogika, a makroekonomie by se měla plně integrovat do ostatních společenských oborů. The author of this book has expanded the subject matter into historical, philosophical, sociological and psychological contexts. In order for humanity to cope with its present situation, democracy must prevail, and in his view, after modernism and postmodernism, it is neomodernism based on critical-realistic thinking and morality that must take over. Social philosophy should be partly changed, sociology and political science should form a new discipline of socio-therapy, following the example of psychology and psychiatry, and pedagogy and macroeconomics should be fully integrated into other social disciplines. Agnosticism ought to be promoted in religious beliefs, ecology in politics and a centre-left orientation should prevail, preventing excessive differences in wealth between people and countries. This is a lucid, readably written and multifaceted groundbreaking work of potentially far-reaching significance.
