Semi-Secular Worldviews and the Belief in Something Beyond
An increasingly large part of the population in the West identifies as religious Nones. Contrary to what might be assumed, most of them are not outright atheists. They reject traditional religion, but many pursue different forms of spirituality, and many entertain supernatural ideas. This Element concerns the worldview of these ''semi-secular'' Nones. When asked about whether they believe in God, they usually provide answers like ''Perhaps not God per se, but I do believe in something''. Belief in ''somethin'' is the ontological cornerstone of many Nones'' worldviews. The authors reconstruct it as the view ''Somethingism''. Sovereign Reason
We often invoke broad ideas of reason, rationality, reasonableness, reasons, reasoning, and related concepts in commonsense and express their apparent authority through ordinary language and social practices. Despite what many philosophers, economists, psychologists, novelists, and others claim, the reason of everyday life is far more substantive than cold logic or calculating self-interest. Sovereign Reason: Autonomy and our Interests of Reason explores the idea that our power of reason includes an expansive set of governing abilities, substantive motives, and substantive principles. The volume develops this novel but partial theory of reason by drawing on a wide variety of Kant''s texts and highlighting themes in our ordinary ways of speaking and thinking. The unifying idea of the Sovereignty Conception of Reason is that of an autonomous person who governs herself by reason in all respects. The Sovereignty Conception of Reason dramatically extends traditional Kantian conceptions of rational self-governance. Heidegger on Ethics

Kriticky se vymezuje vůči přebujelému moralizování a zdůrazňuje význam empatie, imaginace a intuice při rozhodování v nejistých podmínkách. Kniha čerpá z širokého spektra zdrojů – od řecké tragédie a Platónovy filosofie po současné poznatky z neurověd a evoluční biologie. Skrze analýzu lidského jednání ukazuje, že etika by měla být nikoli dogmatickým systémem, ale dynamickým hledáním rovnováhy mezi univerzálními principy a konkrétními situacemi.
Nové vymezení středověké filosofie - Latinský věk (354-1664) jako éra znaků
John Deely (1942–2017) nám líčí dějiny latinského myšlení, a to z hlediska vývoje sémiotiky, která je podle něj jedním ze základních přínosů latinské civilizace. Deely rozplétá její zápasy od doby Augustinovy přes scholastiku až do první poloviny 17. století, kdy latinský věk předává štafetu novověkému myšlení. Latinská křesťanská filosofie se zabývala především dějinami spásy, usilovala o charakterizaci Boha, světa a člověka v něm, přičemž šlo vždycky o poctivé úsilí vysoce vzdělaných lidí. Deely nabízí příběh, který do latinských staletí vnáší novou perspektivu, než na jakou jsme v novověku zvyklí. Teologické spory odsouvá stranou a současně nabízí možnost pochopit, o co šlo. Dokáže se držet tématu výkladu světa a pokud možno nezabředávat do zákrut středověké teologie či do politických dějin.
Augustin z Hipponu jako hlavní otec-zakladatel latinské tradice zavedl do latinského myšlení pojem znaku (signum). Přitom se domníval, že jenom překládá řecký pojem sémeion. Avšak zatímco sémeion se vztahuje pouze k projevům přírodním, signum se vztahuje také k jazyku a lidskému nitru, jež rozhodujícím způsobem přispívají k rozumění. Naše představy, zkušenosti, paměťové stopy atd., věci existující ve světě i ty v naší mysli mohou vystupovat též jako znaky, tj. označovat něco jiného. Tato základní figura je po celá staletí upřesňována a doplňována, aby nauka vyvrcholila v pozdní scholastice Janem od sv. Tomáše alias Johnem Poinsotem (1589–1644). Nauka možná vyvrcholila, ale svět už neovlivnila: ubíral se jinam, inspirován Poinsotovými současníky, jako byli Galileo a Descartes. Teprve Charles S. Peirce (1839–1914) se začne obírat středověkou scholastikou (tu pozdní patrně neznal), navazuje na latinské myšlení a buduje novou nauku, sémiotiku, jež je v Deelyho podání paralelou k novověké filosofii, jak se odvíjela u Kanta, a mostem k postnovověkému myšlení.

Co je to rytmus? Jak rytmus zakoušíme a jak rytmicky žijeme? V jakém smyslu je skutečnost utvářená rytmicky? Jak lze rytmus definovat nejen jako princip organizace času, ale také prostoru? Čím se zabývá rytmická analýza? Jak spolu souvisejí vibrace, oscilace, cykly, periody, opakování, bubnování, vlnění, otáčení, fluktuace a uspořádání? Tyto a mnohé další otázky inspirovaly naše zkoumání rytmu, procházející napříč dějinami západního myšlení, napříč různými teoretickými disciplínami a životními i kulturními projevy. Rozhovory o rytmu tu vedeme s různými lidmi od Archilocha a Démokrita přes Platóna a Aristoxena až k Bachelardovi, Deleuzovi, Prigoginovi či Kode9. Procházíme přitom různými prostředími – vířícími shluky elementárních částic, vlnami na pobřeží, lidskými těly, babylónskými zahradami, hudebními zápisy, rušnými ulicemi a mnoha dalšími polyrytmickými svazky – a pokoušíme se zjistit, jak vypadá jádro rytmu.

Jelen műve egyik legkiforrottabb munkája, amelyben újra előveszi Az ember méltóságáról írt beszédében már felvetett témát, az ember központi szerepét a teremtésben. A makrokozmosz és mikrokozmosz analógiájának értelmezései a római disputa meghiúsulása és a Kúria általi üldöztetése után itt keresztényibb megközelítésben olvashatók, hiszen a hét előadás közül mindegyik „Krisztusban ér véget”.
Mindazonáltal a könyv záróakkordja egy teljesen újszerű, kabbalista módszerrel végigvitt keresztény vallásfilozófiai fejtegetés. A teremtés hétszeres elemzésének hét szempontja a következő: az első három előadás a világ hármas (földi, égi, angyali) felosztásáról szól, a negyedik az ember mint mikrokozmosz felépítéséről és lehetőségeiről, az ötödik és hatodik az első négy összefüggéseit tárgyalja, míg a hetedik a teremtmények végső boldogságának mibenlétét boncolgatja, ahol az angyalokon kívül egyedül az ember számára adatik meg a kegyelem révén az Istenhez való visszatérés lehetősége.

The Paradox of Morality
The last work by “one of the most singular voices of twentieth-century French philosophy” (Critical Inquiry) on the complexities of love in public and private life Vladimir Jankélévitch stands alongside Emmanuel Levinas as one of the most admired French ethicists of the twentieth century, known for his work on everything from the possibility of forgiveness after the Holocaust to the philosophy of music. In his final work, The Paradox of Morality (1981), Jankélévitch turns his attention to the fundamental questions of the moral life: the struggle between egoism and self-sacrifice, the question of whether pure or infinite love exists, and moral agency in the pursuit of human rights. In dialogue with philosophers from Plato to Nietzsche, Jankélévitch proposes that the moral life comprises an acrobatic act in which we must balance the demands of love and our responsibility to the other against our natural attachment to the self. Morality is the activity of realizing and combining, in each individual action, the maximum amount of love possible with the minimum of being. This oscillation between self and other—and between being and love—is never fixed or stable. In the end, morality is not something that exists in the world of contemplation; instead, it is the substance of what must be done here and now: created anew in each new moment.

Kant on Marriage
This Element proposes a new understanding of Kant''s account of marriage by examining the context and background conversations that shaped its development and by discussing the conception of equality at its core. Marriage as Kant understands it relies on a certain form of equality between spouses. Yet this conception of equality does not precede marriage, and carries important limitations ? one of which being its inaccessibility to a significant proportion of the German population at the time. The protections and rights conferred by marriage were thus not accessible to all. Their shared preoccupation with this issue allows the author to put Kant''s thoughts in relation with those of eighteenth-century feminist writers Theodor von Hippel and Marianne Ehrmann. Despite these limitations, the author finds Kant''s conception of marriage is compatible with the achievement of certain egalitarian goals, suggesting that it may be able to improve women''s lives in a liberal state.
