Wise

'Transformative . . . gripping . . . sincerely recommended' GUARDIAN'Frank Tallis is one of the most insightful psychologists of our time . . . Wise is for anyone, young or old, in search of happiness' JACK SYMES'This is a rich and beautiful book' GWEN ADSHEAD, author of THE DEVIL YOU KNOWWe are living longer and our lifespan after the middle years continues to extend due to medical advances. But how do you age wisely? How do you remain psychologically healthy and fully engaged given the immense and daunting challenges of later life - accumulated regrets, loss, disappointments, physical deterioration, and mortalit? rom ancient Greece to the 21st century, the greatest philosophers and psychologists have considered these questions, and remarkably, their opinions converge. There is a single essential task - integration - that once accomplished, equips us to cope with the many problems we are likely to encounter as we get older. What's more, their insights are supported by cutting-edge neuroscience. Exploring the common ground shared by the Stoics and the Existentialists, William James and CG Jung, Iain McGilchrist and Daniel Siegel, clinical psychologist Frank Tallis has written his own essential alternative to the standard self-help prescriptions. Frank Tallis takes on such questions as how we can embrace and accept our mortality when our brains are hard-wired to resist it, how we can achieve meaning in our lives, and how we can understand the passage of time and make the most of it. It's immensely readable whilst also intelligent and thought-provoking.

Shift

Whether it's anxiety about the dentist, boiling rage when we're stuck in traffic or devastation after a painful break-up, our lives are filled with situations that send us spiralling. But as difficult as our emotions can be, they are also a superpower. When they're activated in the right ways and at the right time, they function like an immune system, alerting us to our surroundings, telling us how to react to a situation and helping us make the right choices. But how do we make our emotions work for us rather than against us? Acclaimed psychologist Dr Ethan Kross has devoted his scientific career to answering this question. In Shift, he dispels common myths - for instance, that avoidance is toxic or that we should always strive to live in the moment - and provides a new framework for shifting our emotions so they don't take over our lives. Shift weaves groundbreaking research with riveting stories of people struggling and succeeding to manage their emotions - from a mother whose fear prompted her to make a spur-of-the-moment decision that would save her daughter's life mid-flight to a nuclear code-carrying Navy SEAL who learned how to embrace both joy and pain during a hellish training activity. Dr Kross shows us that we already have access to a wide array of tools and demonstrates how to harness them to be healthier and more successful. Filled with actionable advice, cutting-edge research and inspiring stories, Shift puts the power back into our hands, so we can control our emotions without them controlling us - and help others do the same.

Lives in Common

Challenging the received wisdom, this candid portrait of three cities reveals a history of co-existence between Muslims, Christians and Jews from the nineteenth century until the present day. Most books dealing with the Israeli–Palestinian conflict see events through the eyes of policy-makers, generals or diplomats. Menachem Klein offers an illuminating alternative by telling the intertwined histories, from street level upwards, of three cities — Jerusalem, Jaffa and Hebron — and their intermingled Jewish, Muslim and Christian inhabitants, from the nineteenth century to the present. Each of them was and still is a mixed city. Jerusalem and Hebron are holy places, while Jaffa till 1948 was Palestine’s principal city and main port of entry. Klein portrays a society in the late Ottoman period in which Jewish-Arab interactions were intense, frequent, and meaningful, before the onset of segregation and separation gradually occurred in the Mandate era. The unequal power relations and increasing violence between Jews and Arabs from 1948 onwards are also scrutinised. Throughout, Klein bases his writing not on the official record but rather on a hitherto hidden private world of Jewish-Arab encounters, including marriages and squabbles, kindnesses and cruelties, as set out in dozens of memoirs, diaries, biographies and testimonies. Lives in Common brings together the voices of Jews and Arabs in a mosaic of fascinating stories, of lived experiences and of the major personalities that shaped them over the last 150 years.

Captain de Havilland's Moth

A nostalgic celebration of the golden age of aviation - and the iconic DH60 Moth in its centenary year'A wonderfully affecting, highly entertaining, at times elegiac account of a legendary aircraft' JOHN NICHOL 'A joy... Alexander Norman brings to life a golden era in aviation history in such a vivid and entertaining way' ROWLAND WHITE'Norman's thoroughly compelling history... delivers scrapes and soarings in equal, diverting measure' New StatesmanThe most iconic of all light aircraft, the DH60 Moth was the brain-child of Geoffrey de Havilland, visionary son of an angry and disappointed Victorian clergyman. A successful designer of military aircraft, Geoffrey dreamed of doing for aircraft what Ford had done for cars. The emergence of his Moth in February 1925 marked the beginning of an important but neglected episode in British social history - the craze for flying which gripped a war-weary world for more than a decade. The most successful aircraft of its era, the Moth was the one in which people had the greatest adventures. And it was the Moth which showed that flying was safe, practical and, potentially, open to all. True, many early Mothists were uber-privileged. The Prince of Wales had one, as did his brother, the Duke of Gloucester. Beryl Markham, who had affairs with both, learned to fly in a Moth. But Laura Ingalls, who did 980 successive loops in hers, Aspy Engineer, the Indian schoolboy who won the Aga Khan Trophy in his and Amy Johnson, the typist from Hull who flew hers to Australia showed that, to be a pilot, you didn't need to be a superhero or super wealthy. Just a little mad, perhaps. Captain de Havilland's Moth brings to life a golden age in aviation and an astonishing cast of characters whose courage, determination and epic eccentricity is shown in the light of what it is actually like to fly these remarkable aeroplanes.

Stahl's Deprescriber's Guide

For decades, psychiatry has focused on initiating treatment—which medication to prescribe, in what dose, and for how long. But what happens when treatment needs to stop? How a medication is stopped is just as important as how it is started, and abrupt discontinuation can lead to unnecessary suffering, relapse, and often preventable withdrawal symptoms. Based on the principles of the bestselling Stahl's Prescriber's Guide, this essential resource provides user-friendly guidance on deprescribing or switching psychotropic medications safely and effectively. 64 medications are presented in a consistent format to facilitate rapid access to deprescribing information. Divided into color coded sections, the book allows the reader to identify key details about when and why to deprescribe, the risks and mechanisms of withdrawal, tapering protocols, cross-titration strategies, and how to distinguish withdrawal symptoms from relapse. Evidence-based recommendations and expert clinical insights make this a must-have manual for all psychiatric prescribers.

World Enemy No. 1

'[An] arresting and deeply researched new book' The New Yorker'Essential reading . . . Hellbeck masterfully explains what made World War II on the Eastern front so destructive and why this matters today. A tour de force' Paul Hanebrink, author of A Specter Haunting EuropeIn the Nazi imagination, the USSR was the most powerful Jewish organization in the world. They called it ‘World Enemy No. 1’. The shocking number of Soviet citizens who lost their lives between 1941 and 1945 – 26 million, more than any other country – is widely known. But the faces and the voices of these victims of Nazism are conspicuously absent. In a pathbreaking new work of history, Jochen Hellbeck restores the USSR to its proper place in the history of the Second World War, arguing that to truly understand the conflict, we must set its axis firmly in Soviet territory. It was not the Western powers but Communist Russia that Nazi Germany viewed as the greatest threat to its existence. The German crusade against ‘Judeo-Bolshevism’ was the driving force of the Nazis’ most extreme violence, and Soviet territory became ground zero for systematic extermination. Only later was this shocking regime of killing extended to all Jews, igniting the Holocaust. Using newly declassified archives, testimonies, diaries and dispatches from soldiers and civilians both Soviet and German, Hellbeck reveals the sheer, untold breadth of terror the Nazis inflicted. This eye-opening masterwork is an astonishing new reading both of the Second World War and of how its history has been told.

Liturgies of the Wild

*INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*‘One of the master storytellers of our time’ – Dr Gabor Maté, author of The Myth of NormalFrom 'one of the greatest storytellers we have' (Robert Bly), an urgent invitation to allow the oldest stories – and the Greatest Story – to reshape our own. There’s an old Irish belief that if you aren’t wrapped in a cloak of story you will be unprepared for what the world will hurl at you. You remain adolescent at just the moment a culture worth its salt requires you to become a real, grown, human being. In Liturgies of the Wild, acclaimed mythographer, storyteller and Christian thinker Martin Shaw argues that we live in a myth-impoverished age, cut off from the deep wells of story and meaning that once prepared us for life’s challenges. Drawing on the 'ancient technologies' of myths and initiatory rites, Shaw invites readers to rediscover the ancient stories that shape the human soul — and to encounter Christ as the ultimate, transforming story providing a road to wholeness, maturity and connection. Within these pages, Shaw:Teaches us to read a myth the way it wants to be read;Provides vivid retellings of tales powerful enough to carry you through life’s travails;Shows you how to gather and reshape your own thrown-away stories. Most vividly, Shaw shares his own spiritual journey and how these ancient technologies led him – unexpectedly – to Christ, 'the True Myth,' by way of a thirty-year journey and a 101-night vigil in a Dartmoor forest. Blending nimble storytelling in the tradition of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien with scholarly depth, Liturgies of the Wild s a thrilling counsel of resistance and delight in the face of many modern monsters, providing a transformative journey into story, spirit and self-discovery. Ebury Vine: The Home Of Christian Living. Drawing on the deep roots of Christianity to cultivate curious minds and inspire faith-informed growth.

Stop Sh*tting Yourself

In this rallying cry for a phlegmatic and fun brand of masculinity, Sam Delaney makes the case for a happier way of living. He proves you don't have to be a wanker to be a winner; and you don't need to be a hippy to be at peace. Understand why consistency is just another word for 'boring'; how process is the enemy of beauty; that rest is a fundamental human right; why male friendships in particular should be rooted in fun, not competitiveness; and that self-acceptance always trumps self-improvement.

Hard Streets

Breathing life into forgotten stories of mothers and sons, labourers and actors, vagrants and sex workers, of suffering, survival and success against the odds, this compelling social history paints a striking portrait of a vanished city.

Contagious Enemies

Witches have existed in society for centuries. Traditionally, they were the midwives, the providers of herbal medicines, the people who understood biology and nature. They were real people who lived amongst you. They were your neighbours – you knew them. But when the Scottish Reformation Party pushed through the Witchcraft Act in 1563, the healers would become the hunted. The Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archive is a treasure trove of documentation, dating as far back as the twelfth century. Amongst its shelves are the original, handwritten court records from the Aberdeen witch trials of 1597 – first-hand accounts of the words spoken on those dreadful days. Covering a brief history of the Scottish witch trials, the role of an obsessed king, and how it all came to an end, Contagious Enemies: The Aberdeen Witch Trials brings you these court records, transcribed and translated into modern day English. None were guilty, few were innocent.
