Civil Blood
Civil Blood is a study of the practice of vendetta among the civic elites in sixteenth-century Italy and illustrates the complex and integral role that vendetta violence played in civic life and state formation on the winding path to state centralization. At many temporal, geographic, and political points in early modern Italy, vendetta appears to have not only disrupted but also constituted the processes by which the modern state emerged. Amanda G. Madden examines vendetta as both central to politics and as an engine of change and illustrates the degree to which key phenomena of the period - state centralization, growing bureaucracies, institutional reforms, and the process of state formation - were interpenetrated by, and not simply opposed to, ongoing factional violence among civic elites. Madden further illuminates in Civil Blood how elites utilized violent enmities to maintain a grip on political control and negotiated with the duke concerning political power and civic prerogatives. As a result, ruling elites not only defined their own place in governance but also shaped the function and definition of government.

Emlyn Hooson and the Welsh Liberal Party, 1962-1979
This study presents an analysis of the Welsh Liberal Party under the leadership of Emlyn Hooson. It begins with an overview of the period prior to Hooson’s 1962 by-election win in Montgomery, following the death of Clement Davies, and the first section describes Hooson’s leadership of the Liberal Party of Wales, his recognition that the organisation was fundamentally flawed and that it needed to be reorganised. The solution was a root and branch reorganisation and the formation of a new state party, which would be federated to the British Liberal Party but separate in its functions and leadership. The second section details Hooson’s steering of the party through chapters on the organisation, policy formation and the electoral record. Monumental Times
This book is concerned with the origins, uses and subsequent histories of monuments. It emphasises the time scales illustrated by these structures, and their implications for archaeological research. It is concerned with the archaeology of Western and Northern Europe, with an emphasis on structures in Britain and Ireland, and the period between the Mesolithic and the Viking Age.It begins with two famous groups of monuments and introduces the problem of multiple time scales. It also considers how they influence the display of those sites today – they belong to both the present and the past. Monuments played a role from the moment they were created, but approaches to their archaeology led in opposite directions. They might have been directed to a future that their builders could not control. These structures could be adapted, destroyed, or left to decay once their significance was lost. Another perspective was to claim them as relics of a forgotten past. In that case they had to be reinterpreted.The first part of this book considers the rarity of monumental structures among hunter-gatherers, and the choice of building materials for Neolithic houses and tombs. It emphasises the difference between structures whose erection ended the use of significant places, and those whose histories could extend into the future. It also discusses ‘megalithic astronomy’ and ancient notions of time. Part Two is concerned with the reuse of ancient monuments and asks whether they really were expressions of social memory. Did links with an ‘ancestral past’ have much factual basis? It contrasts developments during the Beaker phase with those of the early medieval period. The development of monumental architecture is compared with the composition of oral literature.

Best known today for his influential epic poems, the Anticlaudianus and the Complaint of Nature, Alan also composed a theological dictionary, a handbook for preachers, a defense of the catholic faith against the Cathars, and one of the first Marian commentaries on the Song of Songs. Translated here in its entirety for the first time, Alan’s Elucidatio in Cantica Canticorum illumines his other writings and provides a measure for the originality of his Mariology.

The title of this book, ''Eagle Days'', relates to the chosen time period of 8 August to 13 August 1940. This period is after the early convoy battles and attacks on coastal targets which dominated July and the first few days of August. On 8 August, another convoy attack was made but with a difference; a single convoy was repeatedly attacked as it sailed westwards down the Channel, a determined effort to destroy this one convoy and shut the Channel. Hitler’s Führer Directive No. 17 of 1 August 1940 had loosened the reins off the Luftwaffe in its attacks against the United Kingdom; Adlertag was to open the great offensive after the warm-up of July.This widespread set of attacks also included for the first time, raids on inland Fighter Command sector stations as targets, which would continue for much of the rest of the month. Having recently overwhelmed Poland, Denmark, Norway, the Low Countries and France, having sent the British Army back across the Channel from Dunkirk, and having beaten all their opposing air forces other than the RAF, the Germans and the Luftwaffe in particular were dangerously over-confident.The strategic vision and the subtle and functional integrated aerial defence system set up under Air Chief Marshal Dowding’s leadership, and tactically mastered by the 11 Group commander, Air Vice Marshal Park, his 10 Group colleague Air Vice Marshal Sir Quintin Brand and their sector commanders, stands in very stark contrast to the bombast of Reichsmarshall Göring of the Luftwaffe. This week also marks a strangely specialised yet intense struggle involving only part of the forces available to a single Fliegerkorps in Kesselring’s Luftflotte 2 (but all his fighters); Sperrle, his Luftflotte 3 counterpart, along the Channel coast, almost immediately wasted his best bombers in his Ju 88 units in the firm belief that a few days of combat would suffice. He was wrong.

Bloody Streets: Armor, Artillery and Assault Groups in the Battle of Berlin is a comprehensive reference work on armoured warfare during the battle. The Red Army launched their final offensive in Europe with the highest concentration of tanks and self-propelled artillery ever assembled up to that time. Yet, they lost more armour in each day of fighting than during any other battle the Allies fought during World War II. Most of the armour losses inside Berlin were caused by a new German weapon known as the Panzerfaust. The hand-held rocket was employed for the first time in large numbers and revolutionized anti-tank warfare. The new weapon allowed anyone with rudimentary training, no matter their age, to easily destroy the largest armoured vehicle on the battlefield. To ensure the survivability of their tanks and self-propelled artillery, the Red Army evolved the Assault Group concept. The Soviets fundamentally altered the structure of their tank armies and related offensive doctrine in the aftermath of the Battle of Berlin. Many of the lessons learned documented by the Red Army at that time are still relevant to armoured tactics in urban terrain today.This book presents for the first time in English over a hundred pages of Soviet lessons learned on the employment of tanks, self-propelled artillery, artillery pieces, and the evolution of Assault Groups in the Battle of Berlin. German anti-tank tactics are detailed through the observations of the Red Army combat units that fought in the battle. Hundreds of large format wartime black and white photographs of Soviet and German armour and artillery illustrate this book. Each photograph includes a comprehensive description with technical details and historical context. The photographs are supplemented by over a hundred colour profiles, 3D images, and colour photos of surviving examples of the armour that fought in Berlin from both sides. Of particular interest are the graphics that depict the different Assault Group formations that formed across the First Belorussian and First Ukrainian Fronts in order to protect armoured units and overcome determined German resistance. Being Before God
Being before God offers a thorough account of Cornelio Fabro's Thomistic reading of Soren Kierkegaard's theology, speaking both to systematic theology and Kierkegaard studies. Italian Stigmatine priest and Thomist philosopher Cornelio Fabro is well known for his work on the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas. Yet despite also authoring many studies on Soren Kierkegaard, Fabro remains virtually unknown among Kierkegaard scholars outside of Italy. Being before God sheds light on the influence of Kierkegaard's writings on Fabro's Thomism and provides a detailed historical account of Fabro's contributions to Kierkegaard studies and systematic theology. Drawing upon rare archival material, including materials that have never been translated into English, Joshua Furnal speaks to Kierkegaard's relationship to Catholic theology, the Kierkegaardian aspects of Fabro's Thomism, and Fabro's Thomistic approach to Kierkegaard in turn. Being before God also highlights how Fabro's work brings together ideas from both Aquinas and Kierkegaard to broaden the horizon of contemporary theology. Through his meticulous research, Furnal contends that, despite his lack of modern recognition, Fabro remains one of the most important European interpreters of Kierkegaard in the twentieth century.
Warrington at War
By 1938 Warrington, like the rest of Britain, was preparing for war with Germany. From 1939 to 1945 every Warrington man, woman and child was affected by the Second World War whilst the wartime years also shaped the 21st century town. Of those called up to serve in the Armed Forces, many were killed, injured or suffered in captivity as Prisoners of War. Civil Defence Forces were formed to protect Warrington people and property from enemy attacks but all lived through the terror of German air raids. Thousands worked in local factories to produce essential goods, campaigns to Make Do and Mend and Dig For Victory exhorted people to support the war effort and all endured rationing and shortages. Wartime Warrington was the site of key installations including Risley Ordnance Factory, Padgate Camp for training RAF recruits and HMS Blackcap, a Royal Navy Air Station. American GIs from Burtonwood USAAF Airbase became a familiar sight about the town and the noise of engines were heard day and night. VE Day and VJ Day Celebrations marked the end of war but the impact on Warrington had been immense, the postwar New Town was partly created from acres of derelict land on the old wartime bases and Risley Ordnance Factory became a focus for Britain’s atomic development in the Cold War.Warrington at War pays tribute to the people of this town who served, died and lived through the Second World War, and how they managed to endure in the face of the horrors of war. It features contemporary archive material from the collections of Warrington Museum, fascinating stories from the town’s official archives as well as personal history collected by public appeals for wartime memories.
