Emotions in Scottish Protestant Public Worship, 1560-1638
This book explores the affective dimension of Scottish Protestant public worship in early modern Scotland. It examines how the intensely emotional character of Scottish Puritan or godly piety was reflective of the emotional norms many Scots had to navigate in congregational worship following the Protestant Reformation. Using historiographical approaches developed within the history of emotions discipline, the book argues that in corporate rituals such as prayer, preaching, public repentance, fasting and the Lord's Supper, Scottish Protestants were expected to experience and express a variety of feelings that were associated with the cycle of conversion. These prescribed emotions were seen as integral to the efficacy of the liturgy, playing a vital role in the individual's, community's and nation's encounter with God. The book argues that these standards of emotion were informed by medieval, secular and protestant sources and new perspectives emerge on their profound impact upon the major political events that shaped seventeenth century Scotland.
The Way Through The Trees
Throughout history, Christians have reached for a variety of metaphors to try and understand and explain the journey of discipleship. Engaging with faith development styles found in church tradition, this book also offers an important introduction to some of the multiple ways of understanding faith development which predominate today – from the single trajectory approach described by Fowler or Rohr, to the cyclical pattern identified by McLaren. It goes on to suggest a new approach, drawing on the notion of faith development as ‘story’, and progressing to a governing image of faith growth as being akin to a tree grown from seed.
Kirk Discipline and Roman Catholicism in Early Modern Scotland
This book analyses the Scottish kirk’s use of public shame to persecute the kingdom’s Catholic minority. In early modern Scotland, where the national church mandated that a specially constructed stool of repentance be placed directly in front of every minister’s pulpit, the dreadful spectacle of public penance was a routine feature of parish life. The book examines this process of ritualised shame. Drawing on recent advances in the study of kirk discipline, underground Catholicism and the history of emotion, it unsettles understandings of religious persecution. Ryan Burns analyses the psychological pressure inflicted on religious dissidents, some of whom attempted suicide rather than submit to the repentance stool. The book examines the spectacle of public penance, as well as the Presbyterian kirk’s often creative means of inducing humiliation.
Gandhi, Smuts and Race in the British Empire
Towards the end of 1906, a meeting took place between two emerging giants of the age, Mohandas K. Gandhi and General Jan Christian Smuts. United under the same empire, but separated by distance and culture, Smuts was born in the Cape Colony, and Gandhi in Porbandar, a duchy of the Indian province of Gujarat. Both, however, went on to study law in Britain, and while developing a great admiration for the institutions of empire, each man also suffered his own particular crisis of faith. The China Question
For centuries, Western scholars portrayed China either as a land of superior morality, economy, and governance or as a formidable country of pagans that posed a global threat to Western values. Idealized images of China were used to shame rulers for their incompetence, while China was demonized as an external threat to cover up domestic political failures.
