Sceptred Isle

The death of Edward I in 1307 marked the beginning of a period of intense turmoil and change in England. The fourteenth century ushered in the beginning of the bloody Hundred Years' War with France, an epic conflict with Scotland that would last into the sixteenth century, famine in Northern Europe and the largest human catastrophe in known history, the Black Death. Through the epic drama of regicide, war, the prolonged spectre of bubonic plague, religious antagonism, revolt and the end of a royal dynasty, this book tells the story of the fourteenth century via the lives of Edward II, Edward III and Richard II - three very different monarchs, each with their own egos and ambitions, each with their own ideas about England and what it meant to wield power. Alongside the lives of the last Plantagenets, it also uncovers lesser-known voices and untold stories to give a new portrait of a fractured monarchy, the birth of the struggle between Europeanism and nationalism, social rebellion and a global pandemic. Sceptred Isle is a thrilling narrative account of a century of revolution, shifting power and great change - social, political and cultural - shedding new light on a pivotal period of English history and the people who lived it.

Let's Talk About Money

What if the biggest threat to your relationship isn’t infidelity, but instead is your next credit card bill? You can stop arguing and learn how to talk about money. Disagreements about money can quietly erode trust and connection in a relationship, often becoming a major source of stress and even separation. When partners bring different histories, attitudes, and beliefs about money to the table, conflict can escalate quickly. If couples stay stuck in an “us against each other” mindset instead of shifting to “us against the problem,” tension can become chronic. Author, Terry Gaspard shows readers how to break this cycle by teaching practical strategies for having calm, constructive conversations about finances. Her approach helps partners communicate effectively, reduce conflict, and build a stronger, more harmonious relationship.

Open Socrates

Socrates has been hiding in plain sight. We call him the father of Western philosophy, but what exactly are his philosophical views? He is famous for his humility, but readers often find him arrogant and condescending. We parrot his claim that 'the unexamined life is not worth living,' yet take no steps to live examined ones. We know that he was tried, convicted, and executed for 'corrupting the youth,' but freely assign Socratic dialogues to today's youths, to introduce them to philosophy. We've lost sight of what made him so dangerous. In Open Socrates, acclaimed philosopher Agnes Callard recovers the radical energy at the centre of Socrates' thought and shows why it is still the way to a good life. Callard draws our attention to Socrates' startling discovery that we don't know how to ask ourselves the most important questions- about how we should live, and how we might change. Before a person even has a chance to reflect, their bodily desires or the forces of social conformity have already answered on their behalf. To ask the most important questions, we need help. Callard argues that the true ambition of the famous "Socratic method" is to reveal what one human being can be to another. You can use another person in many ways-for survival, for pleasure, for comfort- but you are engaging them to the fullest when you call on them to help answer your questions and challenge your answers. Here Callard shows that Socrates' method allows us to make progress in thinking about how to manage romantic love, how to confront one's own death, and how to approach politics. In the process, she gives us nothing less than a new ethics to live by.

A Training School for Elephants

From the award-winning author of The Lost Pianos of Siberia comes a new journey, following four 19th century elephants marched from the East African coast towards Congo to tell a heartbreaking story of folly and colonial greed. INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERWINNER OF THE STANFORD'S TRAVEL WRITING BOOK OF THE YEAR 2026WAINWRIGHT PRIZE FOR WRITING ON CONSERVATION 2025 SHORTLISTEDBest Summer Books of 2025: An illuminating tale of imperial ambition and ineptitude.' FINANCIAL TIMES'A beautiful, intelligent and heartfelt book, a brilliantly researched account of an imperial fever dream alongside a no less feverish contemporary journey' THE SUNDAY TIMES'History and travelogue combine wonderfully in this tale of colonial plunder and hubris.' GUARDIANIn 1879, King Leopold II of Belgium launched an ambitious plan to plunder Africa’s resources. The key to cracking open the continent, or so he thought, was its elephants ? if only he could train them. And so he commissioned the charismatic Irish adventurer Frederick Carter to ship four tamed Asian elephants from India to the East African coast, where they were marched inland towards Congo. The ultimate aim was to establish a training school for African elephants. Following in the footsteps of the four elephants, Roberts pieces together the incredible true story of this long-forgotten expedition, in travels that take her to Belgium, Iraq, India, Tanzania and Congo. The storytelling brings to life a compelling cast of historic characters and modern voices, from ivory dealers to Catholic nuns, set against rich descriptions of the landscapes travelled. Digging deep into historic records to reckon with our broken relationship with animals, Training School for Elephants reveals an extraordinary and enduring story of colonial greed, ineptitude, hypocrisy and folly. Praise for Training School for Elephants:'This is a marvellous book, an important footnote to history - of Sophy Roberts' intrepid travel with a real purpose, shining a light on colonialism, Belgian and British, and their peculiar obsessions.’' - Paul Theroux, author of The Great Railway Bazaar ‘Masterfully weaving adventure, intrigue and the darker truths of colonial ambition into a story as gripping as it is eye-opening.’ - Levison Wood, author of Walking the Nile'Deeply researched. Brings to life a bizarre and long-forgotten story of Africa with empathy, intriguing encounters and memorable characters, not least the elephants themselves.’ - Luke Pepera, author of Motherland: A Journey through 500,000 Years of African Culture and Identity‘Sophy Roberts brings history to life, tackling difficult, sensitive subjects with careful, exquisite prose. The best sort of travel writing: handsome prose, teeming with humanity and an unwavering sense of wonder.' - Justin Marozzi, author of Baghdad, City of Peace, City of Blood ‘A cautionary tale from the early days of the Scramble for Africa, but poignant and scholarly too. Roberts writes beautifully.’ - Thomas Pakenham, author of The Scramble for Africa‘A rich, engrossing tapestry of greed and disregard for life … Few write as compellingly as Roberts, this is her as only she can write.’ - Amal Chatterjee, author of Across the Lakes

The Unraveled Plot

Explores the connection between Jean-Luc Nancy's political works on community and his works on art and literature, thus providing not only a comprehensive introduction into Nancy’s work but also a broader examination of the social and political role of literature. What is the connection between the work of community and the work of literature? And in what way is literature implied in Jean-Luc Nancy's "inoperative" community? The Unraveled Plot investigates the relation between two domains that have only separately been addressed in the reception of Nancy's work: his political works on community on the one hand and his works on art and literature on the other. Lucidly traversing Nancy's entire oeuvre, Aukje van Rooden offers not only a comprehensive introduction into Nancy’s work but also a much broader reflection on the social and political role of literature. Situating Nancy's thought within a larger philosophical tradition leading from German Romanticism to contemporary social and political theory, she offers new insights, with and beyond Nancy, on the forming of communities and how literature can play a role.

Keep Your Hair On

Blending science and lived experience, this book offers a compassionate, stigma-busting exploration of body-focused repetitive behaviours (BFRBs) - revealing why they happen, why they bother us, and how understanding them may be the key to healing. Keep Your Hair On combines personal experience with scientific inquiry to explore the misunderstood world of hair pulling, skin picking and nail biting. These behaviours are fairly common and can cause a lot of distress, but have been largely neglected by medical science, leaving many to suffer in silence. Neuroscientist Clare Mackay shares her own four-decade struggle with hair pulling, while examining what drives these behaviours and why they can make people feel so bad. Drawing on psychology, neuroscience, animal behaviour, dermatology and lived experience, she challenges the stigma and oversimplified assumptions surrounding BFRBs. Mackay offers compassionate insights into why these behaviours develop, why they're so hard to stop, and how shame compounds the struggle. Rather than promoting quick fixes, she encourages understanding over judgement and introduces new avenues for management, including the power of self-compassion. This is not a self-help manual, but it may help - by reframing BFRBs not as signs of personal failure, but as interesting, deeply human behaviours that deserve curiosity, care and connection.
