The Crimean War at Sea
Too often historical writing on the Russian War of 1854-56 focuses narrowly on the land campaign fought in the Crimean peninsula in the Black Sea. The wider war waged at sea by the British and French navies against the Russians is ignored. The allied navies aimed to strike at Russian interests anywhere in the world where naval force could be brought to bear and as a result campaigns were waged in the Baltic, the Black Sea, the White Sea, on the Russian Pacific coast and in the Sea of Azoff. Yet it is the land campaign in the Crimea that shapes our understanding of events. In this graphic and original study, Peter Duckers seeks to set the record straight. He shows how these neglected naval campaigns were remarkably successful, in contrast to the wretched failures that beset the British army on land. Allied warships ranged across Russian waters sinking shipping, disrupting trade, raiding ports, bombarding fortresses, destroying vast quantities of stores and shelling coastal towns. The scale and intensity of the naval operations embarked upon during the war are astonishing, and little appreciated, and this new book offers the first overall survey of them.
Miners and the Great War
At the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, despite many difficulties and falling manpower, coalmining was the most important industry in Great Britain. It employed around a million persons in well over 3,000 pits ranging from small hillside drift mines with a few hands to substantial collieries with workforces and pit communities the size of villages and small towns. A few months into the conflict, Lloyd George in a patriotic speech to a coal conference proclaimed that coal was ''everything for us, the country''s life and blood, its international coinage''.As well as digging coal for the war effort, often in dreadful and dangerous conditions, miners demonstrated ''their old work in a new guise'' when serving in huge numbers during the Great War. Thousands voluntarily swapped the pit for what many thought would be a better and safer option, around a quarter of a million enlisting by 1915; and about one in five of all military volunteers came from the coalfields of England, Scotland and Wales, an astonishing proportion. The massive response to the Call for Arms was most obvious in industrial areas where the so-called ''Pals battalions'' were established and it was these recruits who suffered so heavily during the disastrous Somme offensive of 1916. The sheer number and range of gallantry awards including several VCs - also testify to the immense contribution of former miners.The many thousands of pitmen who paid the ultimate price are inscribed on public war memorials in coalfield communities, often dominating the listings. Such was the response from large pits that many others are commemorated on memorials specially erected by colliery and coal companies, one the earliest in the village of Brampton in South Yorkshire on behalf of Cortonwood Colliery.Whether working below and above ground at collieries or as part of the armed forces, miners played a very significant role during the Great War of 1914-18, a total contribution that deserves to be told.

Ak daňovník zistí chybu v podanom daňovom priznaní, môže podať opravné alebo dodatočné daňové priznanie. Problematiku opravných a dodatočných daňových priznaní upravuje § 16 zákona č. 563/2009 Z. z. o správe daní (daňový poriadok).
Medzi opravným a dodatočným daňovým priznaním sú tieto zásadné rozdiely:
– opravné daňové priznanie sa podáva pred uplynutím lehoty na podanie daňového priznania. Splatnosť dane je v lehote na podanie daňového priznania. Ak sa opravným daňovým priznaním zvyšuje daňová povinnosť, rozdiel medzi pôvodne priznanou daňou a vyššou daňou uvedenou v opravnom daňovom priznaní nepodlieha žiadnym sankciám;
– dodatočné daňové priznanie sa podáva zásadne po uplynutí lehoty na podanie daňového priznania. Lehota na podanie dodatočného daňového priznania je určená zákonom, v lehote na podanie dodatočného daňového priznania je daň aj splatná...

Charles II’s Portuguese Queen
Catherine of Braganza has regularly been referred to as ‘the forgotten queen’ and there is much truth in this statement. The last major bio published about her was in Portuguese in 1941 and it has never been translated into English. Despite her sheltered and religious upbringing, she made a spectacular marriage that was plagued by the infidelities of her husbands. In 1983, Grenada, a small Commonwealth Island in the Caribbean, had strong ties with Communist Cuba. Bernard Coard and a group of hard-line Marxist-Leninists overthrew the unelected Prime Minister Maurice Bishop and then executed Bishop and his entourage.President Ronald Reagan displayed a paranoic concern as he believed that, in Grenada, Cuba was building a powerful military base. To eliminate what he saw as a threat, he resolved to initiate regime change in Grenada. Bývanie v čase kríz / Housing in Times of Crisis
Ako sa dá hovoriť o bývaní v Európe, kde sa bytová politika čoraz viac podriadila logike trhu a čoraz menej sa opiera o starostlivosť a solidaritu? Hannibal's Road
Many books have been written on the Second Punic War and Hannibal in particular but few give much space to his campaigns in the years from 213 203 BC. Most studies concentrate on Hannibals series of stunning victories in the early stages of the war, culminating at Cannae in 216 BC, then refocus on the activities of his nemesis ,Scipio Africanus, in Spain until the two meet in the final showdown at Zama. But this has led to the neglect of some of the Carthaginian genius most remarkable campaigns. By 212 the wider war was definitely going against the Carthaginians. Yet Hannibal, despite being massively outnumbered and with little support from home, was able to sustain his polyglot army and campaign actively across southern Italy for another ten years. His skilful manoeuvring and victory in numerous engagements kept several veteran armies of the normally aggressive Romans tied up and on the defensive, until Scipios invasion of North Africa pulled him home to defend Carthage. Mike Roberts follows the course of these remarkable events in detail, analysing Hannibals strategy and aims in this phase of the war and revealing a genius that had lost none of its lustre in adversity.

Epitaphs of Bomber Command
During the Second World War Royal Air Force Bomber Command suffered unprecedented casualty rates. Those who served, were killed, and were found, now rest in Commonwealth War Graves Commission graves across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe. Of these, almost 30,000 headstones bear emotive and poignant epitaphs, chosen by the next of kin, which, in varied ways, express their loss. Some families selected literary quotes or decided upon a phrase in Latin or other language. Many wished to reflect the sacrifice made in confronting the enemy, in defence of their country, or the sacrifice of a pilot who stayed at the controls of his aircraft to save his crew. Other families referenced siblings of the airmen, who were similarly lost. There were those who chose mild humour. Often the epitaph would mention the wife and children of the casualty, or the bereaved may have selected a phrase from the last letter they received from their loved one. Others found, in their hearts, their own words. In Epitaphs of Bomber Command Steve Darlow and Dave Gilbert select one hundred epitaphs, providing further detail about the respective casualty, along with an insight into the words chosen for the inscriptions. Words that were restricted by a war graves commission limit on the number of letters.This collection, published eighty years after the end of the Second World War and specific to RAF Bomber Command, provides a direct and sombre insight into the cost of war at a personal level. ‘We Will Remember Them’.
God as Nothing
This eloquent new book of philosophical theology challenges and aims to remedy the underlying assumption of both believers and atheists that their arguments depend on proof that God either exists or doesn’t exist. It is a controversy conducted in misleading terms – as if atheists believed in all the things that exist in the universe, and theists also believed in all those beings but also believed in one additional being which they call ‘God’.A much more useful enquiry about ‘God’, suggests Gilbert Márkus, is ‘Why does anything exist, rather than nothing?’ If God created everything that exists, according to a very ancient tradition, God cannot be one of the things that exist. God is no thing. Or Nothing.In God as Nothing, Márkus traces the history of this idea through the long development of the Jewish and Christian philosophical and literary tradition. He identifies it in the Bible, in the thought of Augustine, Aquinas and Eckhart, and in the poetry of R.S. Thomas and Paul Celan. He explores its significance in relation to Hegel, Feuerbach and Marx. In the second part of the book, he shines the ‘single white light’ of the idea through various prisms, to help all of us divine further enlightenment in the refractions that emerge.
The Advance on Caen
The COSSAC planners in 1943 outlined a strategy to capture the city of Caen, some 10 miles in-land from the coastline with an airborne division. On assumption of command of 21st Army Group, General Montgomery up-scaled the invasion and inserting SWORD Beach, gave the task of capturing the city to the 3rd Division on D Day or shortly afterwards. The Germans, however, seeing the number of Allied divisions, many fictional, multiplying on their situation maps, believed that a secondary landing would be made in Normandy. In April 1944, they therefore made significant reinforcements including moving the 21st Panzer Division to the important transport node of Caen that, if held, barred the way onto the more open country south to Falaise.Though aware of the German reinforcement thanks to ULTRA, the Allied aspiration remained to capture Caen and fix the Germans against the British Second Army on the eastern flank of the lodgement. In doing so, it became obvious that the city would not be captured as quickly or cleanly as originally envisaged.On D Day, the 3rd Division faced not just the coastal crust of defences, but German formations deployed in depth, including the 21st Panzer Division barring the way to Caen. Beset with difficulties resulting from Eisenhower’s decision to ‘go’ in less-than-ideal conditions, the landing was slow and the division could not develop the necessary momentum to carry them to the city.
Death in Derry
When civil rights protests in the 1960s gave way to armed struggle, the Provisional IRA in Derry ? both city and county ? led the fight against the British security forces. In the city Martin McGuinness ? a young butcher? s assistant from the Bogside ? quickly rose through the ranks, launching a bombing campaign that reduced the city centre to rubble. In tandem, the IRA? s active service units fought the British Army in the streets and alleys of the Bogside, Creggan, Shantallow and the Waterside. Out in the townlands, a new generation from the county? s traditional republican families waged an equally ruthless war against their neighbours in the RUC and UDR. The Derry Brigade? s success would help propel McGuinness to the very top of the IRA? s Army Council.By the early 1980s the Derry Brigade appeared untouchable. However, in reality, Special Branch and British Intelligence had infiltrated it from top to bottom and almost destroyed the brigade. By the mid-1990s its war was all but over, its ranks decimated by death and incarceration. This is the story of that war told by those from all sides who survived it.
