Edvard Munch: A Poem of Life, Love and Death

An authoritative new publication that revisits Edvard Munch’s work in its entirety. Edvard Munch occupies a pivotal place in artistic modernity. His work is permeated by a singular vision of the world, with a powerful symbolist dimension that goes beyond the masterpieces he created in the 1890s. For Munch, humanity and nature were united in the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, which is reflected in the recurrence of certain motifs and color combinations in his work. He wrote: “These paintings, which are, admittedly, relatively difficult to understand, will be...easier to grasp if they are integrated into a whole.” Published to accompany a major exhibition at the Musée d’Orsay, Edvard Munch: A Poem of Life, Love and Death presents about a hundred works?paintings, drawings, prints, and engraved blocks?reflecting the diversity of Munch’s practice. Seven essays explore the artist in his philosophical and scientific milieu and the places that shaped the man and his art, as well as offering a rare glimpse of Munch’s attempts at creative writing. They also examine the historical evolution of his monumental Frieze of Life series and the world-famous Scream. This publication invites readers to revisit the painter’s work in its entirety by following the thread of an ever-inventive pictorial thinking: a vision that is both fundamentally coherent, even obsessive, and at the same time constantly renewed. 180 color illustrations

Gustav Klimt: The Interiors

This unique and utterly fascinating appreciation of Gustav Klimt's oeuvre reveals some of his most famous works in their original settings and offers valuable historic insight into his artistic vision. Interior design was supremely important to Gustav Klimt, and many of his paintings were created for specific settings or spaces. This aspect of Klimt's practice comes beautifully to life in this book that illustrates how some of the artist's most beloved canvases appeared in situ-in private dining rooms and salons, galleries, museums, and public exhibition spaces. Works such as the portraits of Emilie Flöge and Hermine Gallia, the shocking Nuda Veritas, and landscapes A Morning by the Pond and The Tall Poplar I are presented in double-page spreads. Full-color reproductions of paintings by Klimt are juxtaposed with black-and-white vintage photographs of the original interiors with the featured paintings overlaid in color. Thoughtful and personal texts by Klimt scholar Tobias Natter accompany each spread, providing invaluable contextual insight about how these pictures were conceived as part of the interior design of their respective rooms and spaces, and the passionate collectors who first owned these pictures. Meticulously produced and packaged, this book provides a refreshing perspective on Klimt's oeuvre and artistic vision.

Niko Pirosmani

A Legendary Artist Revisited Unknown to many, Niko Pirosmani is revered as a legend in his native Georgia. Conveying a sense of poignant empathy, his portraits, animal paintings, landscapes and scenes from everyday life painted around 1900 in a flourishing Tbilisi draw on medieval iconography and testify to a deeply felt sense of belonging. At the same time, the avant-garde recognised a novel and radically new form of painting in his work. Like Henri Rousseau or Marc Chagall, Pirosmani is one of the exceptional yet difficult to categorize proponents of early modern art. This catalogue demonstrates Pirosmani's qualities in numerous illustrations, showing how his rapid brushstrokes on black oilcloth give the sparsely applied colors a glow as if coming from a dark depth. Pirosmani was a master of concentration-and a storyteller. As expertly explained in the catalogue by a selection of Georgian art historians, he was a unique artist, a contradictory figure and an important part of the art scene in Tbilisi, then considered the "Paris of the East."

Ikonikus festőművészeket, furcsa sorsú paloták történeteit, a színházi világ változásait és a kasztráltak szárnyaló dalnoki népszerűségét is megidézzük a könyv lapjain. Hogyan esett jókora késésbe a velencei közkönyvtár építése?

Earthly Delights: A History of the Renaissance

A Sunday Times Art Book of the Year: written by one of the UK's foremost art critics, this new narrative history of the Renaissance takes in the whole of Europe and its global context. What was the 'Renaissance'? In the nineteenth century this flowering of creativity and thought was celebrated as the birth of the modern world. Today many historians are sceptical about its very existence. Earthly Delights rekindles the Renaissance as a seismic change in European mentalities, in a panoramic history that encompasses Florence and Bruges, London and Nuremberg. Artists from northern as well as southern Europe, including Leonardo, Bosch, Bruegel and Titian, star in a captivating and beautifully illustrated narrative that sets their lives against a period of convulsive change across a continent that was finding itself as it 'discovered' the world. Art critic and writer Jonathan Jones tells the story of Renaissance artists as pioneers, adventurers and 'geniuses', a Renaissance concept. Albrecht Dürer gazes with wonder on Aztec art in Brussels in 1520, Leonardo da Vinci tries to perfect a flying machine, Hieronymus Bosch finds inspiration in West African ivory carvings imported by the Portuguese to Antwerp. A then unknown Netherlandish painter, Pieter Bruegel, arrives in 1550s Rome just as Michelangelo is striving in the same city to raise the new St Peter's Basilica towards heaven. From Atlantic voyages to Germanic woods, Italian palazzi to the royal castle of Prague, this was an age when people dared to experiment with the occult and dabble in utopias: to think and create new worlds.

Tizenkét császár

Hogyan fest a hatalom arca?

An Atlas of Es Devlin

An Atlas of Es Devlin, the first monograph on artist Es Devlin's genre-defying practice, is an experiential publication encompassing art, activism, theatre, poetry, music, dance, opera and sculpture. Publisher's note: Our first print run of The Atlas of Es Devlin has sold through in record time and we are currently reprinting. Further copies will become available in December with more stock then due in early 2024. Devlin's protean work is rooted in a life-long practice of reading and drawing. From sketches in the margins of texts, be they poetry, drama, song lyrics, opera libretti, climate reports or endangered species lists, emerge the technically advanced, collectively imagined universes for which she is globally renowned. Fragile miniature paintings, paper cuts and small mechanical cardboard models form the seeds of some of the most iconic, large-scale, multi-disciplinary cultural manifestations in recent times, from public sculptures and installations at Tate Modern, Serpentine, V&A, Barbican, Imperial War Museum and the Lincoln Center, to kinetic stage designs at the Royal Opera House, the Royal Ballet, the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala and the National Theatre, as well as Olympic Ceremonies, Super-Bowl half-time shows, and monumental illuminated stage sculptures for Beyonce, The Weeknd, U2, Rosalía, Dr Dre and Kendrick Lamar. Devlin's work is at once deeply personal and inherently collective. Over the past decade her art practice has engaged with biodiversity, linguistic diversity and collective AI-generated poetry. She views the audience as a temporary society and encourages profound cognitive shifts by inviting public participation in communal choral works. Published in association with a retrospective exhibition opening at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York in November 2023, An Atlas of Es Devlin is a unique, sculptural volume of over 900 pages, including foldouts, cut-outs, and a range of paper types, mirror and translucencies, with over 700 colour images documenting over 120 projects spanning over 30 years, and a 50,000 word text featuring the artist's personal commentaries on each art work as well as interviews with her collaborators including Hans Ulrich Obrist, Bono, Benedict Cumberbatch, Pharrell Williams, Carlo Rovelli, Brian Eno, Sam Mendes, Alice Rawsthorn and Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye. Each book is boxed and includes a die-cut print from an edition of 5000.

Encounters with Artists

Personal encounters with some of the world’s most influential modern and contemporary artists by leading art critic and writer Richard Cork. In Encounters with Artists , Richard Cork turns his impeccable skills as a critic and writer to tell the story of his encounters with some of the world’s most influential artists. From a serendipitous meeting with Pablo Picasso in Cannes in 1965 through his early days as a writer on the Evening Standard and his later role as chief art critic for The Times , Cork records the personal encounters that reveal the characters behind the art. From individuals who can look back over a lifetime’s career, such as Louise Bourgeois, Roy Lichtenstein, and Jasper Johns, to younger artists encountered at the beginning of their careers, such as Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst, Cork reveals artists’ inner thoughts, anxieties, and creative ambitions. From a studio meeting with Lucian Freud to being driven through the Yorkshire countryside by David Hockney and given a tour of Soho drinking locations with Francis Bacon, Cork has found that “talking to artists can, in my experience, be surprising, revealing, salutary, testing, provocative, stimulating, and at times capable of overturning all my preconceptions about the individuals I encounter.” Cork has played a significant role in popularizing late modern and contemporary art. In the words of art critic Louisa Buck, his “lucid, evenhanded and at times trenchantly critical judgement has been invaluable in helping to create the multiplicity of approach and vigorous debates of today’s artistic climate.” 1 black-and-white illustration

Astonish Me!

Astonish Me! is an adrenaline-charged rollercoaster through history's seismic first nights, exploring how individual artists can change and shape the story of culture - and allow us to see ourselves in new ways. It tells of times when 'the air between people seems to alter' as art achieves profound change, across the globe and across history. Dominic Dromgoole has created a radical and fresh canon. He begins in New York in 1963, as Lorraine Hansberry remakes American theatre and a nation's perception of race. And then, as the lights go up, we find ourselves in Renaissance Florence, watching Michelangelo's David being hauled into the Piazza della Signoria. The dust settles and we are transported to the birth of theatre in fifth-century Athens - and then to Paris to meet with Diaghilev and Stravinsky for the Rite of Spring. We witness kabuki's creation, as a radical women's performance, in Kyoto; the Sex Pistols shattering Thatcherite Britain at Manchester's Free Trade Hall; and watch as Hitchcock directs Psycho.
