Alexander Calder: Modern from the Start
On Alexander Calder's fruitful, creative and enduring relationship with MoMA, from the early wire sculptures to late abstractions
Alexander Calder's work first appeared in the Museum of Modern Art's galleries in 1930, in the exhibition Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans. Over the next decades the artist's connection with the Museum would be deep, productive and mutually beneficial. Calder cultivated friendships and working relationships with notable figures, including Alfred H. Barr Jr., the Museum's founding director, and James Johnson Sweeney, with whom he collaborated on his expansive retrospective exhibition in 1943. His work is imprinted on MoMA's early history, not only for its material and conceptual innovation but also for its presence at significant moments, such as a mobile made to hang over the lobby's grand staircase on the occasion of the new Goodwin and Stone building (Lobster Trap and Fish Tail, which hangs there to this day); an elaborate candelabra to adorn the tables at a celebratory anniversary event; and a sculpture to fly off a flagpole to advertise the landmark exhibition Cubism and Abstract Art. Alexander Calder: Modern from the Start celebrates this extraordinarily fertile relationship between an institution and an artist who was both an important creative partner and, with his magnificent gift of 19 works in 1966, a major donor. Through MoMA, Calder came to be known as a pioneer of modern sculpture, and through Calder, MoMA came to understand itself as an American museum of modern art. After studying engineering, Alexander Calder (1898-1976) moved to Paris in the late 1920s, where he found himself at the center of the city's artistic avant-garde. There, he developed his Cirque Calder, a performance artwork comprising dozens of miniature handmade objects, and a group of standalone figurative works in wire. Turning toward abstraction in 1930, Calder invented the mobile--an abstract sculpture made of independent parts that incorporate natural or mechanical movement. He would continue to explore the possibilities of this visual language for the rest of his career, eventually shifting to monumental constructions and public works.

No sculptor or painter was able to depict man more impressively in stone and colour; his grandiose masterpieces are still world-famous today.

Palo Macho (1965) patrí k výrazným predstaviteľom súčasného umeleckého skla. Jeho špecifická pozícia v tejto disciplíne je v tom, že sa dlhoročne venuje maľbe na sklo. Prepája farby so sklom (jeho povrchom) na podobných princípoch, ako je tomu v klasickej maľbe. Nemá však k dispozícii plátno, ale sklenenú platňu, nie farby, ktorých tóny vidí okamžite, ale sklárske emaily, listre a drahé kovy, ktoré svoj výsledný odtieň vydajú až potom, čo prejdú taviacim a vypaľovacím procesom v sklárskej peci. Maľba má niekoľko vrstiev: podmaľba sa prekrýva s vnútornou maľbou i s maľbou na povrchu. Aj preto musí byť všetko vopred vymyslené, naplánované, overené. Neoddeliteľnou súčasťou je autorské gesto, dotyk ako stopa ruky, štetca, špachtle... Machove maľby na skle, kde sa hmota, objem a plocha skla spájajú s farbou a autonómnym maliarskym podaním, sú zvláštnym druhom maliarstva. K všetkým týmto výrazovým prostriedkom pristupuje ešte jeden aktívny a kľúčový prvok transparentnosť sklenej tabule a s ňou aj svetlo, ktoré je schopné meniť, dotvárať a oživovať vnímanie jeho diel. Druhé vydanie reprezentačnej monografie predstavuje Machovu tvorbu slovom a obrazom: jeho dielom vás sprevádzajú historičky umenia Katarína Bajcurová a Sylva Petrová, ktoré vo svojich textoch osvetľujú princípy jeho uvažovania a tvorby, ako aj miesto v širších medzinárodných kontextoch súčasného skla. Full of surprising anecdotes, this book tells the story of the discovery in 2018 that one of only two known photographs of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) is, in fact, of his brother, Theo. The detective-style narrative continues from there to Samuel Delsaut, who found two drawings attributed to Van Gogh in 1958. The archives of the Delsaut family revealed details casting doubt on the authenticity of these drawings, along with abundant correspondence between Samuel's son and the son of Dr. Paul Gachet, who cared for Van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise. A real-life lesson in historical criticism, this book, beautifully illustrated with reproductions of Van Gogh's work, has resonance with our contemporary predicament distinguishing information from rumor, journalism from propaganda.

Hoci meno Karola Ondreičku staršieho rezonuje v povedomí kultúrnej verejnosti, s výnimkou výtvarného diela sa veľa dokladov o účinkovaní tohto umelca nezachovalo. Ondreičkovou tvorbou sa síce zaoberá každá štúdia alebo publikácia z dejín moderného umenia na Slovensku, ale vždy je to len niekoľko málo tých istých diel z jedného obdobia tvorby. Kurátori Aurel Hrabušický a Silvia Ilečková sa rozhodli predstaviť život a dielo maliara a grafika Karola Ondreičku podrobnejšie a odhaliť tak polohy, v akých tohto predstaviteľa slovenskej moderny nepoznáme.
The Picasso Connection

Hailed as one of the most influential and expressive painters of the seventeenth century, Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-ca. 1656) has figured prominently in the art historical discourse of the past two decades. Over the past 35 years, husband-and-wife collector duo Rose-Marie and Eijk van Otterloo have acquired an unparalleled private collection of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings, representing a selection of work by the Dutch Golden Age's most important artists. This volume compiles some two dozen masterworks from the van Otterloo Collection, which was donated by the couple to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2017, as one of the most generous gifts in the museum's history. Included among these visually splendid paintings is one of the world's best-preserved Rembrandts, previously housed in a private collection: his 1632 piece Portrait of Aeltje Uylenburgh, which depicts its elderly sitter in dark robes and a delicate white millstone collar. Publikace Jiřího Sozanského je bohatě ilustrovaná jeho díly od 70.tých let minulého století až po nejnovější práce. Textová část, která je rozsáhlá, zahrnuje vzpomínky autora na dětství a dospívání v období totality, jeho postoje a umělecký vývoj, neodmyslitelné od občanského postoje.
Významný je textový a výtvarný obraz matky zpřítomňovaný touto knížkou, který nenaplňuje běžná očekávání, jaké by mohlo být vzpomínání na matku; většina záznamů navíc přesahuje téma matky a života s matkou, dětství, dospívání, jde více o záznamy profesního života v dobách nepříznivých, či méně nepříznivých, který začal před vytouženým a vybojovaným vstupem na AVU. Matka v knížce není záchrana, idylická síla, sentimentální vzpomínka. Je to existující fakt života, nejde jej odmítnout, ani překročit, ani idealizovat. Přesto je kniha poctou matce.

Publikácia je nominovaná na výročnú cenu časopisu Pamiatky a múzeá 2020. Vydaniu
katalógu predchádzala rovnomenná výstava, nad ktorou prevzalo záštitu Britské veľvyslanectvo na
Slovensku. Aj tento edičný projekt bol podporený z verejných zdrojov Fondom na podporu umenia.
Slovenský text vrátane registrov a konkordancie sprevádza anglický preklad. Zahŕňa všetky
grafické diela vo fonde galérie, ktoré s Britskými ostrovmi spája autor predlohy, rytec alebo
vydavateľ. Sú zoradené v súvislostiach, ktoré naznačila štruktúra zbierky, teda sčasti chronologicky,
sčasti tematicky, resp. vzhľadom na žáner. Najstaršie listy pochádzajú z knižného vydania
Vergíliových veršov v anglickom preklade Johna Drydena z roku 1697. Ďalším relatívne uceleným
súborom grafických listov je sedem vedút s najvýznamnejšími architektonickými dielami v Dubline
od dielo popredného írskeho grafika a rytca Jamesa Maltona, ktoré vytvoril v 90. rokoch 18.
storočia. V kolekcii však prevládajú portréty. Ilustrujú dejiny ostrovnej monarchie v dobe, keď
vznikli. To bol účel, pre ktorý ich v 19. storočí vydával Hermann Julis Meyer ako súčasť
populárnych konverzačných príručiek. Pozornosť však treba obrátiť najmä na veľký grafický list,
reprodukujúci podobizeň vojvodkyne z Devonshiru od Joshua Reynoldsa. Katalóg voľne nadväzuje
na katalóg talianskej grafiky z roku 2019. Na záver vysvetlenie: zelená farba obálky je farbou
zberateľskej pečiatky Ernesta Zmetáka.

Monografie jednoho z nejvýraznějších sochařů výtvarné generace, která vstupuje do veřejného prostoru od devadesátých let. Michal Trpák (1982) hledá nejrůznější formy vyjádření a jako umělec i úspěšný organizátor obohacuje městskou krajinu, veřejné i soukromé interiéry překvapivými, nápaditými objekty. Od roku 2008 připravuje letní plenérové výstavy Umění ve městě, které se z Českých Budějovic postupně rozšiřují do dalších jihočeských měst.
