Kahlo
Frida Kahlo's arresting pictures were in many ways expressions of trauma. The daughter of an immigrant German photographer father and a Mexican mother of Indian origin, Kahlo (1907-1954) was involved in a serious road accident at the age of 18, which left her with lifelong health problems, including the inability to have a child. This richly illustrated Basic Art book offers a both accessible and informed introduction to Kahlo's life and work, looking at the artist's dramatic, colourful canvases which combined religious Mexican tradition with Surrealist elements. These paintings can be seen as reflections both of Kahlo's physical distress and of her volatile marriage to world-famous mural painter Diego Rivera - a tumultuous relationship fraught with furious tempers, numerous extra marital affairs, divorce, and remarriage. Many works also explore the Communist political ideals Kahlo and Rivera shared. Kahlo's work received posthumous recognition in the late 1970s and was declared the property of the Mexican state in 1983. Today, she is considered one of the most important 20th-century painters, a feminist icon, and a pioneer of Latin American art.

Bosch
If Hieronymus Bosch (1450-1516) remains an enigma today, it is little wonder. Even his contemporaries found the Netherlandish painter's work difficult to Decipher - and it still presents riddles to contemporary art historians. Part of the problem in decoding his shocking and richly allegorical paintings is that virtually nothing is known of the artist himself, apart from his birthplace. There is no record of his life or training, no personal letters, diaries or notebooks, and no contemporary insights into his personality or thoughts on the meaning of his art. Even his date of birth can only be guessed at, and that based on a drawing assumed to be a self-portrait, made shortly before his death in 1516, which supposedly shows the artist in his late sixties. Bosch remains as mysterious as the worlds he painted. Although rooted in the Old Netherlandish tradition, Bosch developed a highly subjective, richly suggestive formal language. With a mixture of religious humility and satanic wit, he illustrated both the joys of heaven and the cruelly imaginative tortures of hell. In his pictorial world teeming with surrealistic nightmares, the medieval imagination catches fire in a moment of final brilliance before succumbing to humanism and modern rationalism. Jde o esej, shrnujíci rozhovory mezi historikem umění Tomášem Vlčkem a současným významným umělcem Karlem Malichem během jejich dlouholetého přátelství. Autor rekapituluje, co pro něj přátelství s Karlem Malichem znamená a co jej umožňovalo. Zmiňuje některé motivy Malichova tvůrčího myšlení, které by jinak mohly být opomenuty. Obrazový doprovod knihy tvoří jednak kresby Karla Malicha, jednak fotografie Tomáše Vlčka, který zachytil umělcova díla v době jejich dokončení. Vzhledem k tomu, že některá z těchto děl již neexistují, jde o unikátní dokumentární snímky.

Anna Galková a Anton Galko, akademickí maliari, stretli sa počas svojich štúdií na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení v Bratislave ( 1949 – 1951 ) a v Prahe na Vysokej škole výtvarných umení,kde študovali pod vedením profesora V.Sychra ( 1951-1954/1955). Žijú v Bratislave od roku 1955, kedy sa stali manželským párom. Ich celoživotné dielo je zamerané na komornú maľbu – portréty, figurálne kompozície, krajinárske motívy i zátišia. Ich rané dielo sa dotýka kresieb, grafického dizajnu a monumentálnych realizácií.

Publikace byla vydána jako obvykle k posledně proběhlému, tentokrát 21. Mikulovskému výtvarnému sympoziu “dílna“. Je koncipována jako knižní publikace, která prostřednictvím rozhovorů přibližuje nejen myšlení a tvorbu zúčastněných autorů, ale také se stala alespoň dílčím dokumentem o proměnách současného českého a potažmo středoevropského výtvarného umění. Kromě textů obsahuje kvalitní reprodukce děl, jež se stala součástí sbírky současného umění města Mikulova, dokumentární fotografie z průběhu akce a odborné zhodnocení zpracované zúčastněným teoretikem Ondřejem Čechem. Autory rozhovorů s protagonisty 21. ročníku: Stanislavem Divišem, Janem Pištěkem, Aldinem Popajou, Václavem Bláhou, Petrem Veselým, Oldřichem Tichým a Viktorií Prokopovou je právě zmíněný Ondřej Čech.
