Arcimboldo
Amusement, astonishment, irritation, even indignation: the composite heads of Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526/7-1593) may prompt a whole range of emotions, but no one can remain indifferent to them. Combining the impact of surprise with the aesthetics of the bizarre, his art - reflecting the religious and political upheavals that shook Europe in the second half of the sixteenth century - invites ambivalent responses. For Arcimboldo, aesthetics took precedence over reality, and invenzione was more important than being true to life. A master in the art of sensory deception and an artist of virtuoso technical and conceptual skills, he created an oeuvre whose fascination is as much visual as intellectual.
Ingres
Despite an admiration for his mentors that never wavered, Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) forged his own unique style, a combination of virtuoso realism and strange distortions that was to make him one of the greatest painters of his century. Both highly praised and heavily criticized, this pupil of David and lover of the italian Renaissance, classical art and ideal beauty, was hugely admired as the saviour of traditional painting from the vagaries of the Romantics. But his work's fascination lay in his portraits and odalisques rather than his history paintings, and it is these that inspired some of the most avant-garde artists of t twentieth century.
Hokusai's Method
An omnibus edition collecting 15 volumes of Hokusai’s dedicated drawing manuals, ‘e-tehon’. Of the 300 or so printed books Hokusai created in his lifetime, a huge proportion of these were dedicated drawing manuals, known as e-tehon (drawing models). They show not only Hokusai’s great proficiency as a draughtsman, but also his wealth of ideas, and his sense of humour.
This omnibus edition collects 15 volumes of Hokusai's e-tehon, which feature over 800 illustrations of instructions from 1812 to 1848. With every page faithfully reproduced against the original works, the book shows Hokusai's playful approach to drawing with amusing songs, pictures comprised of letterforms (a forerunner to today’s emoji), modern designs for craftsmen, and, yes, dance moves. This all-encompassing endeavour also includes a valuable work that he published just before his death.

Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Drawings

Pastels by Degas, watercolours by Cézanne, pen-and-ink drawings by Van Gogh and mixed media works by Toulouse-Lautrec have an autonomy of their own, which proved instrumental in the development of modern art.
The distinguished art historian Christopher Lloyd examines the drawings of twenty of the leading Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists, highlighting an aspect of French avant-garde art that remains relatively unexplored and was of immense importance for the art movements that followed.
Camille Corot
Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot was one of the greatest painters of human representations. His work is known all over the world, but has so far remained rather hidden from the general public. Above all, he is regarded as the most important modern landscape painter in France. Born at the time of the emerging classicism, he experienced the development of the great styles in lath century painting - but never felt a part of only one. The art critics at the beginning of the loth century nevertheless described him as the „pioneer of Impressionism". The artist cared little about such discussions. He loved to travel. He was constantly searching for the optimal light and new impressions, which he took with him into his studio to paint.

Jackson Pollock - The Early Years: 1934-1947

Impressionism 1860-1910
In the 1860s, a style of painting emerged in Paris which fundamentally called into question the artistic concepts that had been prevalent in academies up to that time. Impressionist artists such as Monet, Renoir, and Degas now focused on their impression of the moment, which was captured in paintings depicting moods and light at certain times of the day and of the season, as well as in snapshots of modern life. This new kind of artistic worldview spread to other countries in Europe and the United States, which in turn produced numerous Impressionist painters. Dialektika revolty/ Vliv díla Pabla Picassa v Čechách
Bez vlivu Pabla Picassa by neexistovalo české moderní umění v podobě, jak se rozvíjelo po druhé světové válce. Přijetí jeho nejnovější tvorby mělo zásadní význam. Od široce rozšířené holubice jako symbolu míru v padesátých letech se pozornost přesouvala od konce tohoto desetiletí k Picassovým posledním dílům, s nimiž se mohla veřejnost seznámit na několika samostatných výstavách (1965 a 1967). Souběžně nad Picassem probíhala zásadní diskuse o povaze realismu, s nímž se vyrovnávala většina dobových výtvarníků, teoretiků a historiků umění, jako byli Jakobson, Teige, Kramář, Filla, Hoffmeister, Padrta, Mukařovský, Kosík či Garaudy. Stával-li se z kubismu historický jev, nejnovější Picassovy polohy vzbuzovaly protichůdné odezvy, které vždy tkly do živého tak silně, že vznikl názor, že maloval pohlavím, nikoli štětcem. Nejnovější práci historika umění Karla Srpa provází soubor nově objevených fotografií Dagmar Hochové, uskutečněný během Picassovy samostatné výstavy v pražském Mánesu v roce 1967.
Magritte
Magritte is published in association with a major survey of the work of the pioneering Belgian surrealist artist at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney.
René Magritte (1948–1967) is renowned for his thought-provoking and enigmatic paintings that challenge the viewer's perception of reality. His exploration of the subconscious and the juxtaposition of ordinary objects in surreal contexts have left an indelible mark on the art world, influencing generations of artists and thinkers.
The exhibition is the first Magritte retrospective to be presented in Australia and includes approximately 100 artworks drawn from public and private collections in the Asia–Pacific, Europe and the United States. The accompanying book provides an engaging, accessible and in-depth survey of Magritte’s practice, giving audiences insights into the evolution of his art from the early 1920s until his final works of the 1960s.
The book features reproductions of the 100+ works in the exhibition alongside rarely seen archival materials, commercial work and photography. The images are accompanied by four essays and an interview with Magritte (originally recorded for Belgian television in 1965), which together offer nuanced perspectives on the aesthetic foundations of his work while also considering the social and artistic context for his practice.
An essay by the curator of Magritte, Nicholas Chambers, leads us through the arc of the exhibition, revealing the artist’s extraordinary capacity for innovation and reinvention. Xavier Canonne, an expert on Belgian surrealism, focuses on the artist’s milieux during the formative period of the 1920s. Natalie Dupecher, associate curator of modern art at the Menil Collection in Houston, picks up the story in the 1930s and considers the reception and promotion of Magritte’s art outside of Europe. And Belgian art historian Julie Waseige reflects on a key, underlying theme of the artist’s practice: his remarkable use of humour. Additionally, an extensive illustrated chronology compiled by Tai Spruyt charts the artist’s eventful life and career.
Karol Harmos 1879-1956 Harmos Károly
Popredný predstaviteľ fantazijného umenia a symbolizmu, maliar, kresliar a pedagóg s pôvodným menom Karl Handwerk mal síce svoje korene na Morave, v Sliezsku, Bratislave, Pécsi, Budapešti, ale prevažnú časť svojho života prežil v Komárne. Jeho tvorba uchvacuje postavami bizarného sveta, scenériami fauny a flóry, v ktorých sa odráža labyrint ľudskej duše a existenciálny strach človeka. Oficiálna povojnová garnitúra nejavila o jeho umenie záujem, a tak zostal pre širšiu verejnosť takmer neznámy. Jeho ateliér však bol pre priaznivcov umenia vždy otvorený a často navštevovaný a k jeho žiakom patrili takí významní maliari ako Ernest Zmeták, Géza Szóbel či Michal Staudt.
Pohľad na Harmosovu tvorbu, na diela z verejných a najmä súkromných zbierok, bolo možné oprieť o jeho pozostalosť, skicáre, denníky a zápisky, ako aj iné dobové zmienky a priniesť tak svedectvo o výnimočnom zjave stredoeurópskej umeleckej scény. Monografiu pripravila a napísala Marta Herucová – historička umenia, ktorá sa na pôde Slovenskej akadémie vied dlhodobo venuje výskumu umenia devätnásteho a začiatku dvadsiateho storočia. O reprezentatívny dizajn a typografiu knihy sa postaral skvelý dizajnér Marek Kianička.
