Nordic Noir

With many works published for the first time, this lavishly illustrated publication celebrates several Nordic artists who examine the fundamental themes of nature, the environment, identity, and heritage through visually arresting and beautiful prints and drawings.
The overwhelmingly spectacular landscape of the region features prominently in many works-dark fjords, vast uninhabited mountain ranges, and heavily forested areas provide a counterpoint to depictions of densely crowded, highly developed urban spaces viewed through the Nordic lens. A growing mood of melancholy and existential angst, emerging from the trauma of the Second World War and the uncertain threat of the Cold War, is often illustrated by a lone, brooding figure. Prints from the 1970s convey a deep criticism of US foreign policy and the Vietnam War but ironically adopt the iconography of American pop art with striking contemporary imagery and bold use of color. The Indigenous Sámi people living in the northern part of Scandinavia and Russia address issues such as their own heritage and identity within the Nordic world. Regional identity is also explored from pride in the artists' own native countries to coded references to their "Viking" past. Vermeer
The paintings of Johannes Vermeer of Delft are some of the most beautiful, even sublime, in the history of art. Yet like the life of Vermeer himself, they are mysterious and have for centuries defied explanation. Following new leads, and drawing on a mass of historical evidence, some of it freshly uncovered in the archives of Delft and Rotterdam, Andrew Graham-Dixon paints a dramatically new picture of Vermeer, revealing many of the painter's hitherto unknown friendships as well as his previously undetected allegiance to a radical movement driven underground by persecution.
He also vividly evokes the world of the Dutch Republic as it was in its so-called Golden Age. This was a watery world of fortresses and flood plains, taverns rocked by argument and cities stunned by devastating attacks and explosions: all linked by a network of canals where a uniquely efficient public transport system, operated by horse-drawn passenger barge, enabled people, goods and ideas to glide effortlessly from one place to another. The author sets Vermeer firmly in the context of his time, revealing the patterns of patronage that make sense of his work, and also exposing the difficulties posed by his home life, which was dominated by his Jesuit mother-in law and disturbed by the psychotic behaviour of her only son.
In the past Vermeer has been imagined as a remote and enigmatic figure, but he emerges from this new account as a man deeply engaged with his own society: well-travelled, a reader of books, a man personally connected to many of the most interesting people of his time, including merchants, philosophers, preachers, bankers and regents, as well as his childhood friend, a philanthropic baker named Hendrick van Buyten. Vermeer was also deeply affected by the struggles that shook his world, the Eighty Years War for Dutch independence and the yet more terrible Thirty Years War, which ravaged the neighbouring German lands and resulted in the deaths of millions. The author shows how he was moved to become a pacifist by such atrocities, and thereafter made many of his closest friends in the ranks of Europe's first peace movement. A further revelation is that Vermeer's closest collaborator and chief patron was a woman, as were many others in his immediate circle. These are all previously untold stories.
The many piercingly direct descriptions of Vermeer's pictures, which are the heart of the book, shed new light on the intentions of the artist. Nearly all of his best loved works, Graham-Dixon shows, were originally painted for a single significant location in Delft. In light of such discoveries every one of Vermeer's major paintings, including The Girl with a Pearl Earring, A View of Delft and The Milkmaid, are reassessed and their meanings rethought. As a result the two great unresolved questions about Vermeer - why did he paint his pictures, and what do they mean? - are persuasively answered here for the first time.

Celestial Citrus
J. C. Volkamer’s 18th-century ode to the citrus fruit
Have you ever thought of citrus fruits as celestial bodies, angelically suspended in the sky? Perhaps not, but J. C. Volkamer (1644–1720) did—commissioning an extravagant and breathtaking series of large-sized copperplates representing citrons, lemons, and bitter oranges in surreal scenes of majesty and wonder.
Ordering plants by post mostly from Italy, Germany, North Africa, and even the Cape of Good Hope, the Nuremberg merchant Volkamer was a devotee of the fragrant and exotic citrus at a time when such fruits were still largely unknown north of the Alps. His garden came to contain a wide variety of specimens, and he became so obsessed with the fruits that he commissioned a team of copperplate engravers to create 256 plates of 170 varieties of citrus fruits, many depicted life size, published in a two-volume work. The first volume appeared in 1708, with the impressively lengthy title The Nuremberg Hesperides, or: A detailed description of the noble fruits of the citron, lemon and bitter orange; how these may be correctly planted, cared for and propagated in that and neighboring regions.
In both volumes, Volkamer draws on years of hands-on experience to present a far-reaching account of citrus fruits and how to tend them—from a meticulous walk-through of how to construct temporary orangeries, glasshouses, and hothouses for growing pineapples to commentary on each fruit variety, including its size, shape, color, scent, tree or shrub, leaves, and country of origin.
In each plate, Volkamer pays tribute to the verdant landscapes of Northern Italy, his native Nuremberg, and other sites that captured his imagination. From Genovese sea views to the Schönbrunn Palace, each locale is depicted in the same exceptional detail as the fruit that overhangs it. We witness branches heavy with grapefruits arching across a sun-bathed yard in Bologna and marvel at a huge pineapple plant sprouting from a South American town. The result is at once a fantastical line-up of botanical beauty and a highly poetic tour through the lush gardens and places where these fruits grew.
Few colored sets of Volkamer’s work are still in existence today. This publication draws on the two recently discovered hand-colored volumes in the city of Fürth’s municipal archive in Schloss Burgfarrnbach. The reprint also includes 56 later discovered illustrations that Volkamer intended to present in a third volume.

Francisco de Goya was one of the most innovative peintre-graveurs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, his etchings and lithographs masterpieces of modern printmaking. John Sallis vo svojej knihe Významy krajiny, ktorá sa venuje stvárneniu krajiny v maliarstve, vychádza z tvrdenia, že zem je základným elementom, ktorý poskytuje ľuďom i ostatným živým bytostiam útočisko a čitateľom predkladá pôsobivé syntetické dielo. Významy krajiny ponúkajú tri druhy analýz, ktoré sú síce odlišné, ale priebežne sa neustále prelínajú. Prvá pozostáva z rozsiahlych analýz charakteristických krajín štyroch exemplárnych maliarov, Paula Cézanna, Caspara Davida Friedricha, Paula Kleeho a Guo Xiho. Sallis sa následne obracia k vlastným spisom týchto umelcov – traktátom, esejam a listom – o umení vo všeobecnosti a krajinomaľbe zvlášť, a zasadzuje ich do filozofického kontextu. Tretí druh analýz čerpá ako z teoretických textov samotného autora, tak aj z kanonických textov filozofie umenia (Kant, Schelling, Hegel a Heidegger).
