William Eggleston: The Last Dyes
This momentous publication catalogues the last major group of William Eggleston’s photographs to ever be produced using the dye-transfer method, the format in which he originally presented his work.
Eggleston’s vivid photographs transform the ordinary into distinctive, poetic images that eschew fixed meaning. One of the foremost practitioners in the medium’s history, Eggleston is widely considered the father of color photography. He pioneered the use of dye-transfer printing for art photography in the 1970s. The technically advanced process?first developed by Kodak in the 1940s?allowed him to achieve the richness of tonal depth and color saturation that he had been searching for. In the early 1990s, Kodak stopped producing the dyes, paper, and film used in the process. With the necessary materials now discontinued, and the bulk of what remained being used for the major group of work presented at David Zwirner in Los Angeles, The Last Dyes marks the final presentation of new works completed in this medium.

In the mid- 1920s, the heyday of silent film, the epic Western swept Hollywood and the nation. Movie moguls sought to add gravitas to their output with the productions - films they argued offered American audiences authentic history and lessons in citizenship at a time when Hollywood faced criticism for its movies' morals and star scandals. Initially extremely popular, these now nearly forgotten Westerns were hailed by the movie industry's proponents and critics alike for their 'authentic' reconstruction of America's nineteenth-century frontier period and the social benefits in portraying historical episodes foundational to American identity to the melting pot of moviegoers. In Projecting America, the first-ever book on these silent epic Westerns, Patrick Adamson demonstrates how these films indelibly impacted the genre, historical filmmaking, and Hollywood, inviting audiences to accept uncritical visions of Manifest Destiny as accurate history. Initially met with critical and commercial failure, the film is now revered for its technical prowess and considered one of the finest self-reflexive works in Indian cinema.Lalitha Gopalan explores Kaagaz’s innovative visual style, being the first Indian film shot in CinemaScope, highlighting cinematographer V. K. Murthy’s essential contribution. She also analyses the soundtrack, composed by S. D. Burman with lyrics by Kaifi Azmi, examining the now-classic picturisations of songs such as ‘Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam’. Drawing on interviews with practitioners and people close to Dutt, Gopalan reconstructs the original contexts of the film’s production and reception. Finally, using Kagaaz as a lens, she assesses Dutt’s influence on popular Indian cinema during the 1950s, as well as on global film melodrama more broadly.
