John Sallis vo svojej knihe Významy krajiny, ktorá sa venuje stvárneniu krajiny v maliarstve, vychádza z tvrdenia, že zem je základným elementom, ktorý poskytuje ľuďom i ostatným živým bytostiam útočisko a čitateľom predkladá pôsobivé syntetické dielo. Významy krajiny ponúkajú tri druhy analýz, ktoré sú síce odlišné, ale priebežne sa neustále prelínajú. Prvá pozostáva z rozsiahlych analýz charakteristických krajín štyroch exemplárnych maliarov, Paula Cézanna, Caspara Davida Friedricha, Paula Kleeho a Guo Xiho. Sallis sa následne obracia k vlastným spisom týchto umelcov – traktátom, esejam a listom – o umení vo všeobecnosti a krajinomaľbe zvlášť, a zasadzuje ich do filozofického kontextu.
