Permanent Red

In Permanent Red, John Berger argues that the contemporary artist should strive for a realism that aims for hope, to transform the world. Surveying the work of historical artists as well as that of near contemporaries such as Picasso, Léger and Matisse, he explores the role of the artist, dividing these figures into those that struggle, those that fail, and the true masters. He explains why we should study the work of the past: in order to understand the present and to rethink the future. First published in 1960, Permanent Red established John Berger as a firebrand critic willing to broadcast controversial opinions on some of the most important British artists of the day, including Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

How to Be Avant-Garde

The strange story of the twentieth-century artists who sought to destroy art by transforming it into the substance of everyday life “Art has poisoned our life”, proclaimed Dutch artist and De Stijl co-founder Theo van Doesburg. Reacting to the tumultuous crises of the twentieth century, especially the horrors of the First World War, avant-garde artists and writers sought to destroy art by transforming it into the substance of everyday life. Following the evolution of these revolutionary groups, How to Be Avant-Garde charts its pioneers and radical ideas. From Paris to New York, from Zurich to Moscow and Berlin, avant-gardists challenged the confines of the definition of art along with the confines of the canvas itself. Art historian Morgan Falconer starts with the dynamic Futurist founder Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, whose manifesto extolling speed, destruction and modernity seeded avant-gardes across Europe. In turn, Dadaists Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings sought to replace art with political cabaret and the Surrealists tried to exchange it for tools to plumb the unconscious. He guides us through the Russian Constructivists with their adventures in advertising and utopianism and then De Stijl with the geometric abstractions of Piet Mondrian. The Bauhaus broke more boundaries, transmuting art into architecture and design. Finally, the Situationists swapped art for politics, with many of their ideas inspiring the 1968 Paris student protests. How to Be Avant-Garde is a journey through the interlocking networks of these richly creative lives with their visions of a better world, their sometimes sympathetic but often strange and turbulent conversations and their objects and writings that defied categorisation. “Art has poisoned our life”, proclaimed Dutch artist and De Stijl co-founder Theo van Doesburg. Screenprints (Victoria & Albert Museum)

A celebration of the rich 20th- and 21st-century tradition of screenprinting as a means of artistic expression, from its commercial origins in 1920s America to the limited-edition screenprints of the post-war period and today, by artists such as Andy Warhol, Bridget Riley and Damien Hirst. Screenprints: A History, the first title in the V&A's new series on the history and practice of printmaking, is a celebration of the fine-art applications of this versatile medium, from the commercial origins of the screenprinting process in 1920s America, its pivotal role in 1960s Pop and Op Art among artists such as Andy Warhol and Bridget Riley, through to its adoption by Damien Hirst and the YBAs of the 1990s, and its enduring presence in contemporary art. This beautifully designed, strikingly illustrated introduction will appeal to art lovers and practising artists everywhere. The origins of the screenprinting process are introduced through early artistic precursors, such as the stencil and pochoir printing in the making of Henri Matisse’s Jazz, and other artists’ books. Screenprinting became one of the most important techniques in the rise of artists’ limited-edition fine art prints from the 1960s onwards, seen here in the work of notable figures such as Roy Lichtenstein and Eduardo Paolozzi, and contemporary artists such as Damien Hirst, who have variously engaged with the medium’s commercial origins and, conversely, its capacity for a hand-made aesthetic. Special focus is given to lesser-known names who pioneered the use of the screenprint in fine art in the UK, the USA and Europe, including Francis Carr and Ben Shahn, while tracing its global spread through Africa, the Caribbean and Australasia. An illustrated, step-by-step guide to the practical process further enriches this multifaceted account. The democratic medium has further lent itself to spontaneous graphic protest, notably in the Atelier Populaire posters made in Paris in 1968, featured here and embodying screenprinting’s unique qualities, rich colours and graphic impact.

First Women of Hollywood

The early motion picture industry exploded in the 1910s when middle class audiences became hooked on the beautiful storytelling images flashing by them onscreen. As movie attendance exploded, more workers were required to produce this riveting new form of entertainment. Largely created by immigrants, the film industry creatively and scientifically evolved over its first few decades thanks to the work of people outside the traditional ruling class—immigrants, people of color, women—partly as a result of elites denigrating the fledgling field. As the moving picture business transitioned from neophyte to powerhouse, young and ambitious rebels—both men and women—energized and revitalized its output. At the same time, American culture was evolving as women sought the right to vote and work outside traditional fields, unions exploded, and immigrants contributed to flourishing businesses.Mostly written out of history, women provided an integral component for popularizing silent film and making it an enormous success, paving the way for Golden Age Hollywood. They often pioneered practices and established trends, leading several fields in its early days. Women were integral inproducing enough films for exploding demand in the industry''s second decade. Men often resented their power and success, and as the studio system of massive factories and industrialization took hold, women found themselves out of favor and replaced.First Women of Hollywood will explore and illustrate the invaluable role and contributions of these mostly forgotten and unacknowledged pioneers.

Troufalá libozvučnost: chromatismus a dvojí povaha trojzvuků

Rembrandt. The Complete Paintings

The Dutch Golden Age of painting spawned some of history’s greatest artists and artisans, but few can boast the genius and legacy of Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn (1606–1669). Despite never leaving his native Netherlands, Rembrandt projected his oeuvre past the boundaries of his own experience, producing some of art’s most diverse and impactful works across portraiture, biblical, allegorical, landscape, and genre scenes. In all their forms, Rembrandt’s paintings are built of intricacies?the totality of each subtle facial wrinkle, gaze, or figure amounting to an emotional force that stands unmatched among his contemporaries and artistic progeny alike. Each work is imbued with feeling. Biblical scenes, like Bathsheba at her Bath, become vehicles for meditations on human longing, probing depths beyond that which is canonized in scripture or depicted in other representations. His portraits, be them of wealthy patrons or tradesmen, communicate the essence of an individual through fine demarcations, their faces bathed in an ethereal light against darkened earthtones. Perhaps most striking, his series of self-portraits is a triumph of the medium; beginning in his youth and spanning until a year prior to his death, Rembrandt’s self portraiture is an intimate glimpse into his lifelong process of self-reflection. This XL monograph compiles all 330 of Rembrandt’s paintings in stunning reproductions. From Belshazzar’s Feast to The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp, we discover Rembrandt’s painted oeuvre like never before.

Dostali v nej priestor práce z oblasti textilu, maľby, kresby, objekty a inštalácie z „transplant artu“ – či novšie koláže s ekologickou témou. Katalóg výstavy predstavuje svojrázny profil výtvarníka-pedagóga, ktorý odráža symbiózu jeho profesionálnej a výtvarnej dráhy.

Filming in European Cities

Filming in European Cities explores the effort behind creating screen production locations. Ipek A. Celik Rappas accounts the rising demand for original and affordable locations for screen projects due to the growth of streaming platforms. As a result, screen professionals are repeatedly tasked with chores such as transforming a former factory in Istanbul to resemble a war zone in Aleppo, or finding a London street that evokes Barcelona. Celik Rappas highlights the pivotal role crew members play in transforming cities and locations into functional screen settings. Examining five European media capitals—Athens, Belfast, Berlin, Istanbul, and Paris—the book delves into the overlooked aspects of location-related screen labor and its ability to generate production value. Filming in European Cities demonstrates that in its perpetual quest for authentic filming locations, the screen industry extracts value from cities and neighborhoods, their marginalized residents, and screen labor, enriching itself through this triple exploitation.
