An exquisitely illustrated, one-of-a-kind celebration of the hidden beauty of nature and the ingenuity of birds
Susan Ogilvy started painting bird nests almost by accident. One day, while tidying up her garden after a storm, she found a chaffinch nest - a strange, sodden lump on the grass under a fir tree. She carried it inside and placed it on a newspaper; over the next few hours, as the water drained out of it, the sodden lump blossomed into a mossy jewel. She was amazed, and dropped everything to make a painting of the nest at exact life size.
This was the start of an obsession; Ogilvy has since painted more than fifty bird nests from life, each time marvelling at its ingenious construction. Every species of bird has its own vernacular, but sources its materials - most commonly twigs, roots, grasses, reeds, leaves, moss, lichen, hair, feathers and cobwebs, less usually, mattress stuffing and string - according to local availability. Ogilvy would, of course, never disturb nesting birds; instead she relies upon serendipity, which is why all her nests have either been abandoned after fulfilling their purpose, or displaced by strong winds.
Although Nests showcases the specimens she has found near her homes in Somerset and on the Isle of Arran, its subject matter is by no means only British, since these same birds can be found all over Europe, Scandinavia and as far afield as Russia, Turkey and North Africa. This wondrous book is all the more special for its rarity. Few modern books exist specifically on the subject of bird nests; the most recent among the author's reference works was published in 1932. Christo and Jeanne-Claude. L'Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped
1961, three years after meeting Jeanne-Claude in Paris, Christo made a study of a mammoth project that would wrap one of the city's most emblematic monuments. 60 years, 25,000 square meters of recyclable fabric, and 3,000 meters of rope later, the artists' vision finally came true. V této knize je zaznamenán kompletní vývoj legendárního souboru od počátků v rozhlasovém pořadu Nealkoholická vinárna U Pavouka přes normalizační nucené přesuny, změnu režimu a odchod Ladislava Smoljaka až po nucené přestávky v účinkování v době koronavirové pandemie. Jde o historii divadla zpracovanou sezonu po sezoně. Je v ní zahrnuto co možná nejvíce zajímavých informací za 55 let jeho působení. Unikátní jsou autentické vzpomínky, které herci poskytli autorovi v průběhu posledních dvou let. Knihu doplňuje řada dobových, dosud nepublikovaných, fotografií a zajímavých dokumentů.
Dá se s nadsázkou říci, že jde o neobjevenou truhlu se spisy o historii DJC, které se jen velmi těžko hledají v takto ucelené podobě.

Brněnská secese vyrostla v mnohotvárný a současně celistvý fenomén doby. Objevná poznání jednotlivých uměleckých disciplin tvoří celek překvapivé obsažnosti a výtvarné síly. Architektura je přirozenou součástí hnutí i samostatnou tvůrčí silou, která vytvořila příznivé prostředí a spolehlivý rámec doby a její kultury. Svým výtvarným úsilím a charakteristickým stylem směřovala secese k nalezení výrazové jistoty a vytvoření slohu jako hodnověrné formy kultury společnosti. F. X. Šalda ve stati Nová krása z roku 1903 označil secesi jako nejvyšší kulturní hodnotu. Jako jednotuumění a života, která je výrazem nutnosti a nikoliv spekulací.
Dne 28. 7. 1914 se lidé probudili do děsivého rána. Rakousko-Uhersko se ocitlo uprostřed rozsáhlého válečného konfliktu, který ničil hodnoty dosavadní společnosti. Secese, založená na ušlechtilých principech se ocitla na hraně závratně probíhajícího rozpadu společenského a kulturního. Teprve po čtyřech letech válečného běsnění přišel nový začátek, založený však na odlišných základech nové vývojové epochy.
