Luiz Zerbini: Botanica, Monotypes 2016-2020
Exquisite monotypes celebrating the beauty of plants by transforming them into inky abstractions
Though he has engaged with a variety of mediums--watercolor, photography, sculpture--Brazilian artist Luiz Zerbini (born 1959) has devoted the past several years to the creation of monotypes. He selects leaves, flowers and branches for their distinctive shapes and textures and places them on an inked metal plate. He then lays a large sheet of paper over the plate so that the botanical compositions are transferred onto the page. The result is a large-scale monotype print that immerses the viewer in the minute details of a plant's anatomy.
High contrast, with a minimal palette of browns, blacks and greens, these images blur the distinction between figuration and abstraction. Over the past four years, the artist has created more than 300 monotypes in this style, working from within major museum institutions in Brazil. Firstly, it is necessary to find a concept: one single theme that structures the designs of that collection and from which the creations are developed. The next step is to design a moodboard, an inspirational collage formed by images, text and samples of materials prior to the design of the collection, which then leads to the initial sketches using the illustration technique of one's choosing. Réti István A NAGYBÁNYAI MŰVÉSZTELEP Réti István könyve, A nagybányai művésztelep, a 19–20. századi magyar művészet egyik legjelentősebb szellemi, szemléleti, stiláris mozgalmának a történetét tárgyalja s résztvevőinek alakját, munkásságát mutatja be, a korszak legfontosabb művészettörténeti forrásmunkái közé tartozik. Szerzőjét, aki maga is a nagybányai festőkolónia első, alapító nemzedékének tagja, az eseményeknek nem csak résztvevője, hanem egyik megindítója is volt, műveltsége, széles látóköre, a történelem és művészettörténet iránti fogékonysága, s nem utolsósorban írói vénája a mozgalom krónikásának, s mintegy teoretikusának szerepére predesztinálta.
