Praha, hlavní město 20. století
Derek Sayer ve své monumentální knize Praha, hlavní město dvacátého století skládá střípky kulturních dějin Prahy a Československa mezi dvěma světovými válkami, aby ukázal, jak zapadají do mozaiky evropských dějin. Autor si všímá kontaktů Guillaumea Apollinaira, André Bretona, Paula Eluarda a dalších světových surrealistů s Vítězslavem Nezvalem, Karlem Teigem, Toyen, Jindřichem Štýrským, ale i Prahou obecně.
V jednom fragmentu dějin umění se často zrcadlí celá meziválečná situace. Události v Sayerově Praze se jeví jako úryvky z prorockých snů předznamenávajících události evropského či světového významu. Sny avantgardy se v tomto prostoru snadno překlápějí do těch nejhorších nočních můr dvacátého století, a naopak, kruté žerty dějin se z odstupu jeví jako příklady černého humoru doprovázené osvobozujícím smíchem. V Sayerově knize čtenář prochází tkanivem meziválečné Prahy, tak jako spáč ve snu prochází noční krajinou, v níž se mu objevují fragmenty jeho vlastních dějin, jeho zklamání i touhy.
Praha byla ve dvacátém století svědkem revolucí a invazí, národního osvobození a etnických čistek, holocaustu, soudních procesů a snů o socialismu s lidská tvář. V době, kdy Praha byla hlavním městem nejvýchodnější parlamentní demokracie v Evropě, byla také ohniskem umělecké a architektonické moderny a centrem surrealismu hned za Paříží.
Se zaměřením na tyto roky zkoumá Sayer pražské velkolepé moderní budovy, památky, obrazy, knihy, filmy, opery, výstavy a mnoho dalšího. Praha byla místem, kde se utopické fantazie století opakovaně rozplývaly, a jako taková byla šitá na míru surrealistickému černému humoru André Bretona. Sayer hovoří o tom, jak město produkovalo bezkonkurenční znalce ponuré komedie, od Franze Kafky a Jaroslava Haška po Milana Kunderu a Václava Havla.
Stručný příběh fotografie
Fotografie představuje svět, případně zkoumá složitosti lidské psychologie a emocí. Dokáže zachytit prchavý okamžik nebo připomínat pomalé plynutí času. Během téměř 200 let své existence se rozvíjela rychleji než jakékoliv jiné vizuální umění.
Tato kniha představuje krátké dějiny fotografie a vyzdvihuje nejvýznamnější žánry a styly v jejím rozvoji. Sleduje technologický pokrok, na jehož pozadí se camera obscura z raných dob transformovala v moderní zrcadlovku. A upozorňuje také na 50 klíčových děl, od piktoralismu a fotožurnalistiky po abstrakci a přímou fotografii, která nesmazatelně ovlivnila cesty, jimiž se fotografie ubírala. Tato historie není vyčerpávající, ale poukazuje na to, jaký význam fotografie získala v chápání světa kolem nás.
Kaple Matky Boží
Když na sklonku roku 1349 dal Karel IV. norimberským měšťanům souhlas se zřízením velkého tržiště na místě dosavadního židovského ghetta, a nepřímo tak připustil následný pogrom, vymínil si, že na místě synagogy vznikne kaple zasvěcená Panně Marii. Tak se také stalo. Za deset let byla stavba hotová a v čele nového tržiště se skvělo její nádherné průčelí s bohatě zdobenou a třemi portály otevřenou předsíní. Sál naší Paní je dodnes jedním ze symbolů města Norimberku. Mnohé jej ale pojí i s českým prostředím. Vedle osoby fundátora, císaře a českého krále Karla IV., to jsou mnohé umělecké vazby a také badateli dosud opomíjený sbor mansionářů pražské katedrály, jimž byla svěřena duchovní správa norimberské kaple. Kniha představuje vůbec první uměnovědnou monografii stavby. Její první část má podobu průvodce uměnímilovného návštěvníka, druhá část zasazuje stavbu, její výzdobu a mobiliář do kontextu středověké liturgické praxe.

Karel Vaňura 1937-2018
Karel Vaňura, malíř a sklář, je jedním z nejoriginálnějších tvůrců v českém umění 2. poloviny 20. století, dokládá to i tato monografie s množstvím reprodukcí obrazů, asambláží, skleněných vitrají a realizací v architektuře. Vaňura nepřijímal, respektive mechanicky nepřejímal dobové styly a směry, jeho tvorba je původní a autentická. Vaňura v mnoha dílech dosáhl originálních řešení, jak po vizuální, tak po technologické stránce; koncem šedesátých let byl označován jako jeden z nastupujících talentů československého umění, sklářského i malířského. Právě taková tvorba tvoří z českého umění druhé poloviny 20. století onu pestrou, lákavou směsici, která stále překvapuje a inspiruje a která ukazuje, že je stále co objevovat. Tato monografie je prvním komplexním zpracováním díla autora, který kromě vlastní tvorby jako uznávaný pedagog ovlivnil celé generace výtvarníků a který mnohokrát starost o práci ostatních kladl nad svou vlastní tvorbu.
