Fifth Force
Prvá súhrnná monografická publikácia Jaroslava Kyšu Fifth Force zhodnocuje umelcovu doterajšiu tvorbu a podáva o nej celistvý obraz. Dokumentuje diela, ktoré vytvoril v rokoch 2013 až 2018 a je doplnená textami v angličtine aj slovenčine od rešpektovaných domácich i zahraničných teoretičiek a teoretikov – medzi nimi od Lily Hall, Jána Kraloviča, Erika Vilíma a Miry Keratovej. Jednotlivé texty sa na Kyšovu tvorbu pozerajú z rôznych teoretických pozícií a poskytujú tak vrstevnatú analýzu. Vstup Miry Keratovej má podobu rozhovoru, ktorý umožňuje hlbší náhľad do umelcovho uvažovania a tvorivých postupov.
Němci a jejich umění
Přehledná práce předního historika umění se zamýšlí nad tím, co je specificky německého na německém umění. Autor na relativně malém prostoru zachycuje postoje Němců k jejich umění od romantismu až po současnost a líčí bouřlivé spory, které se o ně vedly.
Jak přesvědčivě dokládá, vizuální umění hrálo v Německu vždy zvláštní roli, jež byla odlišná od jiných evropských zemí, a dobře se v něm zrcadlí jeho bolestný kulturní a politický vývoj po pozdním sjednocení v roce 1871. Bylo to především (ale nejen) vizuální umění, jehož prostřednictvím se Němci snažili najít svou kulturní identitu a v němž projevovali iracionální strach z toho, že budou ovlivněni cizinou.
To se nakonec projevilo zvláště silně ve třicátých letech v bojích o moderní umění a expresionismus (jediný skutečně původní německý styl), jež vyvrcholily jeho násilnou likvidací za Třetí říše.
Derek Jarman: Protest!
Derek Jarman was a very English rebel, a maverick and radical artist whose unique and distinctive voice was honed protesting against the strictures of life in post-war Britain. Peter Lindbergh. On Fashion Photography
It was on a Malibu beach in 1988 that Peter Lindbergh shot the White Shirts series, images now known the world over. Simple yet seminal, the photographs introduced us to Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Rachel Williams, Karen Alexander, Tatjana Patitz, and Estelle Lefebure. This marked the beginning of an era that redefined beauty, and Lindbergh would go on to alter the landscape of fashion photography for the decades that followed.
This book gathers more than 300 images from forty years of Lindbergh's career. It traces the German photographer's cinematic inflections and humanist approach, which produced images at once seductive and introspective.
In 1980 Rei Kawakubo asked Lindbergh to shoot a Commes des Garcons campaign, one of his earlier forays into commercial photography. Kawakubo gave him carte blanche. The following years brought forth collaborations with the most venerated names in fashion and resulted in a relationship of mutual reverence; Lindbergh's respect for some of the greatest designers of our time is palpable in his portraits. Among those photographed are Azzedine Alaia, Giorgio Armani, Alber Elbaz, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander, and Yohji Yamamoto.
Widely considered a pioneer in his field, Lindbergh shirked the industry standards of beauty and instead celebrated the essence and individuality of his subjects. He was pivotal to the rise of models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Mariacarla Boscono, Lara Stone, Claudia Schiffer, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Kristen McMenamy.
Lindbergh's reach also extended across Hollywood and beyond: Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Richard Gere, Isabelle Huppert, Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau all appear in his works. From the picture chosen by Anna Wintour as the cover of her first Vogue issue to the legendary shot of Tina Turner on the Eiffel Tower, it is never the clothes, celebrity, or glamour that takes center stage in a Lindbergh photograph. Each picture conveys the humanity of its subject with a serene melancholy that is uniquely and unmistakably Lindbergh.
From the outset of his career, Lindbergh was well-known in the contemporary art world, where his photographs were exhibited in galleries long before they appeared in magazines. This edition features an updated introduction adapted from an interview in 2016, allowing a glimpse behind Lindbergh's lens, where the photographer recounts his early collaborations, the tenuous relationship between commercial and fine art, and the power of storytelling.
Monet
Impressionism took its name from the title of a painting that Claude Monet (1840-1926) exhibited in 1874. More than any other artist, Monet was the creator of the Impressionist vision, which has so forcefully shaped the way in which he habitually see nature today. For sixty years he continuously explored ways of translating his experiences into paint, in pictures that take us from the bustling life of Paris in the 1860s to the seclusion of his own water-garden, which he painted in his last years.
John House's introduction to Monet's life and work presents a sequence of dazzling illustrations that chart the artist's progress as he became increasingly preoccupied with colour and atmospheric effect, and the direct studies of nature gave way to paintings of greater richness and harmony, in which the play of varied colours replaced the conventional drawing and modelling of forms.
Picasso
The name which predominates in the development of art throughout the twentieth century, and to which many of the revolutionary changes are ascribed, is that of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Not only was he one of the most influential artists, he was also one of the most versatile. This beautifully produced book surveys the whole range of his paintings, from the haunting works of the Blue Period, to the brute power of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the lyrical sweetness of his family portraits, the revolutionary developments of Cubism and the later manifold experimentations with form and colour.
Roland Penrose's introductory essay on Picasso was first published in 1971, when the great master was still alive. Penrose was acclaimed in his own right as a painter, and his long friendship with Picasso gave him unique insight into his life and work. David Lomas has written a preface introducing us to the friendship between these two artists.
He has also written notes to each full-page colour plate, discussing the picture in detail, making this a perfect introduction to the twentieth century's most famous artist.
Klimt
Gustave Klimt (1862-1918) was one of the most brilliant artists of the Austrian avant-garde. Admired for his sensual images of women and for his powerful and original vision, he produced some of the most haunting and evocative images of all time, including The Kiss, Love and The Three Ages of Woman, all of which are included in this perfect introduction to the artist's work. Klimt started out as a decorator, opening a studio with his brother Ernst.
Some of his most famous commissions were for murals, including the magnificent Beethoven Frieze, painted for the exhibition of Max Klinger's statue of Beethoven, and the monumental ceiling paintings for the auditorium of Vienna University, which shocked a conservative public. A founder of Vienna Secession, the band of artists who resigned from the established art bodies to form their own group, Klimt became the principal painter of the Art Nouveau movement, painting glittering portraits of fashionable Viennese society as well as startling and erotic allegories.
Van Gogh
The career of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-90) as a painter was short, but his paintings revolutionized artistic practice and styles. The intensity of his vision, his wonderful sense of colour and the extraordinary boldness of his technique created masterpieces that exercised a profound influence on the art of the twentieth century. There are also enormously popular, and paintings such as The Yellow Chair, The Drawbridge and The Sower are among the most the best-loved images of our time.
Wilhelm Uhde was an outstanding art critic and dealer who was born during Van Gogh's lifetime and witnessed at first hand his rise to fame at the beginning of the twentieth century. His masterly essay was first published in 1937 and remains one of the best introductions to Van Gogh's work. For this revised and expanded edition, the notes to the plates were added by Griselda Pollock, Professor of Social and Critical Histories of Art at the University of Leeds.
Dali
Salvador Dali (1904-89) is one of the most controversial and paradoxical artists of the twentieth century. A painter of considerable virtuosity, he used a traditional illusionistic style to create disturbing images filled with references to violence, death, cannibalism and bizarre sexual practices, from the extraordinary fluid watches in The Persistence of Memory to the gruesome monster in Soft Construction with Boiled Beans and the fetishistic lobster in the famous Lobster Telephone. Born in Figueras, Spain, Dali started out as a Cubist, but subsequently became involved with the Surrealists in Paris, the most revolutionary artists of the time. They regarded his paintings as revealing the hidden world of the unconscious. Indeed, the Surrealists' leader, Andre Breton, remarked: "It is perhaps with Dali that for the first time the windows of the mind are opened fully wide". However, Breton later expelled him from the group for his Fascist sympathies and derided his commercial success in the United States, calling him "Avida Dollars", an anagram of his name. Dali's response was equally curt: "The difference between me will the Surrealists is that I am a Surrealist". Far from restricting his interests to painting, Dali also wrote two autobiographies, including "Diary of a Genius" (1965), designed sets and costumes for a play by his friend Federico Garcia Lorca and collaborated with Luis Bunuel on the films "Un Chien Andalou" (1929) and "L'Age d'or" (1931), a medium which proved particularly apt for his provocative imagery.

The author
Stefan Fischer studied art history, history, and classical archaeology in Münster, Amsterdam, and Bonn. In 2009 he completed his doctoral thesis “Hieronymus Bosch: Malerei als Vision, Lehrbild und Kunstwerk.” His specialist fields are Netherlandish painting of the 15th to the 17th centuries and museology.
