Erte - Romain de Tirtoff 1892-1990
Anniversary edition celebrating the life and work of Romain de Tirtoff, better known as Erté, whose illustrations for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue made him one of the most sought-after artists of the 20th century.
Romain de Tirtoff (1892–1990), who changed his name to Erté (‘R’ and ‘T’ in French) when he left his native St Petersburg for Paris in 1912, became one of the most sought-after artists of the 20th century. His illustrations for Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue remain classics of the genre, proving that mass art can be genuine art. His work as stage, costume and fashion designer in Europe and America combined an eye for fashion and elegance with a sense of theatricality. In the early days Erté worked closely with the couturier Paul Poiret; he then took his remarkable talent to the stage, producing numerous designs for the revues and shows that were so popular at the time, as well as to film with his work for MGM. Mata Hari, Lillian Gish, Anna Pavlova and George Balanchine were just some of those whose costumes were designed by Erté. Even when his fame dipped, Erté remained true to his life’s work, continuing to create his wonderfully refined and delicate drawings, including the popular Alphabet series.

Alžírský režisér Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina (*1934) a nedávno zesnulý syrský režisér Nabil Maleh (19362016) jsou společně považováni zakladatele svých národních kinematografií a klíčové postavy arabského filmu. Vzhledem ke své politicky angažované a esteticky jedinečné tvorbě jsou také známí na mezinárodní scéně. Málokdo však ví, že v 60. letech oba dva studovali na pražské FAMU a že se toto studium bezpochyby odrazilo v jejich tvorbě. Mezi další významné asijské a africké režiséry, kteří prošli studiem na FAMU patří srílanský režisér Piyasiri Gunaratna (1939) a tuniský dokumentarista Hafed Bouassida (1947), stejně jako desítky dalších režisérů, kameramanů a scénáristů z různých zemí Asie, Afriky a Latinské Ameriky. Dvojjazyčná publikace se zaměřuje na kulturní výměnu spjatou s pobytem filmařů ze třetího světa v Československu. Zahrnuje rozhovory s některými z režisérů (Hafed Bouassida, Pyasiri Gunaratna) a studie tvorby Mohammeda Lakhdara-Haminy (Olivier Hadouchi) a Nabila Maleha (Kay Dickinson). Neviditelné druhy elektromagnetického záření, mikroskopické struktury látek, makroskopické vesmírné objekty, atmosférické změny počasí, psychopatologické projevy chování člověka, popularizačně naučné katalogy zvířat nebo výzkum fází pohybu. To vše lákalo k horlivému zaznamenávání na fotografické materiály.

Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets. Claudia Walde has spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from 30 countries with a view to showing the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world renowned such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa) and Hera (Germany); others are lesser known or only now starting to emerge. Each artist received the same brief: to design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them. The results are a fascinating insight into the creative process.
