Kniha o volném písničkářském sdružení Šafrán, působícím u nás v 70. letech minulého století a sdružujícím výrazné osobnosti české a slovenské folkové hudby - mj. Jaroslava Hutku, Vladimíra Mertu, Vlastimila Třešňáka, Vladimíra Veita, Bohdana Mikoláška, Zuzanu Michnovou, Petra Kalandru, Oskara Petra, Dagmar Voňkovou, Petra Lutku, Zuzanu Homolovou, Pepu Nose, Slávka Janouška, Jana Buriana a Jiřího Dědečka - se skládá z několika částí, které se navzájem doplňují. Úvodní text historika Přemysla Houdy se zabývá kulturně-politickou situací v 70. letech u nás, legislativním rámcem, v němž písničkáři hledali způsob, jak veřejně vystupovat, a zejména činností Státní bezpečnosti, která se na jednotlivé osobnosti Šafránu začala zaměřovat od roku 1975 a postupně si vytyčila úkol toto sdružení úplně zlikvidovat, což se jí v roce 1977 podařilo. Druhou část knihy tvoří pestrá koláž chronologicky řazených fotografií, plakátů, článků a jiných dokumentů, osvětlujících dějiny české folkové hudby v letech 1966-77. Rozsáhlou část třetí tvoří Houdovy Rozhovory po třiceti letech, vedené se všemi jmenovanými osobnostmi s výjimkou zesnulého Petra Kalandry, ale též s manažerem Šafránu Jiřím Pallasem a textaři Zorkou Růžovou a Jiřím Zychem. Závěr knihy tvoří diskografie a bibliografie členů Šafránu a rozsáhlý jmenný rejstřík. Kniha není historií českého písničkářství 70. let psanou z pohledu muzikologického či literárně-historického, ale historickým a pramenným dílem, které k napsání této historie vybízí.
