Picasso/Asia - A Conversation
Published to accompany a major exhibition at M+, Hong Kong, this catalogue places more than sixty Picasso masterpieces alongside works by Asian and Asian-diasporic artists selected from the M+ collections.
Why is Pablo Picasso so famous the world over? How does Picasso, the quintessential modern artist of the 20th century but also undeniably a European, relate to the work of contemporary artists in other parts of the world, such as Asia? And what do Picasso and his legacy mean in an age and a place that are far from his own? These are some of the fundamental questions explored by this book, which accompanies a major exhibition at M+, Hong Kong, and the Musée National Picasso-Paris.
At its heart are two intertwined narratives. First, Picasso's life and artistic practice are interpreted through the four archetypes of the creative genius, the outsider looking in, the consummate magician and the endlessly inquisitive student of art history. Secondly, the fresh interpretation of Picasso's oeuvre is placed 'in conversation' with the works of Asian artists, thereby revealing what Picasso's art can tell us about artistic practice today, and vice versa. In 1940 Sergei Rachmaninoff, living in exile in America, broke his creative silence and composed a swan song to his Russian homeland. What happened in those final haunted years and how did he come to write his farewell masterpiece, the Symphonic Dances?
Rachmaninoff left Petrograd in the throes of the Russian Revolution in 1917. He was 44 years old, at the peak of his powers as composer-conductor-performer, moving in elite Tsarist circles and running the family estate, his refuge and solace. He had already written the music which, today, has made him one of the most popular composers of all time: the second and third Piano Concertos and two symphonies. Reeling from the trauma of a life in upheaval, he wrote almost no music and quickly had to reinvent himself as a f?ted virtuoso pianist, building up untold wealth and meeting the stars, from Walt Disney and Charlie Chaplin to his Russian contemporaries and polar opposites, Prokofiev and Stravinsky. Still, the melancholy of leaving his homeland never lifted.

KONCEPT č. 10 sa venuje téme fasády. Architekti čoraz častejšie spájajú estetické riešenia so zodpovednosťou voči prírode a inovatívnymi materiálmi, čím vytvárajú fasády, ktoré nie sú len vizuálnym prvkom, ale aj nástrojom na komunikáciu ideí. Paláce a kostoly zdobili bohaté ornamenty, ktoré komunikovali moc alebo duchovnosť. Dnes sa však fasáda mení na médium, ktorým architektúra otvára dialóg s verejnosťou. Na stránkach Konceptu sa opäť venujeme aktuálnym projektom v oblasti Slovenska a Európy a uvedieme ich do širšieho spoločenského kontextu a rámca. Charting Auguste Rodin's relationships with the dancers who shaped his signature style and his mythic persona.
Juliet Bellow traces Rodin's interactions with dance makers and performers during his late career (1890-1912) through a series of interrelated case studies. His exchanges with Loie Fuller, Vaslav Nijinsky, and members of the Cambodian Royal Ballet troupe were central to Rodin's development of a modern sculptural aesthetic and the construction of his artistic celebrity. But this was not a simple case of one-way influence. These performers actively courted an affiliation with Rodin, wielding sculpture's cultural authority to move dance from the realm of commercial entertainment to that of "high art."

The book provides more than a new interpretation of Rodin's art: it considers how and why the name "Rodin" came to stand for a powerful constellation of ideas about art, authorship, and creative genius within the vibrant spectacle culture of Belle Époque Paris.
Compassion and Inconvenience
Compassion and Inconvenience combines artist Vika Kirchenbauer’s 30-minute video work Compassion and Inconvenience (2024)—with its script reproduced alongside stills and audio descriptions—and her essay Instituting Inconvenience and Colonial Relations: The Genesis of European Contemporary Art Institutions in Mid-18th Century London (2025). Both these contributions engage with the historical context of the cultural scene in mid-18th-century London, when the first public presentation of contemporary art took place. In a setting inextricably entangled with early capitalism and British colonialism, an emergent artistic elite fundamentally influenced how, for whom, and under what conditions contemporary art entered the public sphere. As part of this genesis, moral philosophical concepts and artists’ feelings—most distinctly around compassion and inconvenience—played important parts in inserting imaginings of superiority and constellations of dominance into the core of European notions of art and taste. By deepening into the historical roots of contemporary art exhibitions, this reader examines the conditions under which what we now consider self-evident came into being.
Habiba Djahnine
This volume focuses on contemporary Algerian feminist documentary filmmaker Habiba Djahnine as a "memory-bearer" who gives voice to her compatriots to tell their own stories in her films. It introduces the reader to key issues in contemporary Algerian culture and history (colonial, the Algerian War, the Black Decade of the 1990s), memory and human rights.
