Dějiny peloponnéské války
Po dlouhé, bezmála padesátileté odmlce se českým čtenářům opět dostává do rukou jedno z nejvýznamnějších děl světové historiografie, které, ačkoli spatřilo světlo světa před téměř dvěma a půl tisíci lety, nepřestává podnes fascinovat a inspirovat zájemce o historii z řad odborné i laické veřejnosti.
Thukydidovy Dějiny peloponnéské války, jež popisují a analyzují jeden z nejničivějších a nejkrvavějších konfliktů starověku – válku mezi Athénami a Spartou, přesněji řečeno mezi athénským námořním spolkem a peloponnéským spolkem –, představují mezník ve vývoji dějepisectví. Je-li za „otce dějepisu“ označován Hérodotos, byl to právě Thukydides, kdo jako první uplatnil realistický, racionálně-analytický přístup k historické látce. Na rozdíl od Hérodota, jenž věřil, že do lidských dějů zasahují bohové, a který své vyprávění protkával mýty a zkazkami z minulosti, Thukydides líčil události na základě vlastní zkušenosti a hodnověrných svědectví. Pátral po tom, jak se věci vskutku odehrály, a snažil se objevovat kořeny a příčiny sporu, který popisoval.
Hlavní otázkou, na niž hledal odpověď, bylo, proč k této hrozné válce došlo, jaké důvody vedly soupeřící řecké obce k tomu, aby střet rozpoutaly, a proč jej navzdory útrapám, které válečné běsnění přinášelo, nedokázaly zastavit. Thukydides, považovaný za průkopníka politického realismu v teorii mezinárodních vztahů, odhalil a objasnil dynamiku, jež explozi násilí vyvolala a která se jako histo¬rická zákonitost v dějinách hlásí o slovo pokaždé, kdy se stávající dominantní velmoc cítí ohrožena vzestupem velmoci nastupující a tváří v tvář oba-vě ze ztráty hegemonického postavení se nechá vtáhnout do válečné konfrontace. Soupeřící stra¬ny jsou lapeny do pasti, z níž není úniku a která vyústí ve zkázonosný konflikt.
Velký řecký historik tak již před téměř dvěma a půl tisíci lety pojmenoval zákonitost, jež neztrácí na aktuálnosti ani dnes, kdy se v „Thuky¬didově pasti“ ocitají Spojené státy a Čína…

No one understood this more clearly than George Minden, the head of a covert intelligence operation known as the 'CIA books programme', which aimed to win the Cold War with literature.
