Víceúčelový letoun F/A-18 je jedním z nejpovedenějších bojových strojů na světě. Paradoxně jeho vznik provázel neúspěch, neboť prohrál v soutěži LWF (Light Weight Fighter) s budoucím F-16. Jenže ohromné zkušenosti zúročené v původním prototypu YF-17 Cobra se staly natolik zajímavými, že se pro něj rozhodlo americké námořnictvo a dalo typu naději na druhý život. Pod novým označením F/A-18 se z letounu s marketingovým jménem Hornet postupně stal nástupce hned několika palubních typů včetně legendárních F-14 Tomcat, a to zejména díky pokroku v oblasti technologií radiolokátorů a řízených střel. Oproti většině předchůdců byl F/A-18 od počátku pojat jako víceúčelový letoun, který byl shodně určen k likvidaci vzdušných, námořních i pozemních cílů, jak ostatně napovídá i jeho netypické označení F/A (Fighter/Attack) namísto obvyklejšího F. Pro zavedení do služby u US Navy se výrobce spojil s koncernem McDonnell Douglas, který byl hlavním dodavatelem palubních strojů. Toto spojení, které později ukončily až soudy, bylo úspěšné pro letoun samotný, který dosáhl na řadovou službu i export. Nevýhodné ale bylo pro původního výrobce, pro nějž byl tento typ posledním, který dosáhl velkosériové výroby. Po veleúspěšném modelu F-5 Freedom Fighter a Tiger II firma Northrop dosáhla pouze na početně velmi omezenou výrobu „neviditelného“ bombardéru B-2 a po prohře svého typu YF-23 s budoucím F-22 Raptor se z ekonomických důvodů musela spojit s podobně strádající firmou Grumman. Teprve nyní, po desítkách let, získala zakázku na stavbu nového bombardéru B-21 Raider. F/A-18 se stal úspěšným i na zahraničních trzích, ačkoliv se střetával s politicky mnohem podporovanějšími F-16. I přesto dvoumotorová koncepce a univerzálnost v oblasti nasazení oslovily státy jako Austrálie, Finsko, Španělsko či Švýcarsko, které v době výběru požadovaly schopnosti, jež dokázal splnit na světě jen Hornet. K úspěšnému exportu došlo i přesto, že v porovnání s F-16 byl Hornet výrazně dražší jak z důvodu své víceúčelovosti a tomu uzpůsobeného vybavení, tak i kvůli mnoha specifickým námořním prvkům a v neposlední řadě i kvůli menšímu počtu vyrobených strojů. Služba typu je ale i přesto velmi úspěšná a když se začal přibližovat horizont konce technického života stávající flotily, americké námořnictvo v době celosvětových finančních škrtů od výrobce zvolilo nikoliv nový typ, ale hlubokou modernizaci zachovávající hlavní konstrukční rysy F/A-18. Ta získala označení Super Hornet, její výroba probíhá od roku 1995 a plánována je nejméně do roku 2027. To znamená, že poslední F/A-18 Super Hornet opustí výrobní linku téměř padesát let po vzletu prvního prototypu YF-17. A to rozhodně není špatný výsledek na typ, který v původní soutěži, pro níž byl určen a navržen, prohrál. Mnozí kritici letounů páté generace jako F-22 či F-35 uvádějí, že u nich došlo k odklonu v těch oblastech, které byly u strojů jako jsou F/A-18, F-16 či F-15 příčinou úspěchu. Předně jde o manévrovatelnost letounu, která i přes zbraně kategorie BVR má na soudobém bojišti stále podstatný význam, a dále potom možnost působit blízko nepříteli, neboť víceúčelové F/A-18 představují i podstatný prvek přímé bojové podpory pozemních sil. Jejich přímé nahrazení námořními letouny kategorie F-35B není zcela samozřejmé, a v mnoha ohledech proto F/A-18 zůstane nepřekonaným typem. I proto velení US Navy spustilo projekt F/A-XX, který má vést k výběru nástupce Super Hornetu. Firma Boeing, která před léty ovládla společnost McDonnell Douglas, se o zakázku uchází a již název soutěže ukazuje, že se nadále počítá s víceúčelovým typem pokračujícím v tradici nastolené původními F/A-18 Hornet.

Kniha vychází z disertační práce, obhájené v roce 2020 na Masarykově univerzitě v Brně. Autor v ní analyzuje české dějepisectví v letech 1938–1945. Neomezuje se ale pouze na historiografii českou, neboť ji srovnávání i s dějepisectvím sudetoněmeckým a slovenským, s všestranným důrazem na jejich vzájemné vztahy. Pozornost přitom věnuje institucionálnímu provozu historie v období protektorátu, knižnímu trhu v této době či uplatňování se historických témat v rozhlasu a denním tisku. Vedle toho se na historiografii v letech 1938-1945 dívá i biografickým prizmatem osudů jednotlivých aktérů, jež se mnohdy diametrálně lišily. Cílem autorovy práce je rovněž odhalit, jaké obrazy dějinné paměti historici zprostředkovávali svým čtenářům a posluchačům. Spolu s tím se ale rovněž ptá, jak na to široká veřejnost v období protektorátu reagovala, jak historické obrazy recipovala a jak se sama často stávala aktivními tvůrci státní politiky paměti.

Třetí a nejdelší část významné kroniky ze 14. století známé jako Gestes des Chiprois (Činy Kypřanů) pojednává o dějinách východního Středomoří od 30. let 12. století až do počátku 14. století. Jejím autorem je anonymní kyperský rytíř tradičně zvaný Templář z Tyru, který se pohyboval v blízkosti templářského mistra Viléma z Beaujeu, jemuž sloužil coby překladatel z arabštiny. Kronika líčí významné události v období od počátku 30. let 12. století až do roku 1309 na Východě, respektive 1314 na Západě. Autor často čerpá ze svých osobních zkušeností a věnuje se zejména posledním dnům pevninských křižáckých států, včetně pádu Akkonu v roce 1291 (jeho spis je jediným pramenem, v němž se zachovala očitá svědectví této katastrofy), a podává informace také o období po roce 1291. Dále zmiňuje různé události na Západě, včetně válek Štaufů v Itálii, vzestupu a pádu Šimona z Montfortu v Anglii či nekonečných válek Janova a Benátek ve Středomoří. V neposlední řadě se autor zabývá i procesem s templáři ve Francii, který vyústil ve zrušení tohoto mocného řádu. Vydání knihy podpořilo Ministerstvo kultury České republiky.

Dramatickými príbehmi minulosti čitateľa sprevádza historik Ústavu pamäti národa Vladimír Palko ml. Po „víťaznom“ februári 1948 sa komunistická štátna moc potrebovala zbaviť nepohodlných príslušníkov ZNB spôsobom, ktorý zastraší ostatných členov bezpečnostných zložiek. Osem procesov, deväť popravených príslušníkov, desiatky osôb odsúdených na stovky rokov väzenia a tisíce životov poznamenaných krutými rozsudkami justičnej mašinérie za vlády Klementa Gottwalda – všetko pod prísnym dohľadom sovietskych poradcov – taký bol výsledok besnenia nástupu komunistickej moci v jej prvých rokoch. Rôzne skutky a osudy policajtov z rôznych súčastí zboru, vrátane Štátnej bezpečnosti, nakoniec našli spoločné miesto, kde komunisti potrestali ich domnelú či skutočnú zradu – popravisko. Ich príbehy sa stávajú archiváliami a svedectvami podporenými sondami do takmer osemdesiat rokov vzdialenej totalitnej histórie Československa. Sú tiež príkladmi, ako sa dalo komunistickému režimu statočne odporovať, ale aj mu verne slúžiť, a napriek tomu sa – paradoxne – v mene vyššieho záujmu stať odstrašujúcim príkladom.
