Is a religious naturalism possible? 'Scientific' naturalism accommodates only 'thin' religiousness. A more robust religious naturalism posits an ultimate reality that supports the ideals of eco-morality and the hope that human fulfilment may be achieved by following those ideals. Such an account may yet be 'expansively' naturalist in taking the natural world to be the only (concrete) reality, and in not going against, only beyond, well-confirmed science. Criminal gangs prospered, as did typhus, starvation and soaring prices on the black market. Much of the female population was forced into part-time prostitution simply to obtain food. Then Vesuvius erupted. Lowe’s gripping and powerful book places Naples right at the heart of Italian history. What happened in this city was not a mere sideshow to bigger events taking place further north, it was central to the story of the country as a whole. Neapolitans resisted Fascism just as the Florentines, the Bolognese, and the Milanese did. They suffered just as northerners did, and they longed as much for constitutional rebirth. The heroism and sacrifice that took place in Naples were harbingers of what would later happen throughout Italy – as were the compromise and corruption of ideals that came after the Allies took control. Naples 1944 is original and humane history at its very best, and a book which shows that Neapolitan story is the Italian story.

Niekto by si pomyslel, alebo aspoň tak sa to navonok javí, akoby boli tie „zadné dvere“ v histórii priam nekonečné. Nový, v poradí už ôsmy zväzok edície História zadnými dverami z produkcie Historického ústavu SAV, v. v. i., máme „na tanieri“. Hoci nebol naplánovaný a rovnako tiež nie nevyhnutný, je tu. Vypýtal sa na svet akosi sám.
S našou „osmičkou“ sme mali rovnaký cieľ ako s jej predchodkyňami: zabaviť Vás pri čítaní. A samozrejme, aj trochu „dovzdelať“. Dočítate sa, okrem iného, odkiaľ pramení slogan byť „opitý ako Dán“, máme tiež niečo o bosorkách, bosorákoch a ježibabách, alebo aj vážnejšiu tému: ako prežívali evanjelickí exulanti v Uhorsku v 17. storočí. Dozviete sa tiež, kto a čím bol Bonaccorso Pitti. Viete, ako vznikali bratislavské sucháre, alebo aký život mala Aletta Jacobsová? V knihe nájdete aj to, ako sa formovala moderná slovenská chirurgia v medzivojnovom období, taktiež niečo „šteklivé“ o totálnych babrákoch – fašistoch. Zaujímavé sú tiež požiare, záplavy a zemetrasenia na Slovensku v 30. rokoch 20. storočia. Asi málokto niečo vie o doslova thrillerovom úteku Bratislavčana Ivana Zverinu z komunistického Československa do slobodného sveta v roku 1949 a možno nepoznáte ani pozadie levočskej havárie Dakoty ČSA v januári 1956, pri ktorej zahynulo 22 ľudí. Dajme šancu mieru a pozrime sa do dejín Ameriky 60. rokov minulého storočia, alebo nahliadnime aj do športu – do života úspešnej slovenskej tenistky (a herečky) Márie Markovičovej. Ozaj, vedeli ste, že za holandským tzv. totálnym futbalom bol jeden český emigrant?
A namiesto záveru opäť niečo špeciálne o tom, ako sa v minulosti, dávnej i nedávnej, pri liečbe rakoviny vnímala a vyvíjala imunoterapia.

Pluralism in Counselling and Psychotherapy
This book explores the concept of pluralism in therapy, emphasising the value of multiple therapeutic approaches. It introduces ‘pluralistic therapy’, developed by Mick Cooper and John McLeod, as a response to divisions in the therapy field, particularly the dominance of CBT and medicalised models. Within its chapters, the philosophical roots of pluralism are discussed, which, when applied to therapy, encourage drawing from multiple approaches in contrast to a monistic attitude, which promotes using singular approaches ‘purely’: the therapeutic relationship is emphasised as more important to outcomes than specific approaches or techniques. Loss is a universal human experience, and it is not limited to when a loved one dies. We experience loss in various ways throughout our lives: the death of a pet; the break-up of a relationship; children leaving home; job loss; the death of a parent; physical diminishment and more. So often, loss and grief are seen as unwelcome companions on life’s journey, yet aspects of them can be transformative.
