Confusion in the West

The authors characterize this culture as the 'original tradition', viewing its erosion as one which has led to anxiety about the entire value of Western thought. The Violence of Law
'Lawfare' describes the systematic use and abuse of legal procedure for political ends. This provocative book examines this insufficiently understood form of warfare in post-genocide Rwanda, where it contributed to the making of dictatorship. Jens Meierhenrich provides a redescription of Rwanda's daring experiment in transitional justice known as inkiko gacaca. By dissecting the temporally and structurally embedded mechanisms and processes by which change agents in post-genocide Rwanda manoeuvred to create modified legal arrangements of things past, Meierhenrich reveals an unexpected jurisprudence of violence. Combining nomothetic and ideographic reasoning, he shows that the deformation of the gacaca courts – and thus the rise of lawfare in post-genocide Rwanda – was not preordained but the outcome of a violently structured contingency. Magyar egyháztörténelmünk írásai nem beszélnek a magyar inkvizíció működéséről. Jelen tanulmányomnak nincs rejtett szándéka. Egyetlen mondata sem vád, de minden egyes sora panasz az elnémított ősvallás és eretnekségek üldözöttei helyett és felbecslése a sok erkölcsi és kultúrkárnak, amely a magyar inkvizícióból származott. Egyet azonban eleve be kell vallanom: az elkötelezett magyar történetírók egyoldalú, nyomasztó örökségként reánk nehezedő nyugati történetszemléletével szakítva, szándékosan és következetesen, keleti, ázsiai igazolást keresek. Kötelességemnek tekintem ezt azért, mert az „Európa idegenjeként” kezelt magyarság a nyugati történetszemléletben, mint műveletlen, barbár és alacsonyrendű népség szerepel. Money in the Dutch Republic
The Dutch Republic was an important hub in the early modern world-economy, a place where hundreds of monies were used alongside each other. Sebastian Felten explores regional, European and global circuits of exchange by analysing everyday practices in Dutch cities and villages in the period 1600-1850. He reveals how for peasants and craftsmen, stewards and churchmen, merchants and metallurgists, money was an everyday social technology that helped them to carve out a livelihood. With vivid examples of accounting and assaying practices, Felten offers a key to understanding the internal logic of early modern money. This book uses new archival evidence and an approach informed by the history of technology to show how plural currencies gave early modern users considerable agency. It explores how the move to uniform national currency limited this agency in the nineteenth century and thus helps us make sense of the new plurality of payments systems today.

Factional Politics in the Liberal Democratic Party
What explains change and continuity in Japan's economic statecraft? This Element examines the interplay between factional dynamics in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Japan's foreign policy through two cases: Japan's unprecedented decision to impose severe sanctions on Russia following its 2022 Ukraine invasion, and its decades-long ASEAN strategy amid political uncertainty and great power competition. The authors find that factional balance or the outsized influence of a large faction facilitates abrupt political-economic shifts, sustained until a similar dynamic triggers correction. Unlike most systems, Japan's intra-party politics do not lead to full leadership turnover, enabling factions to influence policy while empowering non-leadership members to drive change. This dual role strengthens barriers to change, embedding political inertia. Using factional membership data from 1961 to 2024, they argue that factions are a more systematic unit of analysis than political entrepreneurs in understanding the relationship between Japan's domestic politics and foreign policy decisions.

Britain and Weapons of Mass Destruction Verification
This is an insider’s history of the UK’s development of on-site inspections for nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons arms control and disarmament treaties from the late 1980s through to the first two decades of the 21st century. It provides for the first time in print a detailed narrative and analytical account from the personal perspective of a senior Foreign and Commonwealth Office expert, who participated in scores of realistic and demanding verification exercises at British as well as overseas military and commercial facilities, including at the former Soviet nuclear weapons test site at Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan. Far East RAF Liberators
Between 11 October 1944 and 8 April 1945, wireless operator/air gunner Roy Andrews flew thirty-five missions with the RAF’s 215 Squadron, based in Bengal, India. His missions, some over fourteen hours long, included bombing, strafing, and Air-Sea Rescue operations against Japanese targets in Burma and Thailand, as well as three trips to the Thailand-Burma ‘Death’ Railway.Roy began as the squadron''s second wireless operator, manning a .50-calibre beam gun. By January 1945, he became the primary wireless operator and completed the majority of his missions in this role. In addition to his operational duties, Roy managed various squadron tasks, such as censoring mail and preparing jungle kits.This book, based on Roy’s personal experiences, offers insights into his upbringing in Hong Kong and Australia, his military training, and his time in India during the war. ÚPV SR je v súčasnosti jediným správnym orgánom, ktorý nie je pripojený do centrálneho systému evidencie správnych poplatkov. Správne poplatky sa ÚPV SR síce platia na účet vedený v Štátnej pokladnici, ale na centrálnej úrovni chýbajú podrobné informácie o tom, koľko a akých poplatkových úkonov bolo uhradených a vykonaných. V nadväznosti na centralizáciu úhrad správnych poplatkov prostredníctvom Štátnej pokladnice je neopodstatnené mať taxatívne vymedzené platenie správnych poplatkov decentralizovanou formou pre tento konkrétny správny orgán. Keďže v súčasnosti nie je možné správne poplatky za úkony a konania ÚPV SR platiť prostredníctvom služby „eKolok“, navrhovaná zmena zabezpečí, že nedôjde k „miešaniu“ evidencie úhrad správnych poplatkov...

-znížiť administratívnu záťaž zjednodušením procesu registrácie pre oprávnených spotrebiteľov, ktorí sú už registrovaní ako platitelia dane,
-v nadväznosti na elektronizáciu komunikácie medzi jednotlivými subjektmi a správcom dane zrušiť povinnosť preukazovať sa povoleniami a osvedčeniami o registrácii,
-prispôsobiť právnu úpravu zdieľania elektriny aktuálnym trendom v oblasti energetickej politiky,
-vypustiť osobitné ustanovenie pre stlačený zemný plyn § 39a, pretože súčasne platná smernica Rady 2003/96/ES o reštrukturalizácii právneho rámca spoločenstva pre zdaňovanie energetických výrobkov.

Armies of the Achaemenid Persian Empire, 550-330 BC
Gabriele Esposito presents a detailed overview of the history, organization, equipment and tactics of the military forces deployed by Achaemenid Persia during the period 550-330 BC. The Achaemenid Empire founded by Cyrus the Great was one of the major military powers of Antiquity, conquering vast territories that straddled three continents. Its large and varied population supplied a dazzling array of troop types, producing a versatile war machine that campaigned from India to Egypt. These were the armies that drank rivers dry as they invaded Greece and, at the Empire’s zenith, defeated the Spartans at Thermopylae and torched Athens. They continued to evolve but proved unable to cope with Alexander the Great’s Macedonians.The author outlines the major campaigns fought by the Persians from Cyrus the Great to the conquest by Alexander. Revolts Against Rome
Throughout the first century AD, the emperors of Rome faced various threats to their rule from ambitious or embittered nobles. However, events show the Roman legionaries to be tenaciously loyal to the Julio-Claudian dynasty. The murder of Nero, the last of his dynasty, unleashed chaos where allegiance was bought by ‘the madness of the leading men.’ The troops, increasingly recruited from men who had never seen Italy, were often happy to draw their swords in support of a provincial governor against an emperor who was himself a victorious usurper. If successful in raising their own candidate to ‘the purple’ they could expect the gratitude to be tangible and spendable. Mutinies were rare and often caused by changes to conditions of service or harsh discipline which demeaned the soldier’s status and honour.
